Asaduddin Owaisi exposes Pakistan in Algeria: ‘Terrorist Lakhvi became father while being in jail'

Hindustan Times01-06-2025
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Pakistan over its dubious record on fostering terrorism, saying Islamabad's tactics to shelter terrorists fuel instability in South Asia. Addressing the Indian community in Algeria as part of an all-party parliamentary delegation, Owaisi also gave an example of Islamabad's complicity in terrorism, saying that a terrorist had become a father while officially being incarcerated in Pakistan.
In a hard-hitting remark, the Hyderabad MP pointed to Pakistan's special treatment of terrorist Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in jail.
'There was this one terrorist called Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi – no country in the world would allow a terrorist who's facing a terror charge (come out of jail). But he became a father to a son while sitting in prison. However, the trial progressed immediately when Pakistan was put on the Grey List (of FATF),' Owaisi said, highlighting how international pressure had briefly forced Pakistan to act.
Asaduddin Owaisi expressed hope that if Pakistan is placed back on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List – a global watchdog that monitors countries for terror financing – terror incidents in India would decline.
Owaisi warned that the issue was no longer just a regional concern, saying, 'It's not only a question of South Asia. We are the 4th largest economy. What will happen? Do you want all this carnage to spread to different parts of South Asia,' he asked.
'It is in the interest of world peace to control Pakistan, which is the main sponsor of terrorism. It has to be brought back in the FATF Grey List,' Owaisi added.
Speaking about the roots of terrorism, he further said, 'Terrorism survives on two things: ideology and money. Ideology, you know very well, you have seen the Black Decade, even in South Algeria, you still have some problems. On that point, we are together.'
'Once you bring Pakistan back in the Grey List, we will see a decrease in terrorism in India. We'll see killings coming down. We have the 2018 experience when Algeria and other countries helped India,' he said.
Owaisi also linked Pakistan's ideology to that of international terrorist groups, saying, 'Pakistan is the epicentre of Takfirism and there is no difference in ideology between the terrorist groups in Pakistan and Daesh and Al-Qaeda."
The AIMIM leader went on to say, "They believe that they have a religious sanction, which is completely wrong. Islam does not allow the killing of any person, and unfortunately, that is their ideology,' he added.
Owaisi pointed out the growing ties between India and Algeria, he said, 'We (India and Algeria) signed a defence MoU in November (2024), and I'm sure that this will increase understanding and strengthen our relationship. Hopefully, our Prime Minister will come to Algeria very soon. Hopefully, the President of Algeria will come to India. This will be a very good step in the right direction.'
The comments came as India continues its diplomatic outreach, sending delegations abroad to build international pressure against terrorism and tell its side of the story in the wake of the brutal Pahalgam terror attack and India's military response under Operation Sindoor.
The delegation observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack, which killed 26 people on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir.
On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, a targeted strike on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Over 100 terrorists from groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen were killed.
Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling and drone attacks, which led to further Indian strikes damaging 11 Pakistani air bases. On May 10, both countries agreed to a temporary ceasefire.

PM unveils 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra'; pushes for Made-in-India jet engines

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Operation Sindoor as a demonstration of India's self-reliance in defence, and vowed to enhance the country's military capabilities by announcing the launch of 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra,' aimed at neutralising enemy infiltrations and enhancing the country's offensive capabilities. He also urged Indian innovators and youth to develop jet engines — a critical gap in the country's defence manufacturing capabilities that has held up indigenous combat aircraft programmes. In his 12th Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Operation Sindoor — India's military response to the Pakistan-backed April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack — demonstrated that strategic autonomy and indigenous capabilities, including Made-in-India weapons, are essential for decisively tackling threats, making self-reliance the foundation of national strength, dignity, and the journey towards a developed India by 2047. He also emphasised that national security cannot rely on foreign dependence. 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra' announced Noting that August 16 marked Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, PM Modi said that the Hindu deity and his divine weapon — the Sudarshan Chakra — brought to mind how modes of warfare are changing across the world. He emphasised that India is well-equipped to counter every new form of warfare, and that the country's technological prowess was demonstrated during Operation Sindoor, when the armed forces repelled countless attacks by Pakistan, which launched missiles and drones against India's military installations, airbases, sensitive locations, centres of faith, and civilians. 'Due to the efforts made over the past 10 years to secure the nation, the result of that strength was that every one of their attacks was shattered. They could not inflict even the slightest damage,' said PM Modi. Highlighting that India must further expand and continuously upgrade the mastery it has achieved to ensure the defence of the nation and the safety of its citizens, the Prime Minister said that, drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna's divine weapon, he was announcing the launch of the 'Sudarshan Chakra Mission.' He explained that the mission would deliver a powerful weapon system capable not only of neutralising enemy attacks, but also of striking back with multi-fold force.

Linguistics politics: PM's I-Day push for language unity amid row over three-language policy

In recent years, language has not just been a cultural issue but a political flashpoint, often drawing sharp criticism and counter criticism between the Union Government led by the BJP and state governments led by regional parties, including DMK in Tamil Nadu. His statement comes at a time when two southern states, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are heading to polls in May 2026 and when states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala are opposing the imposition of Hindi. Chennai: At a time when states including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and West Bengal are up against the three-language policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech emphasised 'taking pride in different languages spoken in the country'. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort after hoisting the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the diversity in the country should be celebrated. Advocating equal importance to every language, he said, 'We should take pride in the different languages spoken in our country. Our country is filled with the vibrancy of languages.' He also said he was proud to have conferred Classical Language status to five more Indian languages—Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit—in October 2024. These languages join other languages like Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odiya in the Classical Language category. 'The more our languages develop, the more our knowledge system will be enriched. Our language has so much strength, we should be proud of all our languages,' the PM said. This is not the first time Prime Minister Narendra Modi has touched upon the language issue. In 2024, during his Independence Day speech, he emphasised the importance of studying in one's mother tongue. 'I firmly believe the new education policy emphasises the importance of the mother tongue. I urge state governments and all institutions in the country that the country's talent should not be hindered because of language. Language should not be a barrier. The strength of the mother tongue empowers even the poorest child in our country to fulfill their dreams,' he said in his 2024 address. While the Prime Minister's remarks might have been framed as a call for cultural pride, the political context makes them significant. In Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK has strongly opposed any form of Hindi imposition, maintaining a two-language formula of Tamil and English. The Tamil Nadu government has even rejected the National Education Policy and released a separate State Education Policy. Kerala has also voiced similar concerns, aligning with Tamil Nadu in opposing the attempt to promote Hindi over other Indian languages. In Maharashtra, regional parties have criticised the perceived marginalisation of Marathi in favour of Hindi and English in central government initiatives. With Tamil Nadu and Kerala heading to Assembly elections in May 2026, language politics is expected to remain a potent campaign issue. The Prime Minister's reference to the classical status granted to regional languages, such as Marathi and Bengali, may be seen a strategy to address criticism from the Opposition. With less than nine months to the assembly elections, even neutral cultural statements can acquire political weight in the charged atmosphere of South India's language debate. The Prime Minister's call to celebrate India's linguistic diversity could be seen as a political message ahead of the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
