Belen, Columbus, Carrollton coaches are Dade Track and Field Coaches of the Year

Miami Heralda day ago

It had been close to two decades since the Belen Jesuit track and field team had won a state championship.
Longtime rival Columbus hadn't waited nearly as long to win a boys' title, but didn't want to share the crown this time.
And for Carrollton's girls, it was a brand new experience when they stood on the top step of the podium for the first time ever.
The coaches of those three programs all led their respective squads to state championships this season. And so, Belen's Victor Arrieta, Columbus' Danny Areces and Carrollton's Dylan Hermelee are this year's Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Track and Field Coaches of the Year.
Hermelee wins the Girls' Coach of the Year honors after leading Carrollton to its first team state championship.
For Hermelee, it's his second coaching honor within the same school year as he was also the Dade Girls' Cross-Country Coach of the Year this past fall after leading the Cyclones to a fourth-place finish at state.
There was no settling for anything short of first place in track season, and every point was needed.
With a group of nine competitors overall which was led by individual state champions Arianna Garcia and Grace Aldrich, Carrollton edged Montverde Academy by half a point to capture the Class 2A state title.
On the boys' side, Arrieta and Areces split the Boys' Coach of the Year honors.
Arrieta led the Wolverines to their first state championship since 2007 as their squad found the balance needed to edge some of the state's best teams in Class 3A. Arrieta had watched prior Belen teams come close, but just short to a title in recent years as the Wolverines finished second in 2021 and 2023. Belen's distance runners, led by Tiago Socarras and Marcelo Mantecon, propelled the team to the top spot.
A season after sharing the team title, Areces helped guide the Explorers to an outright victory in Class 4A. Columbus' sprinters such as Alec Cruz, Shaddai Carter, Bryce Fitzgerald and Zamarion Lawson, under the guidance of veteran coach James Hardwick, led the way. But the Explorers' depth in the field events with top performers such as javelin state champion Remington Goins made a huge difference.

Sean Monahan wins Masterton Trophy after a season dedicated to Johnny Gaudreau

Sean Monahan's only goal this season, he said in September, was to play in a way that honored the memory of his best friend, Johnny Gaudreau. Monahan and the Columbus Blue Jackets did exactly that despite immeasurable grief, and the hockey world took notice. On Thursday, the NHL announced Monahan as the winner of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which honors the player who 'best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.' The 30-year-old center, a 12-year NHL veteran, embodies all of those traits. Advertisement Marc-Andre Fleury of the Minnesota Wild and Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche were the other finalists for the award, which is voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, including the Columbus chapter, which nominated Monahan. One of the biggest reasons Monahan signed with the Blue Jackets as a free agent last summer was a desire to be reunited with Gaudreau, with whom he played nine seasons on the Calgary Flames. Johnny Gaudreau's wife, Meredith, surprised Sean Monahan with the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. 💙 Watch the #NHLAwards on June 12 at 6p ET on @NHL_On_TNT and @Sportsnet before Game 4 of the #StanleyCup Final. — NHL (@NHL) June 5, 2025 But tragedy struck three weeks before the start of training camp when Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were struck by a car and killed while riding bicycles in Oldmans Township, N.J., approximately 30 minutes south of Philadelphia. 'Life went upside down,' Monahan told The Athletic. Monahan had one of his best seasons in what already had been a stellar career. While centering the Blue Jackets' top line, Monahan had 19 goals and 38 assists in only 54 games, a 1.06 points-per-game rate that was the best of his career. Monahan and the Blue Jackets were enjoying a surprising successful season until a wrist injury on Jan. 7 vs. Pittsburgh forced Monahan to miss 28 games. When he returned to action in late March, the Jackets won nine of their final 13 games, including six in a row to end the season. They finished ninth in the Eastern Conference, narrowly missing the playoffs. Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason said Monahan's presence and play will have benefits well beyond the 2024-25 season. He's been credited with playing a crucial role in the breakout seasons turned in by young standout forwards Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson and Kirill Marchenko. Advertisement But the composure and grace he exuded off the ice was perhaps even more impressive. Monahan spoke openly and emotionally about Gaudreau in almost every road city in the NHL, often taking a deep breath before he started to answer or pausing to gather himself mid-response. In Columbus, he would hold court in front of the locker next to his, where Gaudreau's sweater still hangs. There were some incredible, heartbreaking moments along the way. When the Blue Jackets opened the home season on Oct. 15 vs. Florida, the Blue Jackets took the ice with only two forwards, leaving open a spot on the ice where Gaudreau likely would have aligned beside Monahan. When Monahan 'won' the opening faceoff, he skidded the puck to the vacated space as a sold-out crowd in Nationwide Arena first gasped, then stood and applauded. Several fans were seen crying and hugging each other as the clock froze 13 seconds into the game. Then, on Dec. 3, Monahan stood crying at center ice during a pregame ceremony to honor Gaudreau in Calgary, where his NHL stardom was born. Monahan is the first Blue Jackets player to win the Masterton Trophy. Nick Foligno (2018-19) and Kevin Dineen (2000-01 and 2001-02) were finalists.

Belen Jesuit's Tiago Socarras is the Miami-Dade Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year

Early in his career, Belen Jesuit's Tiago Socarras was more concerned with individual accolades than team accomplishments. But as he progressed through his running career, Socarras became more of a leader while developing into one of the top distance runners in the state of Florida. That's what made his senior season extra special. Not only did Socarras finish his final meet in a Wolverines uniform with a pair of individual state titles, he played a vital role in helping Belen Jesuit secure a long sought after team state championship. Socarras, who is headed to the University of Pennsylvania this fall, is the Miami Herald's Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year for Miami-Dade County. Socarras, a key contributor on the Belen cross-country team in recent years, has been a part of multiple state team titles in that sport. But winning team titles in track and field is less common at Belen. That changed last month when Socarras' victories in the 800 and 1,600 meter races at state helped the Wolverines secure their first state team championship since 2007. 'It was really special and the team title meant even more than any other individual title,' Socarras said. 'The double was pretty special too and the experience was great. It was amazing and the greatest way to cap a high school career.' Socarras ran a time of 1:52.27 to win the 800 meter race at the Class 3A meet. He dominated the event during the season, and ran the fastest time in the state this season in the event in April at the Arcadia Invitational (1:47.66). Socarras won the 1,600 meters earlier in the meet with a time of 4:10.11. His successful track season followed a strong performance in cross-country. At state in November, Socarras finished third individually and ran a season-best time of 15:12 in the 5K race. Next, Socarras will try to carry over what he learned from his experiences at Belen to the track and cross-country programs at Penn while studying finance. 'I'm definitely excited because academically it's an amazing school,' said Socarras, who had previously been recruited by multiple programs including Duke. 'So far in track and field, they haven't done too much, but hoping to go up and change that.'
