Gardaí fine tractor driver for using mobile phone
According to An Garda Síochána Kildare, one of their team – on mountain bike patrol – saw the tractor driver using a mobile phone while driving on the main street of Naas.
The driver received a €120 fine and three penalty points were issued under a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN).
In a post on social media, An Garda Síochána Kildare said: 'Distracted driving is dangerous – keep your eyes on the road, not on your phone'.
According to the Road Safety Authority (RSA), it is an offence to hold a mobile phone in your hand or support it with another part of your body, e.g., between your head and shoulder, while driving.
The RSA has also highlighted that anyone caught using their mobile phone while driving will receive a fixed charge of €120, and three penalty points.
However if a driver fails to pay the €120 fine, this increases to a fixed charge of €180 after 28 days, and five penalty points, on conviction, are also applied.
Gardaí
During the June Bank Holiday 2025 weekend roads policing operation to promote road safety, gardaí caught 210 people using a mobile phone while driving.
This figure is a reduction on the number of people observed using their phone while driving over the May Bank Holiday weekend – which according to a garda report on the roads policing operation over May 1 to May 6, was 270 drivers.
An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, slow down and always choose a speed that is appropriate to the driving conditions, wear your seatbelt, and keep your eyes on the road.

Local authorities take road safety message to Emerald Park
The event, held last week and supported by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and Emerald Park's management team, featured the RSA's Interactive Shuttle Bus, Roll-Over Car and Virtual Reality Road Safety Goggles — all designed to be engaging and interactive to best educate the public on keeping themselves and others safe on our roads. Gardaí from the Mounted, Roads Policing and Community Policing Units were joined by Meath County Council's Fire and Rescue Service, while the Garda Band provided live music for visitors. Meath County Council Road Safety Officer Audrey Norris said Emerald Park was the ideal venue to reach a wide audience. "With so many people heading through the doors of Emerald Park every day, it really was the perfect place to deliver these important, life-saving messages to as many people as possible and I would like to say a big thank you to Charles Coyle (CEO of Emerald Park) and all his team for accommodating this event,' she said. "The engagement we had with people of all ages was fantastic and shows the very real appetite people in Meath and all over the country have to change road-user behaviours and mindsets." Superintendent Yvonne Murphy of An Garda Síochána said: "102 people have died on Irish roads this year. That is 102 doors we have knocked on to give families the most devastating news about their loved ones. "That is why events like this are so important and it was inspiring to see so many young children - the future road-users in this county and country - show such interest in learning all about road safety.' "This was a great collaboration of all of those involved working together to keep people safe." Paul Flynn, Operations Manager at Emerald Park said: "We were proud to host and support Meath County Council and An Garda Síochána for this Road Safety Awareness Day and we were delighted to see the event receive such a terrific reaction from Emerald Park visitors. "Our modes of travel might all be different, but we are all road-users, so learning more about road safety will always be a universal lesson." Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme.

Gardaí stop driver carrying 'full load' of silage while using phone
Members of An Garda Síochána have pulled a motorist driving a tractor carrying "a full load" of silage over for using his mobile phone. In a post on social media, Gardaí said that the man has "landed deep in it" after he was spotted using his phone while driving. According to the Gardaí a fixed notice charge has been issued to the driver of the tractor. It is an offence to hold a mobile phone in your hand, or to support it with another part of your body (for example, between your head and shoulder), while driving. The only exception is if you are calling emergency services on 999 or 112. You can legally talk on your phone using a hands-free system, but the Road Safety Authority advises very strongly against this. Separately, last week Gardaí in Co. Leitrim confirmed that they recovered a number of items stolen from a farmyard. It is understood that the theft took place on a farmyard in the Ballinamore area of the county, not far from the border with Co. Cavan in the early hours of July 15. The stolen items included a 2016 white Renault Master van, a motorbike, a quad trailer holding a ride-on powerfloat (for use on fresh concrete). During the incident a concrete drill, a chainsaw, a manual powerfloat, a cement mixer and a power washer were also taken. In a statement, An Garda Síochána told Agriland: "Gardaí in Co. Leitrim continue to investigate the theft of number of items from the yard of a property at Ballinamore between 12:10a.m and 6:20a.m on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. "Following a search, some of the property was recovered. "Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. "This includes anyone who was in the area at the time and has camera (including dash-cam) footage. "They can contact Ballinamore Garda Station on 071 964 4002 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111," the statement added.
