Perhaps not always the most obvious person to author a book on building confidence, Nafousi says she didn't always embody that unwavering belief. 'I was suffering with low self-esteem from 7 years old,' she reveals. 'I distinctly remember picking myself apart, feeling less than and like an outsider based on the way I looked and my Iraqi heritage.' But it's this early struggle and her subsequently formed self-acceptance and authenticity that laid the foundation of what would eventually become her life's work.
Studies estimate that over 4.9 billion people worldwide scroll through various social media feeds on a daily basis, with digital platforms now becoming the breeding rounds for what experts call 'scroll-induced insecurity.' It's reported that the average person spends 2.5 hours daily on these platforms, with 16-24 year olds exceeding 3 hours — time largely spent absorbing carefully curated images that can potentially trigger harmful comparison.
For adolescents, the stakes are even higher. Research published in JAMA Psychiatry found those spending more than 3 hours daily on social media faced double the risk of anxiety and depression. As a result, the UK's Royal College of Psychiatrists labeled social media-induced low self-esteem as 'one of the most significant and under-addressed public health concerns of our time.'
Aspirational exhaustion — a term referring to the state where one's sense of self becomes increasingly fragile against impossible standards, is the inevitable outcome of consuming constant stream of filtered lives. For a generation whose confidence has been eroded by the validation-seeking cycle of likes, shares, and followers, this environment makes Nafousi's message about internal validation particularly relevant.
Instead of overwhelming her audience with generic 'confidence tips' that seem to have flooded the wellness space, Nafousi's approach differentiates by placing an emphasis on authenticity. 'People connect through authenticity and vulnerability,' she explains. Her framework moves beyond superficial advice, addressing the root causes of insecurity while offering practical tools for lasting change.

'Becoming aware of these distortions helps you pause, zoom out, and ask: Is this thought really true or is it based on my past experiences, limiting beliefs and current state of mind?'
For Nafousi, who has been candid from day one about her personal struggles that inspired her bestselling Manifest series, confidence isn't about perfection but rather 'being at peace with who you are — not because you're perfect, but because you've stopped trying to be.'
Through her own experience, Nafousi discovered that confidence isn't built overnight but through consistent, intentional practices. In a recent article she has written for British Vogue, the author shares five simple changes that transformed her relationship with herself: visualization, improving posture, accepting compliments without deflection, dressing as her best self, and carefully choosing who she spends time with.

Robert Pether, a mechanical engineer, was jailed in 2021 on fraud charges amid a contract dispute between the consulting firm he worked for and the Central Bank of Iraq. The UN has said the 50-year-old's detention and treatment was illegal, and an international court has ruled his employer is not responsible for the business disagreement. Iraqi officials are yet to provide an explanation for the decision, Mr Pether's wife Desree told the BBC - noting her "extremely sick" husband is still banned from leaving the country despite needing urgent medical care. The family feels numb with shock, said Mrs Pether, who has been tirelessly lobbying for this moment. "It's the first time in over four years that we've taken one step in the right direction." "There's a tiny glimmer of hope, but there's another mountain still to go over." "He really needs to be home and in hospital." Simon Harris, the tánaiste (deputy prime minister) of Ireland - where the Pether family lives - said in a statement to media that Iraq's Foreign Minister had called him to confirm the "welcome news". "[This] has been a long and distressing saga for Robert's wife, three children and his wider family and friends," Harris said. "I welcomed this as a first step to his being allowed to return to his family in Roscommon." He added that he remained concerned about Mr Pether's health and any outstanding charges against him - which are unclear. The BBC has contacted the Australian government for comment. Mr Pether worked in the Middle East for almost a decade before taking on a huge rebuild of the Central Bank of Iraq's Baghdad headquarters in 2015. He was arrested alongside his CME Consulting colleague, Egyptian Khalid Radwan, after the bank accused the men of stealing money from the project. After being held without charge for almost six months, and then subjected to a speedy trial, the two were each given a five-year jail sentence and a joint fine of $12m (A$18.4m, £8.8m). However, a 2022 report from the UN determined that the case contravened international law, and that Mr Pether and Mr Khalid had been subjected to "abusive and coercive" interrogations. Iraq's government has previously denied allegations of ill treatment. In 2023, the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) Court of Arbitration ruled that Iraq's central bank was at fault in the dispute with CME, and ordered it to pay $13m to the company. Mrs Pether said she spoke to her husband after his release on Thursday night. "He's on a bit of a high tonight, but I think he'll probably come crashing down tomorrow." He looked sick and weak, she said, noting that he can't keep food down and hasn't eaten properly in months. There are also worries he has a potential skin cancer relapse, she added. "He's unrecognisable. If he got on a plane now and they were checking his passport, they would not know it was the same person." She said efforts are now turning to have Mr Pether's travel ban lifted, but in the meantime the family has turned to crowdfunding to try to get him private hospital care in Baghdad. Iraqi authorities on Monday launched a probe into a mass die-off of fish in the southern marshlands, the latest in a string of such events in recent years. One possible cause for the localised die-off could be a shortage of oxygen sparked by low water flow, increased evaporation and rising temperatures fuelled by climate change. Another possible reason could be chemicals used by fishermen to make it easier to catch their prey, local officials and activists told AFP. AFP images showed large quantities of silver fish floating in the marshlands of Ibn Najm near the southern city of Najaf. Buffaloes could be seen surrounded by dead fish, trying to cool themselves off in the water. "We have received several citizens' complaints," said chief environmental officer in Najaf, Jamal Abd Zeid, adding that a technical inspection team had been set up. An AFP photographer at the site saw a team of civil servants collecting water from the marshland. Among the issues the team was tasked with probing, Abd Zeid said, were a shortage of water, electrical fishing and the use by fishermen of "poisons". For at least five years, Iraq has been hit by successive droughts fuelled by climate change. Authorities also blame the construction of dams by neighbouring Iran and Turkey for the drastic drop in flow in Iraq's rivers. The destruction of Iraq's natural environment is only the latest layer of suffering imposed on a country that has endured decades of war and political oppression. "We need lab tests to determine the exact cause" of the fish die-off, said environmental activist Jassim al-Assadi. A lack of oxygen caused by low water flow, heat, evaporation and wind were all possible reasons, he said. He said agricultural pesticides could also have led to the mass die-off. Probes into other similar events showed the use of poison in fishing led to mass deaths. "It is dangerous for public health, as well as for the food chain," Assadi said.
