Belen, Columbus, Carrollton coaches are Dade Track and Field Coaches of the Year

Miami Herald05-06-2025
It had been close to two decades since the Belen Jesuit track and field team had won a state championship.
Longtime rival Columbus hadn't waited nearly as long to win a boys' title, but didn't want to share the crown this time.
And for Carrollton's girls, it was a brand new experience when they stood on the top step of the podium for the first time ever.
The coaches of those three programs all led their respective squads to state championships this season. And so, Belen's Victor Arrieta, Columbus' Danny Areces and Carrollton's Dylan Hermelee are this year's Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Track and Field Coaches of the Year.
Hermelee wins the Girls' Coach of the Year honors after leading Carrollton to its first team state championship.
For Hermelee, it's his second coaching honor within the same school year as he was also the Dade Girls' Cross-Country Coach of the Year this past fall after leading the Cyclones to a fourth-place finish at state.
There was no settling for anything short of first place in track season, and every point was needed.
With a group of nine competitors overall which was led by individual state champions Arianna Garcia and Grace Aldrich, Carrollton edged Montverde Academy by half a point to capture the Class 2A state title.
On the boys' side, Arrieta and Areces split the Boys' Coach of the Year honors.
Arrieta led the Wolverines to their first state championship since 2007 as their squad found the balance needed to edge some of the state's best teams in Class 3A. Arrieta had watched prior Belen teams come close, but just short to a title in recent years as the Wolverines finished second in 2021 and 2023. Belen's distance runners, led by Tiago Socarras and Marcelo Mantecon, propelled the team to the top spot.
A season after sharing the team title, Areces helped guide the Explorers to an outright victory in Class 4A. Columbus' sprinters such as Alec Cruz, Shaddai Carter, Bryce Fitzgerald and Zamarion Lawson, under the guidance of veteran coach James Hardwick, led the way. But the Explorers' depth in the field events with top performers such as javelin state champion Remington Goins made a huge difference.

MLS to allow Palestinian flag for Columbus Crew signing, league-wide ban remains

MLS will allow the display of a Palestinian flag at Columbus Crew home games in support of new signing Wessam Abou Ali but a league-wide ban will remain, according to multiple people briefed on the situation. Abou Ali is of Palestinian descent and represented Denmark, the country of his birth, up to under-20 level before switching allegiance to play for Palestine, for whom he has scored four goals in 10 international appearances, in March 2024. Advertisement The 26-year-old striker was the Crew's marquee signing of the summer, and his arrival preceded the Nordecke, the club's leading supporter group, submitting a request to bring the relevant national flags in support of their players during matches. While the league previously allowed supporters to display any national flag, in October 2023 — following the Hamas attack on Israel — it crafted a new policy that barred the display of national flags that were not previously present at a given stadium on a regular basis. Fans can request exemptions to the policy, and the requests can be forwarded by clubs to the league. Other national flags, such as Mexican or Colombian flags, have often been present at stadiums. But no such exemptions have been granted for Israeli or Palestinian flags except for one, in Philadelphia, where Union supporters are allowed to display the Israeli flag in support of striker Tai Baribo. More broadly, MLS has sought to limit what it considers political displays at games. The league's Fan Code of Conduct forbids 'displaying signs, symbols or images for commercial purposes or for electioneering, campaigning or advocating for or against any candidate, political party, legislative issue, or government action.' Following a request from the Crew on behalf of its Nordecke fan group for supporters to bring national flags representative of all their side's players, MLS has sanctioned the display of one flag from each nationality present — including Palestine — in the Crew's squad in a designated area of their Field stadium. Alongside the Palestinian flag, the flags of Algeria, Argentina, Canada, Cape Verde, Denmark, Finland, France, Ghana, Guatemala, Hungary, Liberia, Nigeria, Ukraine, United States and Uruguay would be present. The league, however, will not sanction fans to bring Palestinian flags to the stadium, with the flag to be provided and installed by the club. Advertisement The proposal from MLS is due to be discussed between the club and the Nordecke on Thursday at a regularly scheduled meeting. 'The Columbus Crew embrace soccer's power to bring together people from all walks of life in our locker rooms, stadium and community,' a Crew spokesperson told The Athletic. Abou Ali played for AaB, Silkeborg and Vendsyssel in Denmark and IK Sirius of Sweden, before a January 2024 move to Egyptian club Al Ahly, for whom he scored 38 goals across 59 first-team appearances, including a hat-trick in the 4-4 draw against FC Porto at this summer's Club World Cup.
