5 beauty lessons I learnt from Bend it Like Beckham that I still stand by in my thirties
Like most millennial women, the news that a Bend It Like Beckham sequel might actually be happening has sent me into a nostalgia spiral. It's been over 20 years since Jesminder and Jules first lit up our screens with football kits, forbidden friendships and just the right amount of lip gloss. And while the original was full of tear-jerking and laugh-out-loud moments (both on and off the pitch), I can't help but think about the beauty lessons the 2002 movie taught me– the ones I still lean on in my thirties.
For a film about sport and family expectations, it also understood femininity in a way that was incredibly ahead of its time. It also inspired a whole generation of girls, like me, to get stuck into sport, but not to shy away from loving beauty. So, from a very important lip gloss lesson to learnings about headbands, here are the beauty rules I still follow after learning them from Kiera Knightley and Parminder Nagra.
Less is more when it comes to skin
Jess (Parminder) barely wore make-up, and yet she glowed. Whether she was sprinting across the pitch or dealing with awkward family dinners, her skin looked real, fresh and calm. It was the first time I saw a leading character not transformed via mascara and foundation, and it was a revelation. I could picture her using a simple cleanser and a moisturiser, not a 12-step routine involving tons of actives, toners and treatments.
A simple skincare routine is something I stuck with all my twenties and now my thirties.

'Boy' cuts are
And don't let men tell you otherwise. Jules (Keira) had a choppy, boyish cut that changed how I thought about 'feminine' beauty. It wasn't long or flowing, but it framed her face perfectly and made her look interesting and angular. Model-like. Since then, I've flirted with the idea of every version of that bob that's trended over the years. I'm still attached to my long hair, but back then I really thought Jules was ahead of her game with her cut, and this turned out to be true, considering 'French bobs' and 'Italian bobs' are huge trends this year.
Copy Jules' haircut
A modern version of the Jules Bend it Like Beckham cut is the French Riviera bob, currently being worn by Sofia Richie Grainge. Sofia opted for a bob after suffering a lot of bleach and heat-related damage, but has ended up loving the cut. If you want to try it out, ask your hair stylist for a chin-length blunt bob with soft, natural movement. Request clean edges without too much layering, just enough subtle shaping to allow the ends to curve gently under and give the hair a swishy, weightless feel. Ask for it to sit just at or slightly below the chin so it can be tucked behind the ears, and mention you'd like a style that works both air-dried and blow-dried with minimal effort.
Style it to perfection with Ouai's Air Dry Foam, £26.
Sometimes, all you need is a slick of lip gloss
The clubbing scene in Germany lives rent-free in my brain: Jules in that slinky top and Jess with her hair down, her make-up still minimal, but with the addition of one tiny beauty detail: lip gloss. It was slightly metallic and incredibly juicy-looking, and made her whole face light up. It taught me that sometimes the smallest change makes the biggest impact.
To this day, I keep a gloss in every handbag. It's the thing I swipe on when I'm too tired for anything else but still want to feel pulled together. It's a Jess-approved hack that never fails me.

Older sisters know better
Pinky, Jess's glamorous older sister, might have been a side character, but she brought the drama and the beauty inspo. With her bold eyeliner, layered mid-length hair and OTT accessories, she was the Y2K big sister icon we didn't know we needed (or didn't want, back then).
And like most older sisters, she was full of unsolicited, but mostly correct, advice. Watching her and Jess' cousins strut around, I realised there's something to be said for full glam and big opinions. My own sister told me to stop over-plucking my brows in 2008, and I should have listened. Pinky would agree.

Headbands are for function, not fashion
Jess and Jules both wore sporty headbands throughout the film, and they did not care if they looked Instagrammable (RIP the pre-Instagram days, eh?) These were purely practical, and somehow that made them feel cool. Now, when I scrape my hair back for skincare or tie it up for a gym class, I think of them.
Beauty can be low-key, it can be functional and it can still be iconic. I don't think even Kiera Knightley (or David Beckham himself, who also went through a phase of wearing them in the late 90s) did enough to convince me that a plastic zigzag toothed headband is an accessory that could be worn outside of the gym (or off the pitch), but they have earned a place in our bathroom shelves from a purely practical angle.

