Best used cars to buy: Discover which motor will suit YOU best, from a used car expert

The Irish Sun22-05-2025

FROM the most boring family saloon to super exciting single-seat sports cars, I've driven my fair share of cars, and it's helped me to understand some of the things that make a great motor.
In this guide, I've selected some of my favourite used cars.

The criteria include cost, practicality and performance. It's also my personal choice, so feel free to disagree.
Whether you're a single person looking for a performance car, a country dweller looking for wet road traction and action, or a new parent who wants some peace and quiet on the way back from the nursery, we've got you covered.
These cars are the used cars I'd buy (and, in some cases, have owned). Let's start with my top choice of used car in the UK.
What is the best used car to buy?
Practical? Check. Affordable? Check. Reliable? Check. Fashionable? Err, maybe…

Car buying FAQs
Here are some of the most common questions we're asked about buying a used car.
When is best to buy a used car?
When you need one and can afford one! In the end, the market for used cars is, like any market, about supply and demand. You'll find that campervans and convertibles are cheaper in the winter. But not by much.
If you're looking for the
What's the best mileage on a used car?
In the past, high mileage was a huge warning sign. Today, not so much.
What's more important is a full-service history and an understanding of how the miles were driven and by who.
A low-mileage hire car driven (badly) by hundreds of users will be a worse buy than a high-mileage vehicle that's mostly done on long motorway runs.
Ask questions of the dealer, check out the MOT history and (if possible) inspect the car for signs of wear and tear.

BMW 1 Series used cars: I've driven 47 used hatchback cars – this BMW is by far a standout

OK, so 47 is an estimate, but I have driven a lot of hatchbacks, and the BMW Series 1 is a standout. The quintessential hatchback is, of course, the Golf, which in all its incarnations has delivered – but the BMW pips it, and I'll explain why. Advertisement 4 I'd always associated BMWs with committed middle managers driving company cars. A few minutes behind the wheel of the BMW Series 1 M Sport changed all that. I'm not going to say that the VW Golf has had its day (or make a joke that the current version of the car is as unfashionable as the sport, as that would be cruel). But the BMW Series 1 does everything you need a hatch to do – but better than the others. What is a hatchback? A hatchback is a car with a large rear door that opens to create a large boot space. Advertisement READ MORE BUYING USED CARS Hatchback cars are flexible. You can typically carry 4 or more passengers in comfort. When you need extra carrying space, you can lower the back seats. (Make sure the passengers aren't in there first.) The VW Golf pretty much defined what a hatchback is and what it does, and – despite what we've written above – we still love it. Reviewers know it still does the business, but the Golf spawned a whole lot of imitators – some of which are now ready to challenge for the hatchback king's crown. Advertisement Most read in Buy Benefits of a hatchback Small, manoeuvrable, great handling Excellent visibility from the large rear window Sporty looks (especially souped-up variants, including GTI, M Sport, FR, etc.) Versatile, with space for 4 passengers and luggage Fold-down seats provide extra carrying capacity Perfect for families, city drivers or country dwellers BMW 1 Series: An overview When you're buying a hatchback, it's 50% heart and 50% head. It's got to look great and have the speed and performance you want. It's also got to be fuel efficient, reliable and – in these cash-strapped times – affordable. Let's work through the list. The BMW 1 Series looks, to me, fantastic. Looks are personal, so feel free to disagree. Advertisement The M Sport version goes above and beyond with 18' alloys, a rear spoiler and splitters, as well as a full leather interior and a beast of an engine. (Ticks box) It's hard to argue with performance. The majority of modern (post-2019) Series 1s are front-wheel drive with either a 3- or 4-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive makes more space for luggage at the back without impacting the driving experience, which is impeccable. (Ticks box) In-car entertainment and tech is top-notch, as you'd expect on a premium BMW.
