Bulls crush Sharks 64-0 in Currie Cup rout at Loftus
It was a dominant display from start to finish, as the Pretoria side ran in 10 tries and kept the visitors scoreless. The Bulls led 35-0 at halftime and never took their foot off the gas in the second half.
Inside centre Chris Smit, loose forward Jeandre Rudolph, and former Junior Springbok Juann Else each scored two tries, showcasing the Bulls' attacking depth and physicality.
The hosts' forwards laid a strong foundation, allowing the backline to slice through the Sharks' defence with ease. The Durban side, still recovering from a heavy loss to the Lions in the opening round, had no answers for the Bulls' structured, high-tempo game plan.
The emphatic win sees the Bulls top the log with 10 points and a superior points difference after two rounds.
Next up, the Bulls will look to keep their momentum going when they host the Airlink Pumas at Loftus this Saturday.
Scorers
Bulls – Tries: Chris Smit (2), Jeandre Rudolph (2), Juann Else (2), Dylan Smith, Cornel Smit, Stravino Jacobs, JJ Theron. Conversions: Boeta Chamberlain (7).

Sharks XV aim for Currie Cup redemption with Junior Springbok talents
Scrumhalf Bradley Davids will be tasked to steer the attack of the Sharks XV alongside Junior Springbok flyhalf Vusi Moyo when they face the Cheetahs on Saturday in Clermont in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix The Sharks XV reflected deeply on a disappointing week ahead of their third-round Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs in Durban (5.10pm kick-off) on Saturday afternoon. After being walloped 64-0 by the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld this past weekend, the Sharks have set their sights on turning their fortunes around as they continue to invest in young players for the tournament. Despite the heavy defeat, there is still positivity in the camp, and according to head coach JP Pietersen, they've prepared well for the onslaught from their Free State counterparts. 'We are only two games in and there are still a lot more left to play in the competition,' Pietersen said on Thursday. Video Player is loading. Exciting flyhalf Vusi Moyo will partner scrumhalf Bradley Davids in a brand new half-back pairing, while Jaco Williams shifts to fullback. In the midfield and on the wing, Pietersen opted to strengthen the side with more experienced campaigners. 'We spoke honestly on Monday about our performance and how we could fix it,' Pietersen said about their preparation. 'Plum (John Plumtree, Sharks URC head coach) and Neil (Powell, director of rugby) spoke to the boys and told them this is part of the process of what we are doing, and it might not be working now. But it was good for them to speak to the boys.' According to Pietersen, the Cheetahs will be a bit of an unknown factor, especially with their new coaching staff of Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar. The duo is, of course, former teammates of Pietersen at the Boks and Sharks. He said they are preparing for a physical onslaught, and every team will target them in that department because of their youngsters.

The world champions wrapped up their conditioning camp on Thursday as they continue to lay the foundation for the Rugby Championship starting next weekend against Australia at Ellis Park. Loose forward Bathobele Hlekani, winger Cheswill Jooste and Haashim Pead experienced a Bok setup for the first time after being invited by Erasmus to train with the Boks after their exploits at the World Rugby U20 Championship, where they won the title for the first time in 13 years. Rassie Erasmus on the three #JuniorBoks that trained with the #Springboks: 'It was impressive to see their enthusiasm and the way they grabbed the opportunity with both hands' 💚💛#ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) August 7, 2025 Video Player is loading. 'It was rather an opportunity for them to experience how we operate in the team and to expose them to what is required to perform at this level, and they certainly embraced the opportunity. It was good to see how they took the time to understand our structures and how they used this chance to engage with the players on a one-on-one basis. 'They all have bright futures, and we hope the experience they gained and the lessons learned will set them in good standing, as they look to further develop their careers and strive to reach this level in the coming years.' Listen to Felix getting involved 😤🔊 Getting the ball off Bathobele Hlekani is no simple task 😂👇#SSRugby — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) July 31, 2025 Pead grabbed the eye at the U20 with his explosive performances behind the pack. Jooste impressed with his silky side-stepping and the pace with which he beat multiple defenders. Hlekani's physical presence gave the Baby Boks impetus on the defence and when the forwards carried the ball up into contact. In a clip from the recent Bok camp training, he showed his power by fighting off multiple World Cup winners and his junior colleagues when they tried to take the ball from him in a simulated contact session. Jooste, who played SA U18 last year, described it as an incredible experience. 'It was particularly memorable for me to be inspired and motivated by the players I look up to and who are already where I'd like to be. They didn't only share their knowledge, but also their energy and spirit of unity.'

Rassie sings praises of young guns as Boks wrap up training camp
The reigning world champions will next turn their attention to the Wallabies, who they face in their competition opener next weekend. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus was full of praise for the three U20 stars who participated in the reigning world champions' two-week training camp in Joburg. Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste, and Haashim Pead, who were all part of the World Rugby U20 Championship-winning Junior Springboks team from just a few weeks ago, were invited to train with the senior team for the last two weeks. The Boks wrapped up their training camp on Thursday, ahead of the 2025 Rugby Championship which gets under way next weekend, with Erasmus' team hosting the Australian Wallabies at Ellis Park. The teams will meet again a week later in Cape Town. The Boks are the defending champions. 'Experience how we operate' 'It was fantastic to have Bathobele, Cheswill, and Haashim with us, and it was impressive to see their enthusiasm and the way they grabbed the opportunity with both hands on and off the field,' said Erasmus. 'We were very pleased with the way they slotted into the training sessions and used the time to interact with the Springbok players and learn from them, even though we made it clear that there was no pressure on them to grasp all our structures and systems. 'It was rather an opportunity for them to experience how we operate in the team and to expose them to what is required to perform at this level, and they certainly embraced the opportunity.' The three U20 players will now return to their respective unions and be available for Currie Cup duty. The Boks will continue their Rugby Championship preparations from Monday where their attention will be more specifically focused on the Wallabies. 'Amazing' to train with the Boks Jooste said it was a privilege to have been able to train alongside the world champions. 'The past two weeks with the Boks have been incredible,' said Jooste. 'As a Junior Bok, it was a privilege to be among the best, and although it was tough, I learned a lot. I walk away with new insights, more confidence and an even greater hunger to grow.' Pead, who was in his second season with the Junior Boks this year, said the experience had been 'amazing' while Hlekani said he was able to improve the techniques he was lacking in. 'I've learnt valuable lessons, and the experience I gained will truly go a long way,' said Pead, who was second on the list of top try scorers at the World Rugby U20 Championship. Hlekani added: 'I'll definitely take what I learned and use it to improve my game, and hopefully we'll get another opportunity like this in future. I'm going to keep pushing, stay hungry, and hopefully one day I'll be part of this squad.'