Jet2 joins Jess Glynne in slamming White House using viral audio for deportation video
The White House used viral audio from a Jet2 advert in a post earlier this week and now the airline has addressed the situation after singer Jess Glynne shared her thoughts Airline Jet2 has said that it does not endorse a post shared by the White House promoting deportation that includes viral audio from its Jet2holiday advert. It comes after Jess Glynne, whose song features in it, spoke out over the post. Shared on X earlier this week, the post in question includes a video that shows people being handcuffed and escorted on to a plane. The caption read: "When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!" The caption references the viral audio, included in the video and the original Jet2 advert, in which voiceover artist Zoë Lister says over Jess' song Hold My Hand: "Nothing beats a Jet2holiday and right now you can save £50 per person. That's £200 off for a family of four." Zoe spoke to the Mirror about the original advert going viral recently. Jet2 has now addressed the situation following the post attracting much attention on social media. A spokesperson for the holiday provider said that it was "not endorsed by" them and expressed disappointment over the post. A spokesperson for and Jet2holidays told the PA news agency: "Our branding has become something of a viral phenomenon this summer and we are pleased to see how many people have used it in good humour. This has put a smile on many people's faces, just like our holidays do." They added: "We are of course aware of a post from the White House social media account. This is not endorsed by us in any way, and we are very disappointed to see our brand being used to promote government policy such as this." Although met with some support, the White House's post has also been criticised recently. It includes from singer-songwriter Jess, who, as previously reported, issued a response to it on Tuesday after it was uploaded on X. Jess, whose song Hold My Hand features in both the video in the post and the actual Jet2 advert, wrote: "This post honestly makes me sick." She added: "My music is about love, unity, and spreading positivity - never about division or hate." The controversy comes after the audio from the Jet2 advert has gone viral in recent weeks. It's become a meme on social media, including internationally, and, according to PA, it's been used in more than 1.9 million videos on TikTok. Zoë, who has worked on the Jet2holidays voiceovers for seven years, is said to have been taken by surprise when she noticed the audio had gone viral. She teased recently that it has "turned into the best ad campaign for years". Earlier this month, Zoë met Jess on Capital Breakfast to recreate the advert live on the radio show. Jess spoke about now performing her song Hold My Hand at concerts, saying she thinks fans are waiting to hear Zoë's script. Jess told the station: "It's mad because I feel like when I do my gigs, I feel like when I go to sing the hook, I feel like they're waiting for me to go 'nothing beats a Jet2 holiday'. It is tempting but I need to take this seriously, it can't be a joke."

Woman opens Missguided parcel from 10 years ago and can't get over contents
A woman has left people in stitches after sharing the contents of a Missguided parcel that was accidentally delivered to her 10 years ago and has remained shut ever since A Missguided parcel that landed on a woman's doorstep in 2016 has finally been opened – and the contents are causing quite the stir online. Jess, known as sideofsequins to her Instagram followers, racked up over 26,000 likes with her post as she revealed what was inside the package. The video shows Jess tearing into the parcel, which was mistakenly sent to her nearly 10 years prior. Among the first items discovered was a coupon that "expired in 2016." Then came the moment for Jess to examine intothe long-forgotten fashion finds. Jess recounted how she received the incorrect package a long time ago and decided it was time to reveal the contents of the clothing haul. She said: "In 2015, yes 2015, ten years ago, I ordered from this company. I ordered a bunch of clothes. They sent me the wrong package. I called them and they said, 'We don't want it back, keep it.' This is that package. But I never actually opened the bags inside to see what was in here. So let's do that right now." With an expired coupon as evidence of the parcel's "legitimacy," Jess sorted through the Missguided items, unveiling some unexpected pieces. Kicking off the haul, she showed off a cream-coloured bodysuit featuring a dainty tie. Jess shared: "I don't remember how this would have went in about 2016. I can't try it on because we're pregnant and this will not fit. Not even close. But how do we think this neck thing goes?" Jess was taken aback by the second item in the mystery bag - a pencil skirt. She said: "I feel that the woman who bought all this, she was making outfits. I love a girl who makes an outfit because I do the same thing." Jess continued: "Because you know in the mid 2010s we were still rocking the corporate club wear." Accompanying the skirt were more fashion finds: another pencil skirt with trendy "lace up" details, a crisp white button-up top, and a black shirt adorned with laces. The haul concluded with what Jess described as a "basic crop top." Her followers were equally intrigued and amused by the blast from the past, with comments flooding in questioning Jess's patience and expressing astonishment at the throwback items. One curious commenter couldn't hold back and wrote: "How on earth did you not tear into that the minute they said we don't need it back?" Another echoed this, sharing: "How could you have resisted? I would have instantly ripped that package open lol." A third added: "This is a time capsule! I love it." The contents left Jess pondering the story behind them, wondering aloud: "I wonder where she was going? I wonder what she was wearing this for. "I wonder who this was for. I don't even if I ever got my actual package, I hope she got hers."
