Lana Del Rey Vs. Ethel Cain—The Feud, Explained
Lana Del Rey's latest song has been interpreted by fans as a diss against Ethel Cain, sparking rumors of a feud between the two singers.
On August 13, Lana Del Rey posted an Instagram reel captioned 'Track 13,' featuring a sample of her unreleased song, which contains the line, 'Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, reenacting my Chicago pose.'
Del Rey also mentions 'The most famous girl in the Waffle House,' which appears to be a reference to a 2022 New York Times profile of Cain titled 'The Most Famous Girl in the Waffle House.'
The song instantly sparked rumors of a feud between the two singers—fans reckoned that Del Rey's vague lyrics had something to do with Cain's friendship with Del Rey's ex, Salem musician Jack Donoghue.
Del Rey and Cain both posted photos posing with Donoghue in 2022, with the former posing in front of a prison in Chicago, which seems to explain the accusation against Cain 'reenacting my Chicago pose.'
Meanwhile, Swifties were under the impression that Del Rey was actually beefing with Taylor Swift, because her song sample was posted on the same day that Swift unveiled her upcoming album, 'The Life of a Showgirl.'
Swifties, who are used to decoding hidden messages from their favorite pop star, reckoned that Del Rey labeling her song 'Track 13' and posting it on August 13 was a reference to Swift's lucky number, which is 13.
However, Swifties seem to have misread the tea leaves, as Del Rey soon elaborated, rather bafflingly, in the comments section of a Pop Base Instagram post, clarifying that she had an issue with Cain.
'I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at,' Del Rey wrote.
'Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.'
Del Rey's claim about Cain comparing her to cartoon characters inspired fans to search the web for evidence, and several screenshots of bizarre posts featuring Family Guy's Peter Griffin have surfaced.
None have been confirmed as coming from Cain, so the story is still murky.
Cain then posted an Instagram story claiming that Del Rey had blocked her on Instagram. Ethel Cain And Lana Del Rey Fans Fight On Social Media
Fans of the feuding singers started attacking each other all across social media, and the beef quickly got heated.
Nicki Minaj seemed to be on team Del Rey, writing that she had 'been singing 'Ethel cain hated my instagram post' all morning,' but admitted that she had no idea who Cain was.
Azealia Banks, a hardened veteran of many, many online feuds, reckoned that Del Rey fans were being transphobic (as Ethel Cain is a trans woman), while others saw both camps as punching down.
Of course, fans also posted jokes and memes, with most seeming to enjoy the drama.
Some delighted in explaining the feud to their boyfriends.
Obviously, many made comparisons to the infamous Kendrick vs. Drake feud.
Del Rey and Cain have been compared to each other for several years, as both create melancholic melodies and nostalgic, Americana-laced music videos, but Cain doesn't seem to see any resemblance.
Cain has repeatedly pushed back against the comparison, describing Del Rey's image as the 'peak opulence of the American Dream,' and her own art as representative of America's working class, the 'people who are constantly spat on.'
'For me, the American Dream is not real,' Cain told Hero Magazine. 'And if it is, it's built on the backs of all the people who never see any profit.'
Fans are waiting to see if Cain will deliver a response—perhaps she's already in the recording studio. Rock icon plans to skip Hall of Fame ceremony, 'we have a gig'
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees of 2025 boast names such as The White Stripes, Soundgarden, Outkast, and Cyndi Lauper. Some of these names or remaining representatives for the bands will be in attendance for the celebration on Nov. 8 in Los Angeles. Chubby Checker appears not to be one of them. Checker, 83, rock n' roll pioneer and most famous for his 1960 cover of Hank Ballard & The Midnighters' R&B song 'The Twist,' initially appeared excited to be inducted into the hallowed hall after making a demand in 2014 to be included. In a clip circulating on Bluesky, the musician is seen speaking after a show and states that he will not be attending the ceremony. The reason is that the musician is booked for a show on the night of the induction. 'I told my manager, I says, 'Make sure when we go to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, the induction, that I'm doing what I love doing the most: being in front of an audience,'' said Checker. 'A live audience, not a television audience. So she said, 'Let me just get it for you now, so if it happens.' So she did, she got me a show. And the Rock Hall says, 'We want you to come here this day and be here.' We said, 'We're not coming.' 'You're what?!' I said, 'We're not coming. We have a gig.' 'Well, forget about your gig.' You never forget about gigs.' It's not clear if Checker got the nod to perform at the Hall of Fame ceremony, but it's possible the singer was told that younger artists would be performing his music instead. Checker once took out a full-page ad in Billboard in 2001, stating the case that he is one of rock and roll's most under-appreciated figures and demanded inclusion in the Hall of Fame. Checker won't be the only one not attending the ceremony. Bassist Carol Kaye also stated she will not be attending either. Related coverage: Rock legends finally settle legal dispute. Hall and Oates settle legal dispute. Will they ever reunite?
Hall and Oates may never be an active musical entity again, but at least the rather strained partnership at least have come to a legal resolution. Daryl Hall and John Oates ended their dispute over their business partnership through arbitration, according to the Associated Press. There are no current details on what the resolution entails or the terms agreed to by both parties. In November 2023, Daryl Hall filed suit against John Oates with the claim that Oates was attempting to sell his share of their joint venture, Whole Oats Enterprises LLP, to music publishing company, Primary Wave IP Investment Management LLC. The company already had a significant interest in the duo's music catalog. Hall's declaration filed in the Nashville Chancery Court, as obtained by Rolling Stone, stated he felt Oates was committing the 'ultimate partnership betrayal' and claimed his former songwriter partner only gave him a two-day notice of the sale before he was due to hold out on tour. John Oates filed his own declaration stating he was 'tremendously disappointed' by Hall's statements. 'I have no idea who or what is motivating Daryl to take these steps and make such salacious statements, but I am deeply hurt,' Oates wrote. He said over the last 50 years, he has devoted himself to ensuring that fans and the music industry 'perceive the Hall & Oates music and brand in the most positive light.' A formidable musical duo who created hits throughout the late 1970s and 1980s together, such as 'Maneater' and 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do),' seems to be all put to rest despite the resolution. In an interview in February with The Times, Hall pretty much put an end to hopes of reconciliation with his former musician partner. 'That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,' Hall said. 'I've had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I'm kind of used to it.' Related coverage: Christian music singer accused of rape in latest allegations.
