People need not fear cops in Dakshina Kannada: Home Minister G Parameshwara
BENGALURU: After the BJP accused police of harassing members of pro-Hindu organisations, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara said common people need not worry and he would ensure that people are not harassed.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Parameshwara said one need not have to get scared in the Dakshina Kannada district. 'Those who work against law, those who indulge in anti-public activities, they might have to fear. But common people need not have to fear or worry,' he said.
He said in Coastal Karnataka, the police might have got the information about those indulging in communal violence. 'As a duty, the policemen are doing night rounds and has increased the numbers. They are also visiting to instill courage and trust in people. At the same time, if there are anti-social elements, to monitor them, night rounds are being done. Public need not have to panic, I can assure that they will not be harmed,'' he said. Union Minister for State Shobha Karandlaje and other BJP leaders alleged that police are harassing Hindu activists. When asked, Parameshwara said they are not targeting anyone. 'Those violating laws, they have to fear,'' he said.
Parameshwara said they have established Anti Communal Force, and in next 10 days, they are expected to launch it. 'Even then, there will be some opposition. But it is the responsibility of the State Government to maintain law and order, and peace. This is why we need to take action. 'Neither myself nor Chief Minister Siddaramaiah gives instruction to police every one hour. The police department officials take action on spot what has to be done at that time as per the rules,'' he added.
On preventing some people from entering Dakshina Kannada, he said,'If there are people who indulge directly or supporting murder, looting, what should be done for them? They should be kept away from the place. Also, there is law and based on that, next course of action will be taken,' he said.

Sugar co-ops face govt action for loan default
MUMBAI: The state government has decided to take to task respective board of directors of 31 sugar cooperatives that were extended margin money loans (down payment) and have defaulted in paying back the first two instalments. The loans were disbursed to the cooperatives, linked to prominent politicians, in tranches ahead of the Lok Sabha election in August 2024, and thereafter in March 2025. The cumulative amount totals ₹4,355 crore. Some of the sugar factories that have taken loans are controlled by top Maharashtra leaders -- Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil (BJP), Harshavardhan Patil (NCP-SP), Shivendraraje Bhosale (BJP), Sanjay Mandalik (Shiv Sena), Hassan Mushrif (NCP), among others. The loan taken by each sugar factory is approximately between ₹40 crore and ₹300 crore. The government did not disclose who among them, or 26 others, were defaulters. People in the know of things from the government have said if the money is not recovered in a month the government will dissolve the boards and recover dues by attaching personal immovable properties of respective directors – this was the norm in August 2023, which was diluted in subsequent years, and has been reinstated now. The cash-strapped government has been compelled to take this step as it has ended up paying back instalments to the bank – ₹79 crore in the interest on loan in January -- on behalf of the factories, said a senior officer in the cooperation department. The government stood bank guarantee for the margin money loan from National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), controlled by the central government. The loan, at 9.46%, is lower than the market rate, and is given for eight years, with the actual repayment of the principal amount beginning in the third year of the disbursement. Factories are expected to pay interest on the loan for the first two years. Most have failed to pay the interest component, compelling the government to bear the burden. Explaining the government's move, the officer said, 'If things are not set right, the burden of repayment of loans in the first two years will be over ₹350 crore, which will increase with time once the repayment of the principal amount begins.' He added, strict norms were laid out following poor recovery from the factories. 'Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, who is also the finance minister, finally decided it was time for hard talk,' he said. Babasaheb Patil, cooperation minister and NCP leader, said, 'We have made it mandatory for sugar factories to first pay the FRP (fair and remunerative price) and the loans from selling the sugar produced from the season which ended last month.' Patil added that the loan was not being used for the purpose it was taken – on upgradation of factories, setting up distilleries, etc. Most of it, he said, was utilised in paying salaries. 'Stricter norms will help the government to restrict non-deserving factories from availing bank guarantee from the government.' PR Patil, chairman, Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation, found the state's conditions unrealistic. 'The state cannot dissolve the board of directors and mortgage immovable properties. It will it not stand in court,' he said.

Hyderabad: BJP MP and former minister in BRS government Eatala Rajendar spilled the beans before Justice PC Ghose Commission inquiring into the Kaleshwaram project on Friday. The BJP MP told the commission that the three barrages – Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla were constructed only after the approval of CWC and Technical Committee and as per the recommendations of Cabinet Sub Committee headed by the then Irrigation minister T Harish Rao. Former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was the brain behind the Kaleshwaram, the former minister said, adding that the Maharashtra government had opposed the Tummidihatti barrage, and hence the then government took up Medigadda. Before the start of open court, the Commission took oath from Rajender that he will tell only the truth. During the 40-minute quizzing, the commission posed a volley of questions to the MP. Rajender replied that the cabinet has taken a decision on Kaleshwaram only on the basis of sub-committee and technical team reports. The construction of the three barrages was started after the cabinet gave its nod. He informed that after Maharashtra objected, the then CM KCR formed a sub-committee. Harish Rao was the chairman of the sub-committee, and himself and Tummala Nageswara Rao were members. The redesign was done as per the decision of the expert committee, technical committee and sub-committee. The technical committee gave many reports. Finally, the cabinet took the decision to build the three barrages. Rajendar clarified that he was not aware of the payment of Rs 59 crore to an agency for the preparation of DPR. The cabinet gave all approvals on Kaleshwaram and Corporation was also floated to raise funds for project construction. The previous government planned to borrow funds from the corporation and repay the loans. But, the funds were not collected by the corporation. However, all the funds for the project were released from the corporation and the role of the Finance department was nothing in the entire episode. The former Finance minister also said that the irrigation department was given the powers to borrow and pay the funds.

Security forces eliminate top Maoist leader with reward of Rs 45 Lakh
As part of the ongoing anti-Naxal operation in the National Park area of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, security forces have recovered the body of an high-ranking Maoist leader, who was killed during an encounter. His body was recovered on Friday, along with an AK-47 rifle, explosives and other arms and identification indicated the recovered body to be of Bhaskar Rao alias Mailarapu Adellu a member of the Telangana State Committee of the CPI (Maoist) outfit. advertisementBhaskar, a resident of Adilabad district in Telangana, was the Secretary of the Mancherial-Komarambheem (MKB) division of the Telangana State Committee of the CPI (Maoist) outfit. He was also a member of the Special Zonal Committee (SZC) of the Telangana State Committee and had a total bounty of Rs 45 lakh on him. This includes a bounty of Rs 25 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Rs 20 lakhs in Telangana. Earlier, on Thursday, the dead body of Central Committee member Gautam alias Sudhakar was recovered by the forces during the operation. An Ak-47 rifle was also recovered from him. Must Watch
