Imane Khelif speaks out after Olympic gender test bombshell
Questions about Khelif's gender popped up during her run to Olympic boxing gold last summer, stemming from a failed test result from a gender eligibility test she took that barred her from the 2023 World Championships, the NY Post reports.
Khelif appeared to respond to the IOC decision days ago to form a working group that will be tasked with safeguarding women's sports, and the new IOC policy is expected to ban transgender athletes as well as those with differences of sexual development from taking part in the female category.
In a post on Monday, Khelif wrote in an Instagram Story, 'Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.'
The post also included the song 'I'm Still Here' by Sia.
Khelif was assigned female at birth and is not transgender, but faced questions about her gender during the Olympics, causing some to question the fairness of the boxer to compete in the sport's female category during the Paris Games.
She has faced calls for her to be stripped of her gold medal recently, which included the president of the International Boxing Association.
The controversy was brought back into the spotlight earlier this month as well, after 3 Wire Sports published leaked test results from 2023, which appeared to show she had male XY chromosomes.
New International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry said during her first meeting that there would be no action taken 'retrospectively' in regards to past results that were in question.
It was during that same meeting that Coventry announced her plan to have the IOC address the issue of transgender athletes competing in female sports.
'It was agreed by the members that the IOC should take a leading role in this,' Coventry said during the livestreamed meeting, according to The Guardian. 'And that we should be the ones to bring together the experts and the international federations and ensure that we find consensus.
'We understand that there will be differences depending on the sports. But it was fully agreed that as members that, as the IOC, we should make the effort to place emphasis on protection of the female category.'

England name 21-year-old Jacob Bethell as captain for T20 International series against Ireland
Jacob Bethell will break a record which has stood for 136 years when the 21-year-old all-rounder becomes England's youngest ever men's cricket captain next month. Bethell will lead England against Ireland in three T20 Internationals in Dublin. The previous youngest England captain was Monty Bowden, who was 23 in 1889 when he took charge for a Test in South Africa after regular skipper Aubrey Smith fell ill with fever. Some senior players will be missing in Ireland, including usual white-ball captain Harry Brook, who will be in charge of one-day international and T20I games against visiting South Africa earlier in September. "Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads, and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England men's selector Luke Wright said in a statement on Friday. The captaincy is part of a rapid rise for Bethell, who made his debuts for England in all three formats only last year. The series in Ireland begins on September 17, after England's tour of South Africa for three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three T20 matches, starting September 2. Right-arm fast bowler Sonny Baker has earned his first national team call-up for the ODIs against South Africa after the 22-year-old impressed selectors with his performance for England Lions and in domestic cricket. England will then travel to New Zealand in October for a white-ball tour, followed by five Ashes Tests in Australia from November. AP/Reuters

New-look Liverpool kick off Premier League season after spending spree
Reigning champions Liverpool kick off the Premier League season on Friday with Europe's richest league strengthened by a remarkable £2 billion ($2.7 billion) spending splurge. Liverpool will include £100 million midfield signing Florian Wirtz and new forward Hugo Ekitike in their squad to face Bournemouth at Anfield, among a handful of new recruits. They are favourites to retain their crown but the unknown factor is the potential effect of the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in a car crash in Spain in July. Arsenal, one club hoping to topple Liverpool, face an immediate test of their title credentials against a revamped Manchester United on Sunday. Newcastle are set to be without unsettled star striker Alexander Isak for a tough trip to Aston Villa -- the Swede is wanted by Liverpool. Here are several issues to watch on the opening weekend: Big-spending Liverpool seek harmony Liverpool have changed their careful shopping habits and suddenly outspent their rivals, overhauling a squad fresh from winning the league. Only once since 2007, when Manchester City did it in 2019, have the Premier League champions been the biggest-spending English club in the market. A spree that has already seen Liverpool's US owners approve £260 million on Wirtz, Ekitike and defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, is far from over with Isak and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi linked with moves to Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have been sold. The transition has shown teething problems in pre-season with a slick attack let down by a porous defence. Manager Arne Slot is confident his side are ready as they seek to retain the title for the first time since 1984. "I think we've lost five to six players that played quite a lot of minutes for us last season and we brought in four new ones, so then it's normal that there's a little bit of adaptation," said Slot. "But we are definitely ready for the league to start." Sesko and Gyokeres seek scoring start Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are set to make their Premier League debuts for United and Arsenal respectively at Old Trafford after a summer that could have seen them line up the other way on Sunday. Arsenal were linked with a move to Sesko for over a year before deciding to bet on Gyokeres as the man to fire them to a first Premier League title since 2004 for a fee that could rise to £66 million. The Gunners have finished second for the past three seasons, lacking a clinical finisher to take that final step towards being champions Gyokeres netted a remarkable 97 times in 102 games in two years at Sporting Lisbon, much of which came under United's now-manager Ruben Amorim. Instead of being reunited with the Swede, Amorim has overhauled his attack with the signings of Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha at a combined cost of over £200 million. United, one of the world's richest clubs, had to spend big after their worst season since being relegated in 1974. In Amorim's first year in charge, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for Europe, losing the Europa League final. Both clubs desperately need a fast start and the battle between the two new number nines will go a long way to deciding the outcome. Villa and Newcastle chase 'big six' As the Premier League's traditional "big six" of Liverpool, Manchester City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have flexed their financial muscle in the transfer market, Villa and Newcastle have been squeezed out. Constrained by the need to meet financial sustainability rules, Villa's only major signing has been Ivorian stiker Evann Guessand from Nice. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has had to field constant questions about Isak, who sat out pre-season preparations in a bid to force through a move to Liverpool. Despite having Saudi owners, the Magpies' attempts to replace the Swede have repeatedly fallen down, with most of their targets going elsewhere. But both Villa and Newcastle have consistently outperformed some of the "big six" in recent seasons and will be targeting Champions League qualification again this season. kca/gj/pb

