Not Virat Kohli Or Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma Credits This India Star For T20 World Cup Win
India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma relived the T20 World Cup 2024 win under his captaincy. He spoke high about how the game was once going out of their hands but then they pulled it back. In a thrilling finale at Barbados, India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 title by defeating South Africa by seven runs. For most of the match, the Proteas had the upper hand, especially when they needed just 30 runs off the final 30 balls, with big hitters Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller at the crease. But it was the brilliance of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya in the death overs that turned the tide in India's favor, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Earlier, India faced early trouble while batting first. A top-order collapse put them on the back foot, but Virat Kohli and Axar Patel stepped up to steady the innings. Kohli anchored the innings with a 76-run knock off 59 deliveries, his slow strike rate did raise some eyebrows but his presence at the crease helped keep the scoreboard moving. Axar's 47 off 31 balls came at a crucial time, lifting India's spirits and giving them hope. Shivam Dube also chipped in with a quickfire 27 off 16, pushing India's total to a competitive 176.
A year after that iconic win, captain Rohit Sharma opened up about what went on behind the scenes during that high-pressure final. Speaking to Star Sports, he revealed how tense things were in the dressing room after the early wickets fell and credited the Kohli-Axar partnership for shifting the momentum.
'I'm sure he (Kohli) was thinking the same: 'Today is the day I need to be focused.' Not worrying about what happened before. And he played a brilliant innings—a fantastic partnership with Axar. After losing those three wickets up front, there were obviously a lot of nerves in the dressing room. I was panicking. I wasn't comfortable,' Rohit said.
He also gave special praise to Axar Patel for a knock that hasn't received enough attention.
'Not many people are talking about Axar's knock, but it was the game-changer. Scoring 47 off 31 at that stage was vital. And we needed one player to bat through the innings—Virat did that brilliantly. Then we had Shivam, Axar, and Hardik, who came in and played their parts,' he added.
In the second innings, India's bowlers had to dig deep as South Africa looked poised for victory. But a remarkable fightback led by Bumrah and Pandya sealed the win and ended India's 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.
Looking back at that unforgettable night, Rohit couldn't hide his emotions.
'It was by far the best moment of my life, of my cricketing career to lift the trophy. It meant so much to all of us, to that group. We'd experienced the heartbreak of coming so close and falling short. That's why it was special. We planned meticulously. We worked hard every single day, constantly thinking about how to win the World Cup. That's why every player's emotions came pouring out on that day,' he said

In Pics: 15 years of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's magical friendship on and off cricket pitch
When Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli first took the field in 2008, they could not have imagined a partnership stretching nearly two decades. They've played over 200 matches together, led India through World Cups, and been at the center of endless public speculation. Years of shared leadership in Team India and the IPL created a natural rapport between the two, and they have honed an uncanny ability to read each other's game. While there are fireworks during matchups, it's the private exchanges—pep talks, shared smiles, and a laugh after a slip—that reveal the true Ro-Ko essence. Ro-Ko have their gut feelers aligned When Rohit and Virat talk tactics, things move fast. 'We'd end up on the same page in terms of what the gut feel of that particular situation was,' Kohli told RCB media ahead of the April 2025 MI vs RCB match, as reported by The Indian Express. One moment, they debate whether to up the run rate; the next, they are in perfect sync. That instinctive understanding helped co-steer India through several high-pressure tournaments, including a Champions Trophy win in 2013, the 2017 World Cup final, and the crowning achievement: the 2024 T20 World Cup victory. Either way, they know what to do—often before anyone else spots the play. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's life beyond the cricket stadium Their relationship extends well past the dugouts and the dressing rooms. After all, one of their most iconic moments came after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, when the two veterans embraced in tears. It wasn't staged. It was the release of 15 years of expectations, setbacks, and finally, shared glory. Even in defeat, they stand united: Kohli came to Rohit's defense after India's 2021 T20 World Cup exit, insisting one fallen player should not have to take the blame for a collective setback, as per The Times of India. 'A team loss can't be pinned on one player,' Kohli said in Rohit's defense. From 'learning from each other' to a historic fourth title together In April 2025, as the Mumbai Indians faced the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Wankhede, Kohli talked about his relationship with Rohit. "I think it's a very natural thing to take place when you play with someone for so long and you share so much of your insight of the game initially, you're learning from each other, you're kind of growing in your careers at probably the same time, and you share all kind of queries and questions." Outside stadiums, they celebrate birthdays, share family milestones, and swap life hacks. On the field, they break records. As reported by Mint, Kohli and Sharma added another jewel to their legacy with India's 2025 ICC Champions Trophy win. Rohit led the team to victory with a brisk fifty in the final against New Zealand. Kohli, despite scoring just one run in the final, was instrumental throughout the tournament: his 217 runs in four matches included a century against Pakistan and a semi-final fifty against Australia. Both players now hold four ICC titles each, surpassing MS Dhoni's record and becoming the most decorated Indian cricketers in ICC events.

