(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Accepting Nick Adams as the next US ambassador to Malaysia will be seen as a direct insult to the Muslim community and the Malaysians who support Palestine, a PAS Youth leader said today. Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar claimed Adams had previously made Islamophobic comments and expressed strong support for Israel. He pointed to a post by Adams on social media, in which he claimed to have pressured a US restaurant to dismiss a waitress for wearing a 'Free Palestine' pin. 'As a Muslim-majority nation that upholds justice and stands in solidarity with the oppressed, Malaysia cannot accept the appointment of someone who openly targets those who support Palestine and ridicules any expression of solidarity with the Palestinian cause. 'If the government remains silent or accepts this appointment, it will be seen as a direct insult to the Muslim community and all Malaysians who firmly support Palestine,' he said in a Facebook post. Sukri also urged Wisma Putra to exercise its rights under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which allows host countries to reject ambassadorial nominees deemed unsuitable or potentially disruptive to domestic harmony. 'We urge the Malaysian government to use its powers to reject Nick Adams's nomination and send a clear message to the world: Malaysia will never allow itself to become a platform for Zionist normalisation or a testing ground for Islamophobic extremism,' he said. A naturalised American citizen originally from Australia, Adams is known for his support of former president Donald Trump and was active in the 2024 US election campaign. His nomination was submitted to the US Senate on July 9 and has since drawn criticism over his history of inflammatory online commentary, including remarks targeting Muslims. The current US ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D Kagan, began his posting slightly over a year ago and remains in the role for now. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #NST180years: A tradition of trust and a vision for the future

THE New Straits Times has been a faithful chronicler of Malaysia's unfolding story since 1845. From ink-stained broadsheets to today's digital platforms, we are the nation's trusted witness, recording every pivotal moment with care and conviction. As the Fourth Estate, the NST carries a responsibility that goes beyond daily headlines. We uphold the highest standards of journalism, integrity, accountability and an unyielding commitment to the truth. In a media landscape clouded by noise and misinformation, the NST has stood as a benchmark of credibility, telling every story with clarity and balance. Today, this commitment continues as we evolve. The NST is harnessing the power of digital technology, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Our AI-powered newsroom delivers real-time updates, adding layers to each story as they develop. Our investigative team pursues stories that directly impact you. Our multimedia storytelling brings the news to life in ways our founders never imagined. By embracing these innovations, we give readers faster access to accurate information, interactive content and the tools to navigate an increasingly complex world. The NST is not just adapting to change, it is shaping it. We are pushing boundaries to deliver journalism that goes beyond the surface. From analysis to in-depth features and incisive commentary, we examine every issue from multiple perspectives. In 2014 and 2015, the NST broke the 30-year dominance of Bahasa Malaysia newspapers by winning the prestigious Kajai Award, back to back. Securing Malaysia's top journalism honour two years in a row stands as a testament to our commitment to investigative excellence and impactful reporting. The NST continues to earn international recognition, with top awards from the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) and the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), for its excellence in feature writing and news reporting. Even as news consumption evolves, from print to digital, social media and television, our core values remain the same. The New Straits Times will always stand for truth, integrity and objectivity. Formats may shift and technology will advance, but our purpose endures: to deliver journalism worthy of Malaysia's past, present and future. In our relentless pursuit to innovate, the NST is launching "Heard the News?", an initiative to help transform Malaysians into an enlightened, knowledge-based society. Its goals are clear: to empower citizens to be better informed, strengthen their command of English and support the government's aspiration to make Malaysians more competitive globally. It is a natural extension of our nation-building mission, one we have proudly embraced for 180 years. We stand today on the shoulders of giants, generations of reporters, editors and visionaries who paved the way. They set a standard of excellence that guides us to this day, reminding today's journalists, and those who will inherit their mantle of our shared responsibility, to uphold the principles they fought so hard to defend. This isn't just our history, it's yours. And for the next 180 years, we will continue writing it together.

#NST180years: Marking a milestone - A legacy of 180 years, built by many

I WOULD like to extend my deepest gratitude and warmest congratulations to all employees, past and present, on the occasion of the New Straits Times' 180th anniversary. One hundred and eighty years is indeed a remarkable milestone by any measure — one that only a few organisations worldwide can truly claim. The NST's story is inextricably woven into Malaysia's rich and colourful tapestry. Today, both the nation and this newspaper move forward with resilience and confidence, meeting daunting challenges in an increasingly complex world. Despite being 180 years old, the NST remains a cornerstone and bedrock of the country's media landscape. We have embraced the social media age, dedicating more focus and resources to our digital platforms to deliver the diverse content Malaysians, especially the younger generation, seek. The NST's achievements over the years are the result of the dedication, sacrifice and teamwork of countless professionals who poured their energy and passion into its pages. Today, let us honour all those who came before us, each playing their part in shaping the NST into the respected institution and trusted name it is today. To those currently carrying the mantle, your hard work, perseverance and dedication have ensured that the NST — both digital and print — remains the source of reference for Malaysians from all walks of life, including leaders, businesspeople and students. The NST continues to be their trusted destination for news, knowledge and a place to hone their language skills. On this historic and momentous occasion of the NST's 180th anniversary, let us all renew our commitment to do our best to ensure the flame of excellence continues to burn brighter than ever. Thank you.
