Three teenagers were killed in Glenella following a head on collision between a Mazda and a pick up truck
Emergency services were called to the Mackay Ring Road in the town of Glenella on Friday about 10.40pm following reports of a multi-car crash.
Police and paramedics arrived to find a Mazda 2 sedan and Great Wall Cannon dual cab ute had collided.
Police say early investigations indicate the Mazda had been travelling in a southbound direction when it attempted to overtake a semi-trailer.
It then smashed head-on with a ute travelling northbound.
The three teens in the Mazda, two boys and a girl, all aged 19, died at the scene.
Police have said the driver of the Great Wall, a 29-year-old man from Blacks Beach, was seriously injured and taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the semi-trailer, a 68-year-old Kelso man, was uninjured.
The occupants of a fourth vehicle, an Isuzu D-Max, also escaped unharmed after veering off the road to avoid the crash.
Officers from the Mackay Forensic Crash Unit (FCU) are investigating and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sumira Gambhir faces court over Lucas crash that killed daughter
Don't miss out on the headlines from Ballarat. Followed categories will be added to My News. Lawyers for a Ballarat driver accused of causing the death of her daughter will receive a 50-page police report about the crash before the case proceeds. Winter Valley woman Sumira Gambhir, 42, faced Ballarat Magistrates' Court by video on Thursday. Ms Gambhir was in April charged with dangerous driving causing death, driving in a manner dangerous, careless driving, failing to give way at an intersection, and having an unrestrained child. The charges have to do with a crash on Carngham Rd near Finchs Rd in Lucas on August 10, 2024. It is alleged a silver Mazda sedan collided with a white Toyota Prado just after 7pm, with a passenger in the former car – a six-year-old Winter Valley child, understood to be Kiara Gambhir – dying at the scene. Another child from Winter Valley, aged 13, was flown to hospital with Ms Gambhir. On Thursday, defence lawyer Luke McMahon sought an adjournment to receive a 50-page police report, which prosecutors did not oppose. The case will continue on November 14. Ms Gambhir's bail was extended.
