Rohit Sharma recalls India's batting collapse in T20 World Cup 2024: Was panicking… wasn't comfortable

Indian Express26-06-2025
India broke the ICC trophy drought in 2024 when they won the T20 World Cup after 13 years. However, the game was not smooth sailing against South Africa. Both teams going into the game were unbeaten and fought tooth and nail in Barbados. India did manage to lose three early wickets in the powerplay and was in a bit of a pickle.
'I was panicking. I wasn't comfortable. I thought we'd let them into the game. Of course, in the back of my mind, I always believed our lower middle order, although it hadn't batted much during the tournament, had made an impact whenever given the opportunity,' said Rohit Sharma, speaking to Jiostar.
'Not many people are talking about Axar's knock, but it was the game-changer. Scoring 47 off 31 at that stage was vital. And we needed one player to bat through the innings, Virat did that brilliantly,' added Rohit.
It would be a partnership between Axar and Virat Kohli that would steady the ship initially for India and help to put on a score of 176/7.
Kohli, going into the game, was in a lean patch; however, in the final, he pulled off a 59-ball 76 run innings. 'If you hit three boundaries in the first over, then you've started well. That's what every cricketer wants. The experience of playing for India for so many years helps. You can control your emotions, control your thoughts, and stay in the moment. I'm sure he was thinking the same: 'Today is the day I need to be focused.' Not worrying about what happened before. And he played a brilliant innings, a fantastic partnership with Axar,' said Rohit Sharma
In the chase, South Africa at one point did look like they would get there; however, Jasprit Bumrah's two overs changed the tide in the contest, and Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning catch of David Miller in the final to ensure India got over the line.

It Was Nerve-Wracking When...: Glenn Maxwell Makes Honest Admission After His Match-Winning Knock Against South Africa

Star Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell made honest admission after playing an impressive match-winning knock in the third and final T20I against South Africa at Cazaly's Stadium, Cairns on Saturday. Chasing 173 for victory, Australia were in deep trouble at 122/6, before Maxwell took charge and produced another piece of run-chasing brilliance. The big-hitting Aussie star played an unbeaten knock (62 off 36 balls) with the help of eight fours and two sixes at a strike-rate of 172.22. As the equation came down to four required from two balls, Maxwell finished the job with a trademark reverse sweep six off the match's penultimate ball and guided Australia to a series victory. After his match-winning knock, the 36-year-old said that it was nerve-wracking in the middle when Australia lost a couple of wickets in a row. "It was nerve-wracking when we lost a couple of wickets in a row. Corbin Bosch bowled a brilliant over. To keep the run-rate near 9 or 10, we were down to two wickets, I had to keep the majority of the strike," said Maxwell in the post-match presentation. "Nice to get a couple out of the middle right at the end. I just stay calm, watch the ball, try and not preempt too much, understand the areas where I can get the boundaries and where I can get the twos. Just tried to stay on strike as much as possible," he added. The veteran all-rounder mentioned that the series win against South Africa is a confidence booster for Australia before the 2026 T20 World Cup. "We've had a great run with this T20 group. To have another series win against a quality opposition in South African is great for our confidence heading forward. There's still about 13-14 internationals before the T20 World Cup and we are building something really nice in this group. It's certainly a very fun change room to be in and I am enjoying every moment," said Maxwell. "Without Maxi playing a blinder inning tonight, I wouldn't have been standing here. There's been contributions from everyone in this series. We've had so much fun, we had a great time playing up in the northern Australia. Let's see what happens in the future," said David. Speaking about his own batting form, David said," Just enjoying going out there and competing. Keeping it really simple and not trying too hard. Form comes and goes but I feel like the lot of work I have been doing, it's been contributing to success for this team. We have got so many different people who can contribute, so I'm happy to be part of that at the moment.

Jasprit Bumrah confirms availability for Asia Cup 2025 to Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee: Report

Bumrah's workload and fitness has been widely discussed of late after the star pacer skipped two matches in the five-Test series in England recently. The 31-year-old speedster, however, isn't likely to face fitness issues by bowling a maximum of four overs in the Asia Cup, which returns to the T20 format this year. In a massive boost for the Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup, premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah has conveyed his availability to the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for the continental event that takes place in the T20 format in the UAE next month. According to a report on The Indian Express, the 31-year-old pace spearhead had spoken to the selectors a few days ago, confirming that he has no fitness issues at the moment and is raring to go at the event, where the Men in Blue could face arch-rivals Pakistan thrice including in the final. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,' a source was quoted by the newspaper as saying. Bumrah could be donning the iconic blue jersey after more than a year Bumrah has not represented India in white-ball cricket since starring in the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team's triumph in last year's T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean. The Mumbai Indians pacer had collected 2/18 in the final against South Africa as the Men in Blue snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. There has been plenty of discussion regarding Bumrah's fitness and workload after the pacer skipped two matches in the five-Test series against England recently, including the final Test at The Oval with the series on the line. The Indian team, after all, has been advised to carefully manage Bumrah's workload after a back injury in January had sidelined him for four months. However, given the fact that Bumrah will be bowling a maximum of four overs, as well as the fact that the Men in Blue will have three to four days off between games in the group stage, workload and fitness should not be an issue for him in the upcoming event.

Drama in Pakistan cricket continues as players reportedly face pay cut after ODI series loss in West Indies

The Pakistan cricket team has been facing a barrage of criticism after suffering their first ODI series defeat against West Indies in over three decades with a 202-run thrashing earlier this week. Senior members of the Pakistan cricket team including Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan had pressurised the PCB to include 3 per cent of their ICC revenue share in player contracts. Reuters The Pakistan cricket team has been facing a barrage of criticism after suffering their first ODI series loss against West Indies in 34 years, with Mohammad Rizwan's men capitulating to a 202-run defeat after getting bundled out for a lowly 92. Not only has the lopsided loss put seniors including 50-over captain Rizwan and Babar Azam in the spotlight, newly-appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has also been targeted with some questioning his credentials. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Babar, Rizwan and others could lose part of their wages As if the criticism isn't enough, there's more trouble in store for Babar and Rizwan and others as they face a pay cut in the aftermath of Pakistan's poor run this year. The Men in Green had, after all, crashed out of the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year without a single win and winning just one out of three Tests this year. According to a report on Cricket Pakistan, the Mohsin Naqvi-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to remove the clause from the players' central contract which includes 3 per cent of the revenue that the board gets from the International Cricket Council. The senior players had pressurised the board to distribute 3 per cent of their earnings from the ICC among the players two years ago. And the manner in which the Pakistanis have struggled to make an impact across formats in recent months, it is likely that the board might remove the clause for good. Pakistan have been performing relatively better in the T20I format under Salman Agha's leadership, having won the 20-over leg of their tour of the Caribbean 2-1. Agha had been named 20-over skipper in March during the tour of New Zealand, with Pakistan winning nine and losing as many in the format since then. The spin-bowling all-rounder will be hoping to lead Pakistan to victory in the upcoming Asia Cup, which returns to the T20 format in the UAE next month, in order to boost his chances of being named captain across formats – replacing Shan Masood and Rizwan in Tests and ODIs respectively.
