In-form Aston Villa close on Champions League return with Tottenham victory
Villa's memorable run to the quarter-finals of this season's competition gave them the taste for more and they boosted their hopes with an eighth win from their last nine Premier League games.
This was probably the biggest home banker of the campaign given where Spurs' focus lay, but Villa made hard work of it, needing second-half goals from Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara to get the job done.

However, Chelsea's win over Manchester United later on Friday night means they have to win their final game of the season at Old Trafford and hope other teams, including Enzo Maresca's side and Manchester City, drop points.
Spurs could yet still be in the Champions League next season as well if they can end their trophy drought with Europa League victory over United and boss Ange Postecoglou did nothing to jeopardise that at Villa Park.
The embattled Australian made it clear where his focus was by naming a weakened side, which included a first Premier League start since 2022 for forgotten man Sergio Reguilon.
They never really looked like avoiding a 21st league defeat of a miserable league season, but all roads now lead to Bilbao where history could beckon.
Villa had an early flurry of chances as Ollie Watkins fired straight at Antonin Kinsky and John McGinn fizzed an effort just over.
But Spurs, and Son Heung-min in particular, showed – for a time at least – they were not here just to make the numbers up.
The South Korean is one of the players who is likely to play in Bilbao and he almost opened the scoring when he cut inside and whipped an effort just over the crossbar.
Son was again involved as Spurs went close once more, starting a move that saw Wilson Odobert cleverly flick Mathys Tel's cross goalwards, but Emiliano Martinez was equal to it, saving with his feet.

It was Kinsky who was then forced into a smart save as he got finger tips to Amadou Onana's cross that was sneaking into the far post.
Villa came forward with a wave of attacks, with Marco Asensio curling just wide from 20 yards and Konsa heading straight at Kinsky.
Frustrations were growing as the hosts floundered at the start of the second half but the tension was relieved as they finally made the breakthrough just before the hour.
Watkins rose highest from McGinn's corner and his knockdown was swept home by Konsa.
It was almost 2-0 60 seconds later but Kinsky got down well to keep out Watkins' effort.
Kamara did kill any jangling nerves in the 73rd minute when he unleashed a fierce low shot that was too hot to handle for Kinsky.
Villa saw it out to end their excellent home campaign with a record-extending 21st match unbeaten in all competitions, with goalkeeper Martinez, who has been linked with a move away, in tears at the end.
For Spurs, it is about going one more match this season without defeat.

The Denmark international has failed to thrive at Old Trafford as the club suffered two difficult seasons. Hojlund has scored 26 goals across 95 appearances for the Red Devils. The forward has not been alone in struggling in front of goal for United however, with the club managing just 44 goals in the Premier League last term. But that has seen Old Trafford bosses attempt to replenish their frontline for Ruben Amorim. United have already added Matheus Cunha in a £62.5million deal from Wolves, and missed out on signing striker Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea. They are now looking to get a deal over the line for Bryan Mbeumo, who bagged 20 goals for Brentford last term. Despite his difficulties, United head coach Amorim did defend his charge late in the season. The Portuguese boss did concede that improvement was required across the board however. "I'm happy, of course all the team has to improve, but the way he runs, he fights for every ball, loses a lot of duels, wins some duels, he needs to improve the connection. But he is improving, he said. "I'm really happy with him, he just needs to continue working hard and better things will come."

Arsenal have been informed of a £5million release clause for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga who cost the club £72m in 2018. The 30-year-old spent the season on loan with Bournemouth and kept eight clean sheets in his 31 appearances in the Premier League. Despite impressing during his stint at Vitality Stadium, the stopper remains surplus to requirements and the Blues could look to move him on permanently this summer. The £72m splashed out to snap him up from Athletic Bilbao represented a world record fee for a goalkeeper and Chelsea are braced to take a significant hit. Indeed, should Arsenal decide to trigger the bargain release clause in his contract, Kepa would move on for a fee 14 times less than his initial move to Chelsea. Last in action for his parent club in 2023, Kepa will see his current deal run down in 2026. He was also sent out on loan to Real Madrid in 2023, making 14 appearances. Arsenal are on the hunt for a new No 2 to provide back-up to David Raya, who won the top-flight's Golden Glove for a second consecutive season. Kepa has played 163 times for Chelsea to date, keeping 59 clean sheets. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has expressed an interest in keeping Kepa at the club but indicated a final decision has not been made. 'I think it is a matter of negotiating with Kepa himself and with Chelsea,' said Iraola. 'I think both sides are very happy with his loan spell. 'I think he has performed really well, and his character and experience have been very valuable for us. The big news from Scotland reached the talkSPORT airwaves this morning and once again Steven Gerrard's name cropped up Russell Martin is officially the new manager of Rangers after the long search came to a conclusion on Thursday – but Alan Brazil gets why some fans are 'underwhelmed' by the appointment. The Ibrox bosses went through a rigorous process with a number of big names including Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti mentioned to be Philippe Clement's successor, but in the end it was former defender and Southampton boss Martin who won the race. He was unveiled in his new role yesterday and will need to get cracking with Champions League qualifiers in around seven weeks time and the big pre-season return on June 23. The appointment has gathered mixed reviews and Brazil reckons he knows why 'one or two are underwhelmed'. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "I think why one or two people are underwhelmed is because Steven Gerrard's name was branded about. One or two other big names as well. "Listen, Russell is a good coach, no doubt about it. People, I don't know what they want. "The guy has managed in the Premiership, he took them down but they played good football at times but as Ally McCoist said, it is a different game in Scotland and you need players that can play out from the back and he's not sure that Rangers have got them." He added: "He's not daft. He will know Celtic have the superior side and squad at the moment. "He will be rubbing his hands taking on Brendan [Rodgers] don't worry about that. He knows how big Rangers are as a football club." Co-host Ray Parlour offered his view adding: "All I will say is, if you look to Steven Gerrard as manager. I don't know the reasons why, he was mentioned quite often. "People would probably want to play for Steven Gerrard because his name and all that sort of stuff. There is a project here under Steven Gerrard and I want to be part of that. "I am not knocking him here, and you've got to give him a chance and everybody deserves a chance and he might prove everybody wrong and win the league, who knows? "But people might look at Russell Martin and say 'do I really want to play for a person like that?' "I want to play for Steven Gerrard and his make up if it was Steven Davis and Jordan Henderson was involved, people like that. "It's quite exciting for any player to go and be part of that."
