17-goal Arsenal youth forward signs new deal

Though Friday's Arsenal news was understandably dominated by Ethan Nwaneri's new deal, the Gunners also confirmed a fresh contract for young striker Andre Harriman-Annous.
Harriman-Annous was into the final year of his scholarship deal, but Arsenal have now tied him down to professional terms.
'It's a really good day to sign my first professional contract,' Harriman-Annous said. 'I'm a fan of Arsenal so it's a dream come true really.
'I want to keep playing in the under-21s, hopefully with England too. I want to go to the under-19 Euros at the end of the season and hopefully, if I keep pushing, I'll be on the bench and make my debut with the first team. Hopefully, I can make that possible.'

As first professional deals are capped at three years, it's likely but unconfirmed that Harriman-Annous' new contract runs until 2028.
Harriman-Annous has been involved in Arsenal's pre-season squad throughout the last few weeks, even making an appearance on the pitch against Newcastle United.
The striker was perhaps unfortunate that just as Kai Havertz started to need a break, Viktor Gyokeres arrived to take his place. But at just 17 years old, there will be further opportunities for the youngster in the future.

The versatile forward can also play on the wings, and he hasn't had much trouble adapting to various teams and competitions.
In 2024/25, Harriman-Annous played in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy with the u21s, the UEFA Youth League with the u19s, and the u18 Premier League, the FA Youth Cup, and the u18 Premier League Cup with the u18s. He scored in every one of those competitions, racking up 17 goals.
For the time being, as the player mentions, the aim is simply to step up into the u21 team on a more regular basis. Having played twice as many minutes in the u18 Premier League compared to the Premier League 2 last season, he's very much still making that transition. A first-team promotion can wait.

As such, while last season's tactical plan was all about adding more control in possession, rather than constantly playing in transition, this season will be about utilising more dynamic technicians. Just through watching the pre-season games, you get a sense that there is substantially more creativity in the side and the attack is far more unpredictable because of how free the players are. No one's position is set in stone, with Wirtz and Ekitike constantly moving around the pitch to create different options, leaving opposition sides feeling lost in defence. It's a little bit like PSG last season. Later in the interview, Slot spoke about how you have to evolve tactically in order to continue succeeding at the top level, noting that you need to be able to excel in every aspect of the game. He added: "We've been a threat over all these years under Jurgen [Klopp] and even last season in transition as well and I think now if you want to learn the league, you have to be good at everything - in transitions, in attack, in set plays, defensively really strong and using high press and in a low block, that is what this league does to every team that wants to win. "You have to be at your best in every part of football and that's that we are trying. We are working really hard on that, to become as best as possible. I don't know where I read it somewhere, but it was something like 'we try to reach perfection, but we reach excellence along the way'." There's a maturity to this Liverpool team now. It's a little bit like watching an XI of galacticos, not just because they cost a lot, but because of the sheer amount of talent that Slot can utilise tactically. Just last season, it felt like Mohamed Salah was our primary weapon. Now we have a team of them.

Crystal Palace beat Liverpool with the same team that won the FA Cup. What if it evolved?
Oliver Glasner continues to take Crystal Palace to new heights. An FA Cup win in May has been followed by lifting the Community Shield in August. This was the perfect start to their season. Their preparations have not been perfect but they are in a stronger position than this time last year. Their key players in demand this summer — Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta — remain at the club and no first-team players have been sold, although chairman Steve Parish says that Palace may still be forced to cash in on England international Guehi. Advertisement Glasner pointed out in his pre-match press conference that last summer, he lost 40 per cent of his squad only for new signings to come on transfer deadline day, whereas this summer, his group have almost stayed together in their entirety. That pleased him, although the arrival of only two new signings was a source of frustration. He was supported in a decision to take pre-season in Austria rather than a more commercially lucrative tour, and he spoke of how effective that trip was in their build-up to the new campaign. That familiarity between his team, so crucial to how he wants them to play, was apparent at Wembley. In a sense, it was revenge for being denied victory by Liverpool on the final day of the season at Anfield, where they drew 1-1. That day, Glasner was critical of his side but they were much better at Wembley, with their success mostly largely coming through Ismaila Sarr's moments of individual brilliance and those link-ups between players who have developed strong relationships with each other over the past year. Daniel Munoz was frequently in space down the right to play in dangerous crosses to the middle. Tyrick Mitchell was guilty of wasting one good chance which stemmed from it, Will Hughes another, while others failed to gamble. But he also linked well with Sarr ,whose Palace career continues to thrive after a gradual start. Sarr's awareness to draw a foul from Virgil van Dijk for the first equaliser and speed to recover a heavy touch to score Palace's second leveller was surely at least in part due to his confidence and feeling settled with his team-mates. Palace's entire attacking unit thrived in creating opportunities but were let down only by their final decisions or execution. They have achieved unprecedented success against the odds. Their worst start to a Premier League season last time out gave way to a 12th-placed finish and that FA Cup victory. Glasner's ambition has yet to be matched when it comes to transfers. He decried a 'passive' transfer window so far in his pre-match press conference. There is an obvious disparity between his squad and Liverpool's, where two new signings, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, whose initial combined transfer fees totalled almost £100million, scored their goals. Advertisement Palace fielded the same starting XI which won the FA Cup, having signed just two squad players in left wing-back Borna Sosa from Ajax for £2million and goalkeeper Walter Benitez on a free after his PSV Eindhoven contract expired. Chairman Parish is eager to support his manager's ambition but is practising caution with the club's finances. 'People trade players,' he told reporters after the game. 'If you just don't care about tomorrow, you put it all off. We're a fantastic team. If we had four more players, I don't know what we could achieve but it's not as simple as that. We have a lot of outgoings this year because we're paying a lot of transfer fees for players we already have. We'll do whatever we can. 'As far as people being here or not being here, if it's the right decision for the club and for them — nobody can make anyone go — then there will be some changes, but we have to make smart ones.' Just as it did in the few days after the FA Cup victory, a decision made by UEFA looms over them as on Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport is due to rule on their appeal against demotion to the Conference League. It will not sully a hard-fought victory which provides plenty of encouragement for the season if key players are not sold and remain fit, but the mood may nevertheless flip from exuberance to dismay if the decision is not favourable. A European campaign will be positive for the club but the squad still lacks depth. Daichi Kamada will miss the next two games after sustaining an injury in the first half on Sunday, while Guehi was forced off with cramp. Had those been more serious problems then Palace's squad, already struggling for numbers, would look alarmingly thin, particularly if they end up in the Conference League and enjoy a run deep into the competition. Advertisement Palace have an ambitious manager who has transformed the club. Now they are reaping the rewards. But if they are to keep him beyond the end of the season when his contract expires, they will need to adequately support him, rather than giving him a handicap. That is their best route to success. Difficult decisions are required but that comes with the territory, while Parish seems prepared to make them if necessary. Regardless, they go into the new campaign with a sense of hope and belief that they can improve on last season, having beaten the Premier League champions. There can be no doubt that, despite the caveats, they are better placed to do so this time around, even if that is still a low bar to clear.
