Spurs, De'Aaron Fox signs 4-year, $229M extension —report

GMA Network04-08-2025
The San Antonio Spurs signed point guard De'Aaron Fox to a maximum contract extension for four years and $229 million, ESPN reported Monday.
The Spurs acquired Fox from the Sacramento Kings in February, and he was slated to become an unrestricted free agent after this coming season. Instead, the team chose to lock up his contract through 2029-30.
Fox, 27, averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists per game in 17 appearances (all starts) for San Antonio. His season was cut short in March, when he had season-ending surgery to repair a tendon in his left pinkie finger.
In eight NBA seasons between the Kings and Spurs, Fox has averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals over 531 games (517 starts). He was the fifth overall draft pick by Sacramento in 2017 and won NBA Clutch Player of the Year for the 2022-23 campaign.
The Spurs will have a crowded backcourt in 2025-26 with Fox and a pair of former top-five draft picks: Stephon Castle, the reigning Rookie of the Year, and 2025 second overall selection Dylan Harper. —Reuters/Field Level Media

NBA releases 2025-26 regular-season schedule

The NBA released its 2025-26 regular-season schedule Thursday, revealing the dates of marquee matchups and highlighting its new three-pronged media rights deal. This will be the first season of an 11-year agreement that sees NBCUniversal and Amazon get in on the NBA action alongside ESPN, with Turner Sports' TNT out of the picture. The NBA's national broadcast schedule with these new partners was revealed. It features games on ABC, NBC and Peacock on Sundays; Peacock alone on Mondays; and NBC and Peacock on Tuesdays. ESPN will carry national broadcasts Wednesdays and Fridays, ABC will add games on Saturday and Prime Video will feature on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Thanksgiving week will feature a pair of star forwards visiting their old digs for the first time. Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets will play at the Phoenix Suns on Nov. 24, Durant's first time facing Phoenix following an offseason trade. Then, on Nov. 28, the Dallas Mavericks will visit Los Angeles to mark Anthony Davis' first game at the Lakers since the blockbuster deal featuring him and Luka Doncic trading uniforms. Some marquee games already were known, including the opening night doubleheader on Oct. 21 (Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors at Lakers) and the five-game slate on Christmas Day. NBC will carry the Oct. 21 doubleheader, while ESPN gets in on the action Oct. 22. The new-look Mavericks and No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg will play host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs that day after the Cleveland Cavaliers open the season at the New York Knicks. The Boston Celtics dealt Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers this offseason. Portland -- which also brought back longtime star guard Damian Lillard -- will visit Boston on Jan. 26. As for the Lakers, it remains up in the air whether LeBron James will play beyond this season, his 23rd in the league. His final trip to his hometown Cavaliers is scheduled for Jan. 28. Each team learned of 80 of its 82 regular-season dates Thursday. The other two games will be determined by the results of the in-season NBA Cup. — Field Level Media/Reuters

NBA: Spurs' Jeremy Sochan injures calf training with national team

San Antonio Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan injured his calf while training with Poland's national team, which will keep him out of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 tournament that starts Aug. 27. In an announcement by the Polish Basketball Federation, Sochan confirmed that he would miss EuroBasket but added that "doctors predict that I will be fully healthy" in time for the start of Spurs training camp. The 22-year-old expects to return to San Antonio to continue his recovery. "In the face of injury, Jeremy received professional help in Poland," Spurs general manager Brian Wright said in the statement. "Cooperation with the staff and management of KoszKadry has always been exemplary. In this situation, however, the best option is to return to San Antonio." The ninth overall pick out of Baylor in 2022, Sochan has been a steady presence in the Spurs' rotation. He has averaged 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists in his first three seasons while shooting 46.8 percent from the field. — Field Level Media/Reuters

Disney tops earnings forecasts with streaming gains, raises guidance

Walt Disney posted better-than-expected quarterly results, led by gains in streaming business, which is expected to be the centerpiece of its growth strategy in coming years. REUTERS/ Brendan McDermid/ File photo LOS ANGELES — Walt Disney posted better-than-expected quarterly results and raised its annual profit forecast on Wednesday, led by gains in streaming business, which is expected to be the centerpiece of its growth strategy in coming years. In the last 24 hours, the media and entertainment company entered two major deals with the National Football League and WWE as it readies its $29.99-per-month ESPN streaming service that will give viewers access to sporting events, including the NFL and National Basketball Association. Adjusted earnings per share rose 16% from a year ago to $1.61 for Disney's fiscal third quarter. Analysts had expected $1.47, according to the LSEG data. The WWE deal will bring exclusive rights to major wrestling events, including WrestleMania and Royal Rumble to the streaming service, set to launch August 21. CEO Bob Iger said the launch of the ESPN app and the NFL deal, along with a coming integration of Hulu into Disney+, would create "a truly differentiated streaming proposition." The NFL will take a 10% equity stake in Disney's ESPN sports network. The deal values were not disclosed. The company has been building its streaming business in sports and entertainment as traditional TV viewing declines. It is also expanding its popular theme parks and cruise lines. For the full year ending in September, the company projected adjusted EPS of $5.85, a 10-cent rise from prior forecasts. "With ambitious plans ahead for all our businesses, we're not done building, and we are excited for Disney's future," Iger said. The company projected it would add 10 million Disney+ and Hulu subscribers in the current quarter, most of them from an expanded partnership with cable operator Charter. In the just-ended quarter, Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions increased by 2.6 million to 183 million, powering a 6% increase in revenue at the direct-to-consumer business. The unit posted an operating income of $346 million, compared with a loss of $19 million a year ago. Operating income in the entertainment division fell 15% to $1 billion. Disney attributed the drop to lower results from traditional television networks and the strong performance of the film "Inside Out 2" a year earlier. Disney's parks division reported a 13% gain in operating income to $2.5 billion. Profit at domestic parks rose 22% even with new competition in Orlando, Florida, from Universal's CMCSA.O Epic Universe, which opened in late May, as visitors increased their spending. Walt Disney World in Orlando posted record revenue for the quarter, Disney Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston said. At the sports unit, operating income rose 29% to $1 billion. Domestic ESPN profit fell 3%, partly from higher programming and production costs, including rate increases for NBA games and college sports. — Reuters
