The luxury ship was still in British waters after leaving Southampton, Hants, at 6pm enroute to Bruges.
Police arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter on suspicion of murder when the two-night cruise returned on Monday.
Mr Messham is understood to have been travelling with relatives who helped him run popular motorbike stunt show the Wall of Death.
Joby Carter described him as a 'proper gent' who was part of Carter's Steam Fair until around eight years ago.
He said: 'I was absolutely gutted when I heard the news. He was a legend.
'We used to travel Carter's Steam Fair. He approached us because he had a wall of death and wanted to travel with us.
'We always got along with him. He was a proper gent, salt of the earth.
'You knew if you had a problem he would come and help you any time day or night.
'He was such a trier and did really well in the haulage business as well.
'Travelling the Wall of Death is a labour of love. You've got to love it.
Holidaymaker, 60, killed in 'fight' on luxury cruise ship hours after leaving UK as man, 57, arrested over 'murder'
"They stopped travelling with us about eight years ago. I still spoke to him a couple of times a year.
'You couldn't watch that show without the hairs on your arms coming up.'
An on-board army medic is believed to have treated stunt performer Mr Messham, who also rode motorbikes as part of the daredevil show.
His family in Sussex were too upset to speak - but some relatives have posted touching pictures in memory of their dad on Facebook.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary released the arrested suspect on bail on Tuesday afternoon.
Among shocked guests was Traitors winner Harry Clark, who was enjoying a long weekend with his girlfriend and pals on MSC Virtuosa.
Like many other passengers, the reality TV star had no idea about the tragic death until later on.
A source said: 'Harry is clearly very shocked and saddened by the news and is thinking of the individual's family and friends.
'You really don't expect that to happen on a cruise and it's a very scary situation.'
Harry, 23, who won the £95,000 prize in last year's series of the hit BBC show, took selfies with other guests during an onboard white party.
His girlfriend Anna, 24, sister of singer Connor Maynard, posted snaps captioned on Instagram: 'Stripe obsession and lift selfies on a cruise.'
Mr Messham's death was the second tragedy onboard MSC Virtuosa in a matter of months.
Colombian national Jessica Andrea Gómez Granda, 28, died after falling overboard near the Channel Islands in October.
The ship is used to film Channel 5 drama The Good Ship Murder starring X Factor winner Shayne Ward.
Det Chief Insp Matt Gillooly, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary's senior investigating officer, said: 'We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident onboard and we want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance with our enquiries.'
A spokesperson for MSC Virtuosa said: 'Following an incident on board our ship, the relevant authorities were contacted, and we are co-operating fully with their investigations. We are providing full support to those impacted.'

Police scrambled to the scene at around 10.30pm after the alarm was raised over reports of a knife assault. The boy was found bleeding on the pavement by shocked neighbours who rushed to his rescue while they waiting for emergency services. The boy was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. Police have now confirmed that a teenager, also 15, has been charged with attempted murder. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court sometime today. A statement from the force read: "A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in connection with an attempted murder in Glasgow. "Around 10.30pm on Thursday, 29 May, officers received a report of another 15-year-old male having been found seriously injured in the Denbeck Street area of Glasgow. "Emergency services attended and he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, with what were described as serious injuries. He has since been discharged. "The boy is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday, 5 June, 2025." Police probing death of 'stabbed' teen Kayden Moy swoop on Scots park Scores of emergency services descended on the street after the horror unfolded. There were visible splatters of blood on the pavement the following morning, while CID officers were seen speaking to teenagers near the crime scene. A mum-of-four, 31, who tried to keep the lad from losing consciousness, told the Scottish Sun she was talking to him to keep him awake. She said: "I just told him that his mum would come. The police said he was in a bad state. 'It's just crazy what's happening on our streets. I'm worried about my own kids' safety.' Shettleston councillor Thomas Kerr said the incident was 'heartbreaking and shocking' as fears rise over Scotland's escalating knife crime wave. He said: 'There is a knife crime epidemic in Scotland. 'Parents should not be scared for their sons or daughters to leave the house. Something needs to change. 'My thoughts are with the young man's family, and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.' A local mum-of-four, aged 38, warned that 'weans aren't safe to go anywhere'. She added: 'It seems to be getting worse.' A gran-of-two, 65, who lives near the scene, said: 'I think it's shocking that there are so many stabbings across Glasgow. 'It seems to be getting out of hand. My granddaughter is around the same age and I'm worried for her safety.' The latest violence shock comes days after we told how John Swinney was warned his 'weak and reckless' justice system is costing lives amid alarm at a deadly knife crime wave. Scottish Tories leader Russell Findlay accused the First Minister of 'fuelling youth violence' amid a 'sickening' 600 per cent rise in serious assaults committed by teens in five years. The Holyrood showdown came after day tripper Kayden Moy, 16, was allegedly stabbed to death at Irvine beach in Ayrshire on May 17. In a separate incident another teen was allegedly stabbed at Portobello Beach in Edinburgh the day before. Meanwhile, Scotland's top cop called for a crackdown on violence in schools after we revealed a boy of seven allegedly took a blade into Heathfield Primary in Ayr to attack another pupil. We also told earlier this week how a 10-year-old lad was threatened with a blade by a tearaway classmate in Kilmarnock. A boy of the same age was reported to authorities over the incident. Earlier this month, a 14-year-old thug was locked up for five years for killing Kory McCrimmon, 16, in Glasgow in a fight over £50. And a group of teenagers are currently facing charges in connection with the death of 15-year-old Glasgow teen Amen Teklay. 5 Amen Teklay was allegedly stabbed to death in Glasgow 5 Kayden Moy was allegedly stabbed at Irvine Beach before he died

