Why Are Axar Patel And Yuzvendra Chahal Not Playing Today's PBKS Vs DC Match?
Last Updated: Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel misses his second consecutive IPL 2025 match due to illness, with Faf du Plessis captaining against Punjab Kings. Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Axar Patel is missing a second consecutive match in IPL 2025, with Faf du Plessis captaining the team against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Saturday (May 24). Axar has been said to be dealing with illness in the last few days and was also unavailable from the team's match against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 21. On the eve of the match, assistant coach Matthew Mott had said he didn't know whether Axar would be available to play but mentioned that the all-rounder had not trained. 'The honest answer is I don't fully know," Mott told the media. 'He's not training today. But, we'll find out when we get back there today. Obviously, he wasn't well the other day. He's had a pretty rugged time with a few different little niggle and injuries. I'm sure he's motivated to come out and play, but we'll probably know a little bit more tonight when we go back and see the medical stuff." advetisement After the loss against MI, which ended DC's hopes of qualifying for the playoffs, du Plessis emphasised that Axar had been 'very, very sick'. He also rued his absence in a match where MI's left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner bowled a winning spell of 3/11. 'Yeah, I think especially [missed] Axar on a wicket like that," du Plessis said after the match. 'If you look at the way that Mitch Santner bowled, they're very similar bowlers. To bowl four overs, I think [Santner] only went for ten runs. Axar is that kind of class bowler, international, proven left-arm spinner that on a wicket like that, he would love to bowl in it. But unfortunately, he was very, very sick the last two days." In Axar's absence, Kuldeep Yadav and all-rounder Vipraj Nigam will have to shoulder the responsibility of spin. Meanwhile, PBKS are also missing leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Shreyas Iyer didn't mention any reason for his absence during the toss. The same goes for DC's Abhishek Porel. Will Axar Patel be available for Delhi Capitals' last game? ‘Honest answer, I don't know,' says Matthew Mott
Delhi Capitals Assistant coach Matthew Mott said Axar Patel's availability for the side's last game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season is unknown, with the captain missing a crucial game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. Axar's absence was keenly felt on a turning pitch where his MI equivalent Mitch Santner turned up with a match-winning spell to end DC's playoff hopes. Talking about Axar Patel's availability, the 51-year-old said, 'The honest answer is I don't fully know. He's not training today. But, we'll find out when we get back there today. Obviously, he wasn't well the other day. He's had a pretty rugged time with a few different little niggle and injuries. I'm sure he's motivated to come out and play, but we'll probably know a little bit more tonight when we go back and see the medical stuff.' Captaining in Axar's absence, former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis was left rue to the absence of their regular skipper as DC lost convincingly in a must-win match to keep their playoffs hope alive. At the toss, du Plessis had said that missing Axar is the equivalent of missing two players in the side. 'Yeah, I think especially [missed] Axar on a wicket like that,' du Plessis said after the match. 'If you look at the way that Mitch Santner bowled, they're very similar bowlers. To bowl four overs, I think [Santner] only went for ten runs. Axar is that kind of class bowler, international, proven left-arm spinner that on a wicket like that, he would love to bowl in it. But unfortunately, he was very, very sick the last two days.' Delhi Capitals will look to conclude IPL 2025 on a winning note as they take on Punjab Kings in their last match of the season at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Saturday. Reflecting on the campaign, Mott said: 'There's still plenty of motivation (to play this last game). Yes, we had a disappointing end to what was an encouraging campaign. We obviously came out of the box in the early stage, won a lot of games early, but the second half has been patchy. So, I think it's an opportunity for us to sign off on a positive note.'

PBKS vs DC, IPL 2025: Delhi Capitals to wait on skipper Axar Patel's recovery
Delhi Capitals (DC) will have to wait on skipper Axar Patel's recovery from illness ahead of the IPL 2025 encounter against the Punjab Kings, said assistant coach Matthew Mott. Axar missed the side's 59-run loss to the Mumbai Indians, which ended DC's hopes of making the top four, and has not fully recovered ahead of Saturday's contest here. 'He's [Axar] is not training today. He's had a pretty rugged time with a few niggly injuries as well. I'm sure he's motivated to come out and play. But, we'll probably know a little bit more tonight when we go back and see the medical staff,' Mott said at the pre-match press conference. The Australian coach said that the players and staff are gutted at not being able to qualify for the Playoffs despite winning six of their opening eight encounters. ALSO READ | 'No need to disrespect anyone' - Digvesh Rathi's coach on ward's skirmishes in IPL 2025 'We came out of the blocks hard and won a lot of games early. The second half has been very disappointing, a bit patchy and disjointed,' the coach said. 'As a unit, it's hard not to sit back and think what could have been. Halfway through the tournament, we probably needed to win two more games to assure our spot in the final. We weren't good enough as a group to do that,' he added. Despite failing to make the Playoffs, Mott suggested that there were plenty of positives to take home for the Capitals, especially the performances of the uncapped Indian players. 'The players who have read the conditions the best have genuinely won matches for their teams. I think the local players understand the conditions a bit more,' Mott said. 'Someone like Vippy [Vipraj Nigam] came in under the radar this year. Right from the first match he's played pivotal innings with the bat, and he's been entrusted with big overs. Sameer [Rizvi] looked really good in the last game. Abishek [Porel] throughout has played some really good counter-punching knocks,' he explained. Despite the PBKS encounter proving to be a dead rubber, the coach suggested that it gives the team the chance to finish on a high. 'I think it's an opportunity for us to sign off for the Delhi fans more than anything. Don't forget us, we're still a good team. Hopefully, a good performance tomorrow shows that and gives us something going into the next year,' he concluded.

Delhi Capitals set unwanted IPL history as Mumbai Indians enter playoffs
Delhi Capitals became the first team in Indian Premier League history to miss the playoffs after winning their first four matches of a season. Their crushing 59-run defeat against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday confirmed their exit, as MI sealed the fourth and final playoff spot in IPL 2025. Delhi, captained by stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis due to regular captain Axar Patel 's illness, were bowled out for 121 in response to Mumbai's 180. Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner led MI's attack, picking up three wickets each to dismantle the Delhi line-up. With this victory, Mumbai climbed to 16 points and secured fourth place. Delhi remained on 13 points with just one game left, effectively ruling them out of contention. The defeat marked a new low for Delhi, who began the season with high expectations after notching up four successive wins. At the halfway stage, they had six victories from eight games and looked on course for a top-four finish. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo But a collapse in the second half of the season saw them lose four matches and register one no-result. That downturn not only cost them a playoff spot but also handed them a record they will want to forget. The latest loss was also Delhi's 21st against Mumbai in IPL history — their worst record against any team and the joint second-highest number of defeats by one team to another in the tournament's history. Only one head-to-head has seen more wins: Mumbai's 24 victories over Kolkata Knight Riders . Live Events The full list of most wins against a single team in the IPL includes MI's 24 over KKR, 21 each for CSK over RCB, KKR over PBKS, MI over CSK, and now MI over DC. Faf du Plessis remained composed after the loss. 'We were excellent in the field and with the ball for 17-18 overs. But those final two overs shifted the momentum completely,' he said. He also spoke about the absence of key players. 'Axar was too ill to play, and Starc opted out. On a pitch like this, having Axar's left-arm spin would've been gold.' As Mumbai celebrated their spot in the playoffs, Delhi were left to ponder a campaign that began brightly but unravelled just when it mattered most — underlining once again how crucial momentum is in the IPL.
