Penang Future Foundation Awards RM44.5 Million In Scholarships over The Last Decade
GEORGE TOWN, May 23 (Bernama) -- The Penang Future Foundation (PFF), a flagship initiative by the Penang Government, has awarded approximately 805 scholarships worth a total of RM44.5 million since its establishment in 2015.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the foundation, established to nurture local talent and support Malaysia's next generation of leaders, is funded through a blend of public and private sector contributions.
He noted that last year alone, 54 students from diverse backgrounds were awarded scholarships in high-demand fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), accountancy, and finance.
'As chairman of the PFF, I am immensely proud that this talent scholarship initiative by the state government has marked its 10th year in existence and continuously strives to make a difference.
'In spearheading the state's growth for the next 50 years and to remain as a focal location for investments, attracting and retaining talents have become even more critical in ensuring a steady pipeline of talents to meet the growing demands by industry players,' he said in a statement today.
Therefore, Chow said PFF welcomes prospective applicants from all over Malaysia to apply for either the PFF Penang Scholar or the PFF Mutiara Scholar scholarship awards.
He noted that interested candidates are advised to check the eligibility requirements, as both categories have different criteria based on, among other factors, the candidate's financial background and scholastic record.
'The PFF Penang Scholar caters for those with a CGPA of 3.67 and above, while the PFF Mutiara Scholar is available for applicants whose CGPA is between 3.00 to 3.66,' he said.
The application window for the PFF Scholarship 2025 will be open from July 21 to Aug 15, and interested students are encouraged to keep a lookout for periodic announcements through PFF's website at www.penangfuturefoundation.my.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- The Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 will be held on a large scale at Lumut Waterfront from June 13 to 15, featuring more than 200 government services for the public. Ministry of Communications, deputy secretary-general (Telecommunications Infrastructure), Mano Verabathran, said the event will involve various federal and state agencies, including the MADANI Sale initiative, which offers essential items at discounts of 10 to 30 per cent. 'Visitors can take advantage of the discounted goods and also participate in walk-in interviews. Ten companies from different sectors will be present, offering around 1,000 job vacancies. We welcome job seekers to attend,' he said during Bernama TV's Apa Khabar Malaysia programme today. Mano added that 36 booths will be set up to provide a wide range of government services, enabling visitors to carry out official matters during the three-day event. 'This initiative is part of the government's continuous effort to bring services and policies closer to the people, while fostering greater public trust in the country's direction,' he said. Penang looks to Alps for lessons on eco-friendly tourism, state leaders on Swiss visit till June 16
GEORGE TOWN, June 10 — The Penang government will be exploring the best practices in mountain tourism and sustainable transport systems based on the car-free village or Bettmeralp in Switzerland. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is leading an official delegation to Switzerland and Austria from today until June 16. He said the visit is hosted by Doppelmayr and Hartasuma. 'It marks a significant step forward in the implementation of one of Penang's key sustainable mobility initiatives,' he said in a statement issued by his office today. He said the delegation will be engaging with the Mayor of Bettmeralp, Raron, Switzerland and Aletsch Bahnen AG, the local cable car company on mountain tourism and sustainable transport systems, as Bettmeralp, a renowned car-free village, is accessible exclusively by cable car. The delegation will also visit key suppliers and industry leaders involved in the cable car project such as Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH - headquarters and manufacturing facility in Wolfurt, Austria, Fatzer AG – cable car ropeway supplier in Romanshorn, Switzerland, Garaventa AG – funicular system supplier in Goldau, Switzerland and CWA Constructions SA – gondola cabin supplier in Olten, Switzerland. Chow said the technical visits are crucial for understanding the advanced engineering, operational procedures, and stringent safety standards of world-class cable car systems for Penang's environmental sustainability. 'The aim is to ensure that Penang Hill's cable car infrastructure is delivered to the highest international benchmarks,' he said. He gave an assurance that his state government is committed to delivering the Penang Hill Cable Car Project while ensuring its safety, quality and service reliability. The tender to build the cable car project was awarded to local rail industry pioneer, Hartasuma Sdn Bhd, in December 2022 through a public private partnership on design, finance, build, operate and transfer. Hartasuma is expected to invest RM245 million in the project and the project is based on a 30-year concession period. The targeted completion date for the cable car is at the end of 2026. It is expected to open for operations by the second quarter of 2027.

Ringgit slightly up against US dollar amid cautious sentiment
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened slightly higher against the US dollar on Tuesday amid caution about the outcome of trade talks between China and the United States. At 8 am, the local note made a small rebound to 4.2275/2370 against the greenback compared to Monday's close of 4.2290/2345. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd's chief economist, Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, said the US dollar index (DXY) was down 0.25 per cent to 98.939 points as the US and China trade talks proceeded as planned, with positive indications from US officials about the negotiations. He highlighted that data from China showed the country's trade with the United States has been declining significantly, with exports and imports falling 34.5 per cent and 18.1 per cent, respectively, in May. 'The figures represented the second consecutive month of contraction, showing that the tariff shocks have had a significant impact on international trade. Meanwhile, the negative print for China's consumer price index has been ongoing for four consecutive months, with the latest reading standing at minus 0.1 per cent year-on-year in April, indicating a challenging economic outlook given weak demand,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam noted that the USD/MYR remained in a narrow range between RM4.231 and RM4.2458 yesterday amid cautious sentiment among traders and investors, with a similar trend expected to continue today. In early trade, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9242/9310 from Monday's 2.9344/2.9384, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7300/7428 from 5.7392/7466 and gained vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8303/8412 from 4.8316/8379. The local currency traded mixed against most of its ASEAN peers. It improved versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2876/2952 from 3.2908/2953 but fell against the Thai baht to 12.9463/9846 from 12.9414/9642 on Monday. It traded almost flat vis-à-vis the Indonesian rupiah at 259.4/260.1 from 259.5/260.0 and was unchanged against the Philippine peso at 7.57/7.59.