Bayern's Bundesliga crown up for grabs after rocky summer
Pretenders to the crown Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and cup holders Stuttgart are priming themselves for a run at Bayern Munich's Bundesliga title after a frustrating summer transfer window for the Bavarian giants. Bayern travel to Stuttgart on Saturday for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup -- the season opener which pits the defending league champions against the reigning German Cup victors. Winners of 12 of the past 13 Bundesliga titles, Bayern occupy their usual role as favourites for the crown. This summer, however, the 34-time league champions have not had everything go their own way. Efforts to lure Florian Wirtz away from Leverkusen fell flat, with the German footballer of the year opting rather for a move to the Premier League and Liverpool. Although Bayern secured attacker Luis Diaz from the English champions, they lost Thomas Mueller, Leroy Sane and Eric Dier on free transfers. Kingsley Coman is set for a move to Saudi Arabia, Mathys Tel made his Spurs loan permanent and efforts to sign Germany striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart have been rebuffed. Speaking with the Bundesliga website on Thursday, Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich said the shifting sands across the league this summer made it hard to see who would be their main rivals. "We'll see who knocks at the top. For us, it will be important to go our own way. We can't influence what the others will do," Kimmich said. Kimmich nominated former side RB Leipzig to bounce back after a poor 2024/25 campaign, where they missed out on Europe for the first time in the top flight. The Saxon club have brought in several young talents including winger Johan Bakayoko and midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, in former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp's first summer transfer window as Red Bull global head of football. "Leipzig have a good team. Because Leipzig aren't in European competition, they'll be able to concentrate on the Bundesliga," Kimmich added. - New-look Leverkusen - Leverkusen, Bayern's principal rival across the past two seasons, have undergone a clear-out this summer. Most of the main contributors to their stunning unbeaten 2023/24 league and cup double have moved on. Wirtz, along with wing-back Jeremie Frimpong have signed with Liverpool. Midfield conductor Granit Xhaka has also moved to the Premier League, while Germany defender Jonathan Tah has joined title rivals Bayern. The biggest loss of all, however, is coach Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard departing to join Real Madrid. His replacement, former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, will be looking to revive his own reputation while cobbling together a squad with several new arrivals. Impressive last season in finishing third, Eintracht Frankfurt are also rebuilding, having lost centre-forward Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool in July, just six months after winger Omar Marmoush moved to Manchester City. Quietly building under Bundesliga-winning coach Niko Kovac, Borussia Dortmund could again trouble old foes Bayern this term. Kovac took over the reins in January with Dortmund flailing but helped the club rise from 11th to fourth, picking up 22 of a possible 24 points to end the season. The addition of Jobe Bellingham will provide steel in midfield, while the only major loss is winger Jamie Gittens who moved to Chelsea, having struggled for game time under Kovac. Cup winners Stuttgart, who finished second ahead of Bayern in 2023/24, look set to continue troubling the big guns. Stuttgart captain Atakan Karazor told AFP and other media on Thursday: "We have a very special team... we've got quality players in every position -- even some that people haven't heard of." Karazor said the key man is coach Sebastian Hoeness, who has taken Stuttgart from relegation battlers to cup winners and European football in just over two years at the helm. "An amazing, amazing coach. You can see his handwriting on everything the team does. From the moment he came in, the mindset of the team changed," the midfielder said. dwi/nf/nr
