Asaduddin Owaisi exposes Pakistan in Algeria: ‘Terrorist Lakhvi became father while being in jail'
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Pakistan over its dubious record on fostering terrorism, saying Islamabad's tactics to shelter terrorists fuel instability in South Asia. Addressing the Indian community in Algeria as part of an all-party parliamentary delegation, Owaisi also gave an example of Islamabad's complicity in terrorism, saying that a terrorist had become a father while officially being incarcerated in Pakistan.
In a hard-hitting remark, the Hyderabad MP pointed to Pakistan's special treatment of terrorist Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in jail.
'There was this one terrorist called Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi – no country in the world would allow a terrorist who's facing a terror charge (come out of jail). But he became a father to a son while sitting in prison. However, the trial progressed immediately when Pakistan was put on the Grey List (of FATF),' Owaisi said, highlighting how international pressure had briefly forced Pakistan to act.
Asaduddin Owaisi expressed hope that if Pakistan is placed back on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List – a global watchdog that monitors countries for terror financing – terror incidents in India would decline.
Owaisi warned that the issue was no longer just a regional concern, saying, 'It's not only a question of South Asia. We are the 4th largest economy. What will happen? Do you want all this carnage to spread to different parts of South Asia,' he asked.
'It is in the interest of world peace to control Pakistan, which is the main sponsor of terrorism. It has to be brought back in the FATF Grey List,' Owaisi added.
Speaking about the roots of terrorism, he further said, 'Terrorism survives on two things: ideology and money. Ideology, you know very well, you have seen the Black Decade, even in South Algeria, you still have some problems. On that point, we are together.'
'Once you bring Pakistan back in the Grey List, we will see a decrease in terrorism in India. We'll see killings coming down. We have the 2018 experience when Algeria and other countries helped India,' he said.
Owaisi also linked Pakistan's ideology to that of international terrorist groups, saying, 'Pakistan is the epicentre of Takfirism and there is no difference in ideology between the terrorist groups in Pakistan and Daesh and Al-Qaeda."
The AIMIM leader went on to say, "They believe that they have a religious sanction, which is completely wrong. Islam does not allow the killing of any person, and unfortunately, that is their ideology,' he added.
Owaisi pointed out the growing ties between India and Algeria, he said, 'We (India and Algeria) signed a defence MoU in November (2024), and I'm sure that this will increase understanding and strengthen our relationship. Hopefully, our Prime Minister will come to Algeria very soon. Hopefully, the President of Algeria will come to India. This will be a very good step in the right direction.'
The comments came as India continues its diplomatic outreach, sending delegations abroad to build international pressure against terrorism and tell its side of the story in the wake of the brutal Pahalgam terror attack and India's military response under Operation Sindoor.
The delegation observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack, which killed 26 people on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir.
On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, a targeted strike on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Over 100 terrorists from groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen were killed.
Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling and drone attacks, which led to further Indian strikes damaging 11 Pakistani air bases. On May 10, both countries agreed to a temporary ceasefire.

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña begins 3-day India visit, meets PM Modi
New Delhi: India and members of the Global South can learn from each other's experiences in tackling challenges such as terrorism and organised crime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday as he held talks with visiting Paraguayan President Santiago Peña on bolstering cooperation in areas ranging from trade to digital technology and defence. The Pahalgam terror attack of April 22, which prompted India to target terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan, figured in talks between the two leaders. Modi said India and Paraguay 'stand united' in the fight against terror and Peña expressed solidarity with the victims of the terror attack. Both leaders unequivocally condemned all forms of terrorism and violent extremism, officials said. Peña began a three-day visit to India on Monday, the first by a Paraguayan president since 2012. Besides holding talks with the Indian leadership, he is also set to meet top business leaders in New Delhi and Mumbai to urge them to invest in diverse sectors in Paraguay. 'India and Paraguay stand united in the fight against terrorism. There is immense possibility of cooperation to fight against shared challenges such as cybercrime, organised crime and drug trafficking,' Modi said in his opening remarks at the meeting with Peña, speaking in Hindi. Modi noted that India and Paraguay are integral parts of the Global South with similar aspirations and challenges and said: 'This is why we can learn from each other's experiences to deal with these challenges effectively.' Modi also expressed his deep appreciation for Paraguay's strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack and expressing solidarity with the people and government of India. 'Both leaders unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations,' P Kumaran, secretary (East) in the external affairs ministry, told a media briefing. 'We see new opportunities for cooperation in areas such as digital technology, critical minerals, energy, agriculture, healthcare, defence, railways, space and overall economic partnership,' Modi said. 