Wednesday's briefing: Grealish heads for Merseyside and Guehi could follow

Rangers progressed to the play-off round of the Champions League as Crystal Palace hit out at UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League to the Conference League. One place he wanted to go. 🎯 — Everton (@Everton) August 12, 2025 England winger Jack Grealish spoke of his 'massive' switch to Everton after completing a season-long loan from Manchester City. The 29-year-old has been looking for an exit from Etihad Stadium after making only seven Premier League starts for City last season, seeking regular football ahead of next summer's World Cup. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton – it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said. 'This is a great club, with great fans. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go.' Grealish will wear the number 18 shirt at Everton previously sported by Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne, who he described as 'my two favourite English players'. Liverpool are in talks to sign Crystal Palace's England defender Marc Guehi. The 25-year-old captained the Eagles to victory against Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley and is out of contract next summer. The PA news agency understands the Reds are hopeful Guehi wants to join them but that personal terms have not been agreed. Liverpool – who have signed Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez since winning the Premier League last season – are also understood to be pursuing a deal for 18-year-old Parma centre-back Giovanni Leoni. At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless. The FA Cup winners were demoted to the Conference League by European football's governing body UEFA on July 11 after it determined that, as of March 1, American businessman John Textor had control or influence at both Palace and French club Lyon. Palace appealed, but on Monday the CAS announced the London club had lost their appeal, with Nottingham Forest expected to take the place in UEFA's second-tier competition. A Palace statement read: 'At a time when we should be celebrating our victory in the Community Shield at Wembley, the decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless. 'When we won the FA Cup against Manchester City on that momentous day in May, our manager and players earned the right to play Europa League football. We have been denied that opportunity.' Liverpool transfer news: Alexander Isak saga takes twist as Marc Guehi talks ramp up

Liverpool have spent big in the summer transfer window, but the Premier League champions aren't finished yet with a move for Alexander Isak still in the works Liverpool have been, and will be, the headline acts of the summer transfer window. After winning the Premier League at a canter in his first season, Arne Slot could have been excused for putting his feet up and revelling in his success. ‌ Instead, the Reds have gone about an eye-catching and costly spending spree. Florian Wirtz has already arrived in a club-record £116million deal, while Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have signed for a combined £150m. ‌ But that could just be the prelude to the biggest deal of theirs and any other team's window. The saga surrounding Alexander Isak, shows no signs of slowing down - in fact the opposite is more accurate. The Newcastle striker is doing his best to force through a huge transfer, but the Magpies are so far standing their ground. ‌ Here is the latest on that, and any other transfer stories coming from Anfield… Isak goes nuclear Alexander Isak has told Newcastle he considers his career there over, whether he gets his dream move to Liverpool or not. The Swede has made it clear he wants to pursue new challenges, but thus far has failed to secure an exit. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has him training away from the first-team squad and left him out of last weekend's pre-season double header. And that absence is set to continue, with Isak reportedly unwilling to play for the club again. ‌ There have also been suggestions he has moved out of his rental property in the north east and has no intention of returning. So far, Liverpool have seen one bid of £110m rejected, with Newcastle demanding closer to £150m. Guehi talks ramp up Liverpool are hopeful of completing a deal to sign Marc Guehi after positive initial talks. Crystal Palace are reluctant, but acceptant that they may have to sell their skipper, who has just one year remaining on his deal. Guehi wants to play Champions League football and is keen on the move to Anfield. Mirror Football understands that talks are now officially underway and there is optimism that a deal could be completed. ‌ Palace chairman Steve Parish recently admitted that they may have to sell Guehi, despite winning the FA Cup just three months ago. About cashing in on him this summer, rather than losing him for free, he said: "We'd have to do that, of course. "For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it's a problem for us unfortunately. Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn't afford to lose both. ‌ "We then had another bid [for Guehi] in January but that was a different situation. We'll just have to see what happens. But, you know, it needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind." Elliott open to Leipzig move When it comes to exits, with Dariwn Nunez out the door, Harvey Elliott's is perhaps the big one to watch. Elliott has made it clear that he would like to stay at Anfield for the rest of his career, but with more competition for places he looks likely to move on. Reports from Germany suggest that the player has 'shown encouraging signs' towards a move to RB Leipzig - where he could be reunited with Jurgen Klopp. The 22-year-old is said to be open to the move, but he has plenty of other options and could yet remain in the Premier League.