Brit backpacker, 24, faces 20 years in jail after ‘mowing down dad-of-two on e-scooter following six-hour pub session'
The victim's family has since called on authorities to tighten e-scooter hire regulations HOLS HORROR Brit backpacker, 24, faces 20 years in jail after 'mowing down dad-of-two on e-scooter following six-hour pub session' A BRITISH backpacker is facing 20 years behind bars after allegedly ploughing into a dad-of-two with a hired e-scooter while more than three times the drink-drive limit. Alicia Kemp, 24, was denied bail in an Australian court after being charged over the horror smash that left 51-year-old Thanh Phan with fatal head injuries. 2 Durty Nelly's Irish Pub in Perth, where Kemp worked and allegedly started her six-hour drinking session Credit: Durty Nelly's 2 Thanh Phan, 51, was a devoted dad-of-two killed in the e-scooter crash Credit: Linkedin The holidaymaker is accused of striking Phan from behind while speeding down a footpath in Perth with a friend on board as a passenger. The Brit had also been drinking for six hours before the crash, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. Prosecutors said Kemp had a blood alcohol content of 0.158 when she 'careered into his back' at up to 25km/h as the dad stood at a crossing on Saturday night. The court heard walkers had to 'take evasive action' to avoid Kemp's 'inexplicably dangerous' riding, which was captured on CCTV. Read more world news WISH PERU WERE HERE Peru Two's Michaella McCollum soaks in sun after revealing prison hell Her 26-year-old passenger also suffered a fractured skull and broken nose. Kemp, who was in Australia on a four-month tourist visa with her partner, had been working at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub in Perth. She had been drinking with a friend from 2.30pm before they hired the e-scooter just before 8.30pm. Her bail bid was rejected after a magistrate ruled she posed too great a flight risk. 'It's a very difficult decision for the court to make,' the magistrate said. 'The temptation might be that [she] won't return… I can't manage that risk.' Brit facing death penalty in coke smuggling plot all smiles after court rant Phan's devastated family described him as a 'beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend', and are now calling for a crackdown on e-scooter safety laws. 'We also call for a review of the governance and safety regulations surrounding hired e-scooters to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk,' they said in a statement. In a statement released through police, Phan's grieving family pleaded for privacy and called on authorities to tighten e-scooter hire regulations. 'We also call for a review of the governance and safety regulations surrounding hired e-scooters to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk,' they said. Phan's loved ones described him as a 'beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend,' and have urged policymakers to curb the growing number of e-scooter incidents in Perth's Central Business District. Local Councillor Anita Fong, who has been campaigning for stricter e-scooter rules, said yesterday that the accident underlined the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures. 'We have seen too many near-misses and hospitalisations in recent months,' Fong stated. 'This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call.' Kemp remains in custody on remand and is due back in court on July 15. Police prosecutors argued that Kemp's status as a foreign tourist working in Perth made her a flight risk, and highlighted the severity of her charges. Western Australian police have confirmed they will continue to investigate whether any additional offences, including possible public nuisance charges, could be laid against Kemp. Meanwhile, e-scooter hire companies in the city are already feeling pressure to introduce speed limiters and more rigorous ID checks after dark.

Missing woman last seen near Hyde Park three months ago spotted in London pub
A woman who was reported missing in March has mysteriously reappeared in a London pub three months after she was last seen. Portia Vincent-Kirby, from Finchley, vanished en route to Victoria Station after an evening with friends in Hyde Park on February 21. She was then spotted out of the blue in the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel on May 14, but has not been seen since. Her bank cards and passport have not been used since March 3, and her phone has also not pinged since this then. Pictures from the pub show Portia smiling and wearing a faux fur cossack hat. She is described as slim with blue eyes and shoulder-length dyed blonde hair. The 33-year-old is also known to often wear baseball caps. Portia's devastated family are appealing for more information about where she might be. Metro spoke to her brother, Max, in March after her family reported her missing. He criticised the police over their approach to her being missing and urged them to be more proactive with her case. He told Metro: 'It took two weeks after she was reported missing just for them to release a picture of her. 'We have heard very little from them, it's been left to us to find her. All we have been told is her bank cards haven't been used – which isn't good.' More Trending In an updated statement from police last night, her mum, Janina, said: 'We are all very worried as Portia is very vulnerable. Portia has not been in contact with or seen by any family or friends since February. 'We appeal to the public for anyone to please come forward if they know anything about her or her whereabouts. We also appeal to Portia directly, please get in touch with any of your family or friends.' PC Harjinder Kang, from the Met's north west missing persons unit, added: 'We are growing increasingly concerned for Portia's safety, as this behaviour is out of character for her. We urge anyone who may have seen her to contact police. 'Officers have been carrying out a number of enquiries in an effort to trace her and we are now turning to the public for help. Please get in touch if you can help us locate Portia.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page.
