Mexican influencer Valeria Márquez shot dead while livestreaming: How a gift led to her murder

Time of India15-05-2025

A Mexican beauty influencer was shot dead while livestreaming from her salon, with authorities now investigating her close friend and romantic partner as key suspects in the killing.
Valeria Márquez
, 23, was broadcasting to her followers on TikTok from her salon, Blossom the Beauty Lounge, in Zapopan, Jalisco, when a man entered the premises on Tuesday evening and shot her twice once in the chest and once in the head. She died instantly, slumped over in her chair while the stream continued to roll.
According to local reports, Márquez had been holding a stuffed pig part of a series of gifts allegedly sent by her friend Vivian De la Torre when she was gunned down.
Moments earlier, she had been speaking excitedly about an 'expensive' gift she was expecting. De la Torre, a fellow influencer from Jalisco, had reportedly told her to stay at the salon and wait for the delivery.
In the footage, which has since circulated widely online, Márquez is seen chatting with followers and clutching the soft toy when she suddenly reacts to being struck, reaching for her ribcage before collapsing.
The livestream only ended when someone picked up her phone, briefly revealing their face to viewers.
Jalisco state prosecutors confirmed Márquez's identity and said the attack is being investigated as a potential femicide. Authorities are also looking into possible links to organised crime. One suspect is her partner Ricardo Ruíz Velasco, known as "RR" or "El Tripa", a figure linked to the
Jalisco New Generation Cartel
(CJNG). Local media reports that the two had been romantically involved for several months.
Despite speculation, state security officials said there is no direct evidence yet connecting Márquez's murder to cartel violence. However, the killing occurred in a region where the CJNG maintains a strong presence, and where violent disputes between rival groups are common.
The mayor of Zapopan, Juan José Frangie, said his office had received no prior complaints from Márquez regarding threats or harassment.
'It's unbelievable one moment she's making a video, and the next she's murdered,' he said. 'Femicide is the worst thing.'
De la Torre, who has thousands of followers across Instagram and TikTok, had previously posted videos dancing alongside Márquez. Her proximity to the victim on the day of the murder has drawn public suspicion, though she has not yet been formally charged.
The murder has shocked Márquez's fans, many of whom have flooded her final posts with messages of grief and disbelief. Her death comes amid rising concerns about gender-based violence in Mexico, where, according to the UN, around 10 women are murdered each day.

Court granted Sharmistha Panoli protection after threats on social media: Lawyer

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 6 (ANI): Following the interim bail granted to Law student Sharmistha Panoli by Calcutta High Court, her lawyer Kanchan Jaju said that the court has granted her protection after she received threats on social media. Advocate Kanchan Jaju said that the bail procedure is in process, and after the signature of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), it would be sent to jail, and she would be released at 5 pm. 'The court has granted her protection. She has received threats, and after the court's order to take action against any threat, there should be a reduction in it. On social media, she is receiving a lot of threats. Her parents are happy she got bail,' she added. MD Saimimuddin said, 'One of the conditions of bail was that the bond would be furnished to the satisfaction of the learned CJM at Alipur. Bond has been furnished. We have deposited an affidavit. We will send the release order from the court soon. There are some formalities of the correctional home. After that, she will be released. She will be released at 5 or 6 pm.' Sharmistha Panoli, arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media post, was granted interim bail by Calcutta High Court on Thursday. The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her. Her father, Prithviraj Panoli, expressed relief, citing her health issues, including kidney problems and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Prithviraj Panoli said, 'I am very happy. No father would like his daughter to stay in jail. Her mother was crying for a long time, but she is very happy now. There were two concerns: her kidney problem and ADHD. She needs regular medicine, but since we didn't have a prescription, the medicine wasn't given in jail.' 'Also, when the video was posted, we found out after two days and told her to delete it. We hoped this would be a lesson for her, and that she would do better in the future,' Panoli said. According to Sharmistha's lawyer, DP Singh, bail was granted on three conditions: Sharmistha must surrender her passport, cooperate with the investigation, and sign a bail bond. Singh argued that Sharmistha is a victim of circumstances and that her social media post was a defence of her country based on videos she had seen. He questioned the severity of the response, suggesting that the community's reaction was disproportionate to her actions. The 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of a community with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15. (ANI)

Mind the gap: Cop focus on safe distance between vehicles

Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police launched a comprehensive awareness campaign titled 'Mind the Gap' on Friday, focusing on the growing menace of tailgating, which has led to multiple freak road accidents and even road rage incidents across the city in recent months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tailgating is driving too closely behind another vehicle. The initiative, which combines both digital and on-ground efforts, aims to educate drivers about maintaining safe distances between vehicles. "We observed a concerning rise in road incidents linked to tailgating. In the past three months alone, we received dozens of complaints where tailgating was the primary cause," said a senior officer. The campaign will utilise social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and Instagram, to disseminate educational content and safety guidelines. Additionally, traffic officers plan to conduct awareness sessions at major intersections across the city. According to police data, tailgating-related incidents increase during peak hours on major arterial roads like EM Bypass and AJC Bose Road. The campaign introduces the "three-second" rule — maintaining a minimum three-second gap between vehicles — as a standard safety measure. Digital displays at key traffic signals will demonstrate proper distances to be maintained between vehicles and showcase real-time examples of safe driving practices. "We are not incorporating a penalty right now and clubbing it with an MV Act offence. We expect better driver behaviour at the crossings and even during parking," said an ACP. Cops also plan to partner with several driving schools and automotive associations to extend the campaign's reach. Commuter Sumit Banerjee hailed the initiative. "I have experienced aggressive tailgating numerous times. It is dangerous. The two-wheeler riders are the worst offenders." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Cops will monitor the campaign's effectiveness through CCTV footage. It will run for an initial period of a few weeks, after which the police will evaluate its success and consider extending it based on the results achieved. For more information about the campaign, citizens can visit the Kolkata Traffic Police website or call their helpline at 1073.