India tour of England 2025: Jofra Archer should not be rushed back to play second Test, says Vaughan
Injury-prone Jofra Archer should not be rushed back to play in England's second Test against India at Edgbaston despite the pace bowler's recent comeback to red-ball cricket, feels former captain Michael Vaughan. Archer played in his first First-Class match in four years during Sussex's County Championship game against Durham at Chester-le-Street on Sunday and took one wicket for 32 from 18 overs. The 30-year-old has not featured in a Test since 2021. England selector Luke Wright said earlier this month that if Archer comes through the four-day game for Sussex, he could be available for the second Test, which starts on July 2. But, Vaughan feels otherwise, preferring Archer to play another four-day game. 'The good thing is that Jofra is back in the equation—but I'd like to see him play another four-day game,' said Vaughan on BBC Test Match Special. 'He's not played the longer format for four years so why, on the back of one game for Sussex against Durham, would you rush him back? We know the intensity at Test-match level is so different to county cricket. Let him play another four-day game—I would go with the same lineup, as long as the bowlers are fine and there are no niggles.' Archer finished with figures of one for 32 from 18 overs in Durham's first innings, his sole wicket being that of opener Emilio Gay, but Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace also urged England to 'be careful' with the pacer. 'If I was in their (selectors') situation, my honest answer would be that I would save him (Archer) for the third Test match. You have to be careful that he's only bowled 18 overs of red-ball cricket,' Farbrace was quoted as saying in The Guardian. 'Why change the team? They've just won the Test at Headingley. They've set themselves up nicely for the series. I would be definitely sticking with Chris Woakes for Edgbaston because he knows the pitch inside out,' the former England assistant coach said. Farbrace will, however, report that Archer 'looks in great rhythm, he bowled very nicely'. '(But) Rather than playing back-to-back games and then straight into a Test match, probably the best scenario would be to not play in our game but then be ready for the third Test match. But that's their call,' he added. Archer emerged as one of England's most exciting prospects in 2019 when he bowled the decisive Super Over in the home World Cup win, before taking 22 wickets in four Tests in the Ashes series that followed. But since then he has been plagued by injury—an elbow issue that first surfaced in 2020 needed several surgeries and he also had a stress fracture of the back in 2022. As a result, Archer's frequent attempts to return to international cricket have been stop-start. He was expected to play in the white-ball series against West Indies but hurt his thumb while playing in the Indian Premier League.

Jofra Archer back in England Test squad against India after four-year absence
Paceman Jofra Archer has been named in England's squad for the second Test against India after an absence of more than four years. The 30-year old fast bowler, hampered by injuries during his career, has played just 13 Tests and none since February 2021. His most recent match for England was in March against South Africa in a one-day international at the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo Archer returned to first-class action for his English county team Sussex for the first time in four years on Sunday, taking a single wicket in the drawn match against Durham. He admitted returning to red-ball cricket was a mental challenge but said he was ready for Test cricket. Live Events "Yeah. I guess so," he told the BBC. "I just want to get through the game. I'm glad I've finished a day of four-day cricket." Ben Stokes 's team secured a thrilling five-wicket win on Tuesday in the series opener against India at Headingley. Archer's addition on Thursday was the only change to the squad for next week's second Test in Birmingham. The Barbados-born player burst onto the scene in 2019, hailed as a key weapon for England in their search for genuine pace to unsettle opponents. He bowled the decisive super over in England's World Cup win over New Zealand at Lord's in 2019 and took 22 wickets in four Tests that followed against Australia in the drawn Ashes series. But Archer was dogged by an elbow injury first sustained in 2020 that required multiple operations and had to work his way back from a recurring stress fracture in his back, first sustained in 2022. He was ruled out of England's recent ODI series against the West Indies with a thumb injury sustained while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. Archer has taken 42 Test wickets in his 13 Tests at an average of 31. Warwickshire batter Jacob Bethell and bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who did not feature at Headingley, have retained their places in the squad for the second Test, which starts at Edgbaston on July 2.
