CCI playing a key role in ensuring free and fair markets: FM Sitharaman
New Delhi: Ensuring free and fair markets is not merely an economic need but a democratic one and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) plays an important role against this backdrop, to keep the competition alive in the markets, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday.
Addressing the 16th 'Annual Day Celebrations' of the market watchdog here, FM Sitharaman said that competition drives efficiency, nurtures innovation and benefits consumers.
"For innovation, competition acts as a relentless nudge. In a monopolistic environment, there is no urgency to evolve. Whereas with competition, the fear of being outpaced forces organisations to innovate — in technology, in design, in service, in delivery," she told the gathering.
According to the minister, free and fair markets ensure that no single player can corner resources, suppress choice, or distort price discovery.
"This benefits our consumers," she added.
The enactment of the Competition Act in 2002 was a landmark reform in India's journey from a centrally planned regime to a market-driven economy, and the Commission has emerged as a key institution in safeguarding the spirit of liberalisation while checking its excesses.
"The mandate of the CCI under the Competition Act is threefold: To promote and sustain competition in markets, to protect the interests of consumers and ensure freedom of trade, and to prevent practices having an adverse effect on competition," the Finance Minister said.
In today's interconnected and fast-paced global economy, delays in regulatory clearances can lead to uncertainty, disrupt commercial timelines, and potentially erode the intended value of transactions.
"It is, therefore, imperative that regulatory frameworks, while maintaining rigorous oversight, also facilitate swift and seamless approvals for combinations that pose no harm to competition," FM Sitharaman emphasised.
In addition to the traditional challenges, recent years have seen the emergence of new challenges.
Artificial Intelligence technologies raise novel questions about market power, transparency, data access, algorithmic biases, and the scope of competitive harm.
"Free and fair digital markets are challenged by the emergence of gatekeeper platforms, asymmetries in data access and cross-border implications of digital business models. The rise of cross-border digital monopolies demands global cooperation and agile regulation," according to the minister.
India's ongoing structural reforms -- asset monetisation, disinvestment, and digital public infrastructure -- are all geared towards unlocking market potential and deepening competition.
"In this year's Union Budget, I had mentioned the importance of a light-touch regulatory framework based on principles and trust to unleash productivity and employment. In the same vein, regulators must be guided by the principle of 'minimum necessary, maximum feasible' in order to balance regulatory vigilance with a pro-growth mindset," the Finance Minister highlighted.
The government had also announced that the requirements and procedures for speedy approval of company mergers will be rationalised, and the scope for fast-track mergers will also be widened, and the process made simpler.

Kochi: It seems the state's dream of having a semi-high-speed rail line is unlikely to become a reality soon, with neither Centre nor the state govt taking any concrete steps to take any of the two proposals forward. As railways is yet to take a favourable stand on Sreedharan's proposal even after four months, the state govt's special representative in Delhi, K V Thomas, has requested Sreedharan to meet both Vaishnaw and railway officials. However, Sreedharan's stand is that he cannot approach Centre unless the state govt officially entrusts him to do so, demanding that the project proposal be taken up for further action. It seems the state govt is not planning to hold any further discussions with Sreedharan regarding the alternative proposal. The state govt submitted a draft of the semi-high-speed rail line proposal, prepared by Sreedharan, to the Union govt on Feb 10. The alternative proposal was submitted after the railway ministry informed that it could not approve the SilverLine project proposed by K-Rail. "It's been four months since the state govt submitted Sreedharan's proposal to Centre. But during the meeting, the proposal wasn't even mentioned or taken up for discussion. The only way to revive the project now is through pressure from Sreedharan himself. I've requested him to meet Vaishnav or railway officials directly to explain the project's benefits," said Thomas, who was present alongside Vijayan during the meeting with the railway minister. He also expressed unhappiness over Vijayan's recent statement expressing hope over SilverLine. "The chief minister's recent statement that SilverLine will become a reality indicates that the govt is still focused on that project. State govt representatives have not held any discussions with me before or after their recent meeting with the railway minister. I cannot approach Centre directly regarding my proposal unless the state govt officially requests me to take the initiative. If they do, I am ready to hold discussions with Centre," Sreedharan told TOI. Minister V Abdurahman, who is in charge of railways, said the govt was not opposed to considering Sreedharan's proposal. He, however, did not give a clear answer when asked whether the state would request Sreedharan to hold further discussions with Centre. "Kerala is open to implementing either the SilverLine or Sreedharan's alternative project. SilverLine is not a closed chapter," he said.

India and Vietnam on Thursday (June 5, 2025) agreed to step up cooperation in the media and entertainment sector during a meeting held between Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L. Murugan, and a delegation of high-ranking officials from Vietnam. ‘Political class showed mutual understanding': RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat calls for lasting political unity post-Pahalgam attack, warns against forced conversions

'Action was taken after the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam. The valour of our Army shone once again in it. The firmness of the administration was also seen. The political class showed mutual understanding. The society gave the message of unity. This should continue and become a permanent feature,' Bhagwat said, referring to retaliatory actions under , including strikes on terror hubs in Pakistan and PoK. He said the people were angry after the massacre of tourists in Pahalgam on April 22 and wanted justice, which led to the military response. Operation Sindoor marked a significant escalation, with Indian armed forces bombing terror-linked airbases in Pakistan and repelling drone attacks. Bhagwat warned that enemies were engaged in a proxy war against India. 'Those who can't win a direct fight with India want to bleed our country by the policy of a thousand cuts,' he said, invoking Winston Churchill's WWII speech to highlight societal resilience. 'Churchill had said that society was the true lion, and he merely roared on its behalf.' He further called for national unity and restraint, cautioning against provocation and internal conflict. Netam, hailing from Chhattisgarh, echoed these concerns and criticised successive governments for ignoring religious conversions in tribal areas. 'I think RSS is the only institution which can help us in this area,' he said, urging the Sangh to push the central government for a post-Naxalism action plan to prevent recurrence. He also criticised the non-implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 (PESA), saying it was vital for tribal self-governance and community empowerment. Earlier, in an interview with Organiser, Bhagwat had said India must become militarily and economically self-reliant, asserting, 'We have no option but to be powerful as we have been witnessing the wickedness of the evil forces on all our borders.' He emphasised that true strength must be matched with righteousness, or it risks becoming directionless and violent. The RSS chief concluded that unity, moral strength, and readiness are the pillars of a resilient and powerful India. 'Our roots lie in unity, not in division,' he said.
