The Citizen13-06-2025
THE DA in KZN has called for a probe into the circumstances that led to the light aircraft crash in the Midlands earlier this week.
The tragedy claimed the lives of all three occupants aboard the aircraft.
According to reports, the aircraft disappeared on Sunday, after departing from Virginia Airport in Durban.

On Monday, the Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre confirmed it had located the aircraft crash site.
The DA said it is deeply saddened by the incident and extends heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased.
'The loss of a young student pilot – who was reportedly operating the aircraft – is particularly devastating, as it represents not only the end of a promising future, but also a loss to South Africa's aviation sector,' said the party.

KZN DA Spokesperson on Transport Riona Gokool commended the efforts of all emergency personnel and search and rescue teams who worked tirelessly to locate the missing aircraft.
'Their dedication and professionalism in the face of adversity must be acknowledged and appreciated,' said Gokool.
Gokool added that Transport MEC Siboniso Duma confirmed that the matter will be handed over to the SAPS Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for an official investigation.
'As part of KZN's GPU, the DA is committed to closely monitoring this process. We believe particular attention must be paid to the role that adverse weather conditions, pilot training, flight planning and aircraft condition may have played,' said Gokool.
'The findings of this investigation must inform immediate steps to strengthen aviation safety standards and ensure such tragedies are not repeated.
'As a nation, we must honour the memory of those lost by demanding accountability, learning from this incident, and by putting robust measures in place to protect all who take to our skies,' said Gokool.

Bogus traditional healer sentenced for rape

Bogus traditional healer Bongani Mafolela, accused of rape and attempted rape, was this week sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for two separate offences. Mafolela (24) was convicted and sentenced by the Molopo Regional Court in the North West. ALSO READ: Suspected killer nabbed in eSikhaleni He was given 10 years for the rape he committed in 2022 and five years for the attempted rape he committed in 2024. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) North West Province spokesperson, Sivenathi Gunya, said the court added that both sentences run consecutively, and his name be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders. The court heard that on 6 February 2022, Mafolela met one of the victims in Imperial Reserve, Mafikeng. Claiming to be a traditional healer, he 'prophesied' that she had an evil spirit that needed to be removed and persuaded her to visit his surgery the following day. During the consultation, Mafolela prepared a bath for the victim to 'cleanse' herself. She became suspicious when he refused to leave the room, but complied because she believed she needed help. After the bath, he instructed her to lie on the bed, after which he raped her, warning her not to report it otherwise she might be involved in an accident. In April 2022, after discovering she was pregnant, the victim reported the matter to the police, leading to Mafolela's arrest. He was later released on bail. While out on bail, on 4 September 2024, Mafolela met another victim in Montshioa, Mmabatho. After claiming she had a spiritual calling, he shared a drink with her, which made her feel dizzy and sleepy. While she was lying down, she realised her tracksuit pants had been pulled down and saw Mafolela undressing himself. She resisted and reported the matter to the police, leading to his rearrest the following day. In court, Mafolela pleaded not guilty. Advocate Kefentse Diseko argued that youthfulness should not automatically mitigate sentences in serious offences like rape, and urged the court to consider the alarming prevalence of GBV in South Africa. In delivering judgment, Regional Court Magistrate Mathews found that Mafolela abused cultural beliefs and his position as a traditional healer to exploit his victims. The court further ordered a search and seizure operation at his premises to check for drugs or weapons. Don't have the ZO app? Double standards? Renaldo Gouws on Gayton's K-word 'pass'

Axed DA MP Renaldo Gouws has reacted to news that Gayton McKenzie will not be probed over his old social media posts, which included the K-word, as they did not fall within the timeframe of him being in public office. Last year, the outspoken YouTuber courted controversy over using the racial slur. However, Gouws was shown the door by an internal party committee. Gayton McKenzie's K-word bombshell tweets have led to many political parties calling for his resignation as minister. However, Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo stated that an ethics committee could not probe the posts – dated between 2013 – 2017 – as the Patriotic Alliance leader was not yet an MP at the time. Unlike Renaldo Gouws, Gayton McKenzie's K-word tweet hasn't had any repercussions – for now. Images via X He said: 'In terms of Item 4(2)(a) of the code, read with Item 4(3)(f), conduct committed before a person becomes an MP does not fall within the scope of the code. 'Accordingly, no complaint has been opened by the registrar, and both parties were informed of this in writing earlier today. There is, therefore, no competent complaint before the ethics committee.' Meanwhile, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is set to make a statement on the On social media, many South Africans have questioned how Renaldo Gouws was held accountable for using the K-word, while Gayton McKenzie was not. Setting the record straight, Gouws claimed that the DA took action against him, and not parliament. He posted on X: 'It was the DA that terminated my membership with the party after 13 years due to social media and political pressure. Touching on the YouTube clips in which he said the K-word, he continued: 'The video in question was uploaded in 2010, three years before I joined the DA. The DA was also aware of the video, as I declared it to them. It was considered dealt with as early as 2013. He added: 'Unfortunately, the Federal Executive disagreed with the Federal Legal Commission's (FLC) findings, which stated I should remain as a Member of Parliament. The Fedex decided to overturn the FLC decision. A disgruntled Renaldo Gouws added, 'Almost a year later, and the DA still refuses to share the minutes of that meeting with me so that I can know why they decided to overrule the findings by the FLC. So much for a 'transparent' political party'. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
