Here's how to track your tax refund and stimulus check: Status update for 2025

Economic Times14-07-2025
AP Status update for 2025 on tax refund and stimulus check
As summer heats up, millions of Americans are asking a familiar question: 'Where's my refund?' With tax season well behind us, the wait for both federal and state tax refunds, and the end of stimulus check eligibility, has become a hot topic from coast to coast.
Stimulus checks: The window has closed
If you're still hoping for a federal stimulus check, you're out of luck for 2025. The deadline to file for the third and final $1,400 stimulus payment (Recovery Rebate Credit) was April 15, 2025. The IRS is no longer accepting claims for this round, and no new federal stimulus payments have been announced.
Speculation about a fourth stimulus check- including claims of a $2,000 payment- has been circulating widely on social media and unverified websites. However, there is no official confirmation from Congress or the IRS regarding any new stimulus checks for 2025.
How to track your federal tax refund
The IRS's 'Where's My Refund?' tool remains the fastest and most reliable way to check your federal refund status. Taxpayers need their Social Security number (or ITIN), filing status, and the exact refund amount to get updates, which are refreshed once every 24 hours. E-filers can check their status within 24 hours, while paper filers should wait at least four weeks before checking. The IRS2Go mobile app offers the same features for those on the move. The IRS typically issues refunds within 21 days of e-filing, but delays can happen due to errors, incomplete information, or additional review. If your refund is delayed, the IRS recommends using their online tools before calling, as phone wait times can be lengthy.
How to track your state tax refund
Every state with an income tax has its own online portal or automated phone system for refund tracking. For example, California's Franchise Tax Board, Illinois's 'Where's My Refund?' page, and Indiana's Refund Status Service all allow residents to check the progress of their returns using basic personal information. Processing times vary: e-filed state returns usually take three to four weeks, while paper returns can take up to three months in some states.
Many states also offer email or text notifications for updates, and some provide real-time status changes as returns are processed. If you encounter delays, check your state's FAQ or contact their tax department for guidance.
Why the wait?Refund delays can be caused by simple errors, mismatched information, claims for certain tax credits, or additional verification steps. Both federal and state agencies may request more documentation, which can add weeks to the process. E-filing and opting for direct deposit remain the fastest ways to get your money.Whether you're in Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, or anywhere else in the US, tracking your tax refund is easier than ever—if you know where to look. Use the IRS and state online tools, double-check your information, and be patient as agencies work through millions of returns. And if you missed the stimulus deadline, keep an eye on official announcements for any future relief programs. For now, the best advice is to check your status online, avoid common mistakes, and let the refund process run its course.

BJP to relaunch 'Gothan' as 'Gaudham' in Chhattisgarh

The BJP government in Chhattisgarh is set to relaunch the erstwhile Congress government's flagship 'Gothan' scheme under a new name - 'Gaudham'. The state finance department has approved a draft of the scheme and sent it to district collectors across the state, said officials. The erstwhile Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government had launched the scheme under which it started buying cow dung from farmers through more than 10,000 Gothan centres. However, after BJP came to power, the purchase of cow dung was stopped. With increasing accidents involving stray cattle on the roads and highways, state government has now prepared a revamped plan under the scheme. Just last week, more than 90 cows died in three separate incidents. The government will not buy cow dung and instead provide monetary support to cattle grazers. It will provide a monthly honorarium to cattle grazers and a daily fodder budget for the cattle at the centres. The cattle grazers will receive ₹10,916 each per month while for every animal the initial budget has been kept as ₹10 per day. In the first phase, Gaudham centres will be set up in rural areas alongside the National Highway (NH)-6 . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Teaspoon Before Bed Burns Body Fat - Fit Into Your Clothes Again! gofitlifeguide Click Here Undo

Michigan Governor Whitmer urges Donald Trump to ease tariffs; auto jobs under threat; automaker fears rising cost

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer met privately with President Donald Trump this week to deliver a message she knew he might resist: his tariffs are hurting the state's automotive industry, threatening jobs and profits in a sector central to Michigan's economy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Democrat brought a slide presentation to the Oval Office meeting on Tuesday, highlighting how Trump's import taxes could cause severe economic damage in a state that helped elect him in 2024. It was Whitmer's third White House meeting since Trump returned to office in January, but unlike her more public visit in April, this one was behind closed doors. According to people familiar with the talks, Whitmer also raised the need for federal support after an ice storm and asked to delay Medicaid changes, reported AP. Trump made no specific commitments. Under Trump's trade measures, US automakers face a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, 30% on parts from China, and up to 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico not covered by a 2020 trade deal. Meanwhile, German, Japanese and South Korean vehicles pay only a 15% import tax under new agreements. Trump has also threatened a 100% tariff on imported computer chips, key to modern vehicle production, exempting only domestic producers. Whitmer's presentation, obtained by The Associated Press, showed that trade with Canada and Mexico has driven $23.2 billion in investment to Michigan since 2020. General Motors, Ford and Stellantis run 50 factories in the state, supported by over 4,000 parts suppliers, together employing nearly 600,000 workers. Automakers have repeatedly warned the administration that the tariffs will cut profits and hurt global competitiveness. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ford said tariffs cost it $800 million in the second quarter alone, while GM reported $1.1 billion in related expenses. Both say these costs could limit investment in new US factories. Since Trump took office in January, Michigan has lost 7,500 manufacturing jobs, federal data show. Smaller suppliers, such as Detroit Axle, have also felt the strain. Owner Mike Musheinesh said the market has shifted from growth to mere survival, though his company recently avoided closing a warehouse and laying off over 100 workers. Matt Grossman, a political science professor at Michigan State University, said the meeting underscored Whitmer's unique position among Democratic governors, balancing state interests with political opposition to Trump's agenda. 'Everyone's aware Michigan is a critical swing state and the auto industry has outsized influence,' he said.