'We have a preferential trade agreement with Mercosur. We can work together to further expand it.' In addition to setting up a joint commission as a key platform to review and advance cooperation in priority areas, the two sides are working on two separate memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to enhance collaboration in agriculture and space technology. The two countries are working on a MoU for Paraguay to collaborate with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop and launch small and nano satellites, Kumaran said. While Paraguay's priorities in the defence sector are different from those of India, Kumaran said there is scope for bilateral cooperation in the context of Paraguay's efforts to secure large network of inland waterways, including bolstering law enforcement to tackle trans-national crimes such as human and drug trafficking. Peña also expressed keen interest in attracting Indian investments and enhancing bilateral cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, defence, infrastructure, mining and renewable energy. Peña urged Indian firms to take advantage of Paraguay's position as one of the most open economies in the Mercosur region and promised to facilitate investments, officials said. 'Given their central location in South America, it would be possible for us to use Paraguay as a launching pad to try and access other markets in the region. Our companies would be looking at Paraguay as...a staging post and therefore, look at it in a way that is a force multiplier,' Kumaran said. 'We will be looking at expanding our presence in South America, using Paraguay as a staging post.' India and Paraguay also wish to expand trade links under the India-Mercosur preferential trade agreement. The members of Mercosur, a trade bloc that currently includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, are holding technical talks with India on enhancing market access and boosting bilateral and inter-regional trade. There is serious interest in expanding the scope and reach of the India-Mercosur preferential trade agreement in terms of the range of products, though consensus has to be built up among the five members on the bloc on the terms of reference for further discussions, Kumaran said. Two-way between India and Paraguay was worth $477 million during 2022-23, with Indian exports accounting for $317 million. India's main exports were motor vehicles, agro-chemicals, auto parts and pharmaceutical products, while the key imports from Paraguay were soya oil, iron and steel, aluminium and animal products.

Egyptian Senate affirms solidarity with India in fight against terrorism
The high-level multi-party delegation from India, led by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP) Supriya Sule, on Monday held a fruitful engagement with the distinguished members of the Egyptian Senate, conveying India's firm and principled position against terrorism. The delegates met Senator Hossam Al-Khouly of Mostaqbal Watan Party, Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee Hazem Omar and Chairmen and members of other Parliamentary Committees. The Senate reaffirmed solidarity with India and reiterated importance attached to the close strategic partnership between India and Egypt. The delegation carrying forth India's strong message on zero-tolerance against terrorism as part of India's diplomatic outreach on Operation Sindoor was received by Indian Ambassador to Egypt Suresh Reddy on their arrival in the Middle Eastern country. The delegates have a packed and productive schedule in Egypt, including ministerial engagements, parliamentary exchanges, interactions with think tanks, media, Indian community, and others. The all-party delegation led by Sule also includes BJP leaders Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Anurag Thakur, and V. Muraleedharan, Congress leaders Manish Tewari and Anand Sharma, Telugu Desam Party's Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, Aam Aadmi Party leader Vikramjeet Singh Sawhney, and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. "The delegation will engage in dialogue with the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs (ECFA). They are also scheduled to meet with Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt. The delegation will also hold talks with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States," read a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Cairo. "The programme includes a floral tribute at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at El-Horreya Park, visit to the Heliopolis War Memorial, and interactions with members of the Indian community in Egypt, policy makers, including senior editors, scholars, and strategic thinkers. The visit reflects India's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Egypt and the Arab world in combating terrorism and advancing shared global values," the statement added. Earlier on Sunday evening, the delegation concluded a successful visit to Ethiopia, where they held rich, intense and fruitful interactions with Ethiopian dignitaries, members of media, academia, civil society, think-tanks as well as the Indian community in Ethiopia. They conveyed in one voice India's zero-tolerance policy towards cross-border terrorism and briefed about developments since the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. The delegation shared that Operation Sindoor, conducted by India in response, was calibrated, targetted and proportionate, demonstrating India's commitment to countering terrorism without escalating tensions. "The delegation emphasised the need to recognise the fact that identifying and firmly dealing with all kinds of terrorists, its perpetrators, supporters, promoters including those who give moral support is the need of hour; working on these lines, India has started dismantling the cross-border terrorism infrastructure, developed and used against India for several decades," said Indian Embassy in Addis Ababa. "The Ethiopian side emphasised its own zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and stressed that terrorism must be condemned. The delegation appreciated the solidarity shown by the Ethiopian leadership in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack and thanked them for the support," it added. Addressing the Indian community in Ethiopia, the delegation members commended them for upholding the values of tolerance, pluralism, and unity, and for resisting divisive efforts aimed at destabilising India's social fabric. A large number of Ethiopian nationals who studied in India and now hold important positions in public life expressed their solidarity with India and supported the counter-terrorism measures. The visit of the Indian delegation to Egypt marks a continuation of India's strategic outreach to garner international support against cross-border terrorism emanating from the soil of Pakistan.
