A lethal fungus that can rot human tissue from within is spreading rapidly across the US, and experts warn the problem could worsen as temperatures rise.
Aspergillus fumigatus is airborne and nearly impossible to avoid. Its spores are so tiny that people inhale them without noticing.
It can cause a serious lung infection called aspergillosis, which in vulnerable individuals can lead to organ failure and death.
Those with weakened immune systems, such as patients with cancer, asthma, or HIV, are especially at risk.
Scientists have found the fungus invading parts of the US, with Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, and California seeing the highest exposure due to hot, humid climates and farming activity.
Major cities like New York, Houston, and Los Angeles face added risks from dense populations and aging infrastructure.
Officials said that aspergillosis isn't a reportable disease in the US, meaning infections, hospitalizations, and deaths aren't tracked, making it hard to detect.
Doctors advise people with weakened immune systems to avoid soil, gardening, and moldy environments, wear masks in dusty areas, and maintain clean air in hospitals and homes. US hospitals have stepped up mold inspections and antifungal protocols.
Co-author Norman van Rhijn, from the University of Manchester, told the Financial Times: 'We're talking about hundreds of thousands of lives, and continental shifts in species distributions.
'In 50 years, where things grow and what you get infected by is going to be completely different.'
About 400,000 of these cases develop into chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, a long-term lung infection.
Invasive aspergillosis is less common but far deadlier. It mainly targets people with weakened immune systems and can spread from the lungs to the brain, heart, and kidneys.
One study found only 59 percent of organ transplant patients survived a year after infection, and just 25 percent of stem cell transplant patients.
Hospitalizations for invasive aspergillosis in the US rose about three percent annually from 2000 to 2013.
By 2014, nearly 15,000 hospital stays were recorded, costing an estimated $1.2 billion.

The World Health Organization lists Aspergillus fumigatus as a 'critical priority' fungal threat due to rising drug resistance and high death rates.

Eating the daily recommended quantity of fruits during daytime can lead to 'meaningful change' against insomnia within just a day, a new study suggests. Sleep fragmentation can have far-reaching consequences, including negative effects on heart health, memory, learning, and mood regulation. Poor sleep may also cause people to gravitate towards an unhealthier lifestyle, leaning on diets higher in fat and sugar, studies have shown. However, far less is known about how diet can affect sleep patterns, say researchers from Columbia and the University of Chicago. The latest study, published in the journal Sleep Health, showed that shifting from a lifestyle of eating no fruits to one including five cups a day can induce sound sleep at night. Its findings are the first to draw a time-based connection between a given day's food choices and objectively measured sleep quality that same night. "It's remarkable that such a meaningful change could be observed within less than 24 hours," said sleep expert Esra Tasali, a co-author of the new study. 'Dietary modifications could be a new, natural and cost-effective approach to achieve better sleep,' Dr Tasali said. The study included healthy young adults who reported their daily food consumption using an app and wore a wrist monitor that allowed the researchers to objectively measure their sleep patterns. Scientists specifically looked at 'sleep fragmentation,' a measure that reflects how often a person awakens or shifts from deep to light sleep throughout the night. Researchers found that each day's diet was linked to 'meaningful differences' in the subsequent night's sleep. Those who ate more fruits and vegetables during the day were observed to have deeper, more uninterrupted sleep at night. Participants who ate healthier carbohydrates, like whole grains, also seemed to have better sleep, scientists observed. Overall, researchers estimated that people who eat their recommended quota of five cups of fruits and veggies per day could experience a 16 per cent boost in sleep quality compared to those who consume no fruits or vegetables. '16 per cent is a highly significant difference,' Dr Tasali said. Scientists hope to conduct further research across diverse populations to examine the underlying mechanisms that could explain the positive impact of fruits and vegetables on sleep quality. Based on the latest results, they advise that regularly eating a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, fruits, and vegetables is best for long-term sleep health. 'Small changes can impact sleep. That is empowering – better rest is within your control,' said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, another author of the study.

Last Christmas I was prescribed antibiotics for a post-operative infection. The pharmacy assistant insisted, despite my questioning, that I was exempt from prescription charges. Two weeks later I returned with another prescription, and was told that they had made a mistake and I was liable for charges after all. I paid the outstanding fee on the spot. I have since received a letter from the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) stating that I will be fined for non-payment of the original prescription. I have provided evidence of payment, and my pharmacist has written to it confirming the error, but the NHSBSA says both are inadmissible. Reviewers reporting a similar experience on Trustpilot compare NHSBSA's intransigence to the Post Office's behaviour during the Horizon scandal, and I have to agree. LM, Leamington Spa The number of blameless people fined by the NHSBSA for non-payment is a scandal that I exposed and have covered repeatedly. They include new mothers and cancer patients who are entitled to free prescriptions but who, due to an oversight by medical staff, were not registered for an exemption certificate. The NHSBSA, which checks patient exemptions on behalf of the NHS, insisted that, because you didn't pay the charge on the day you collected the prescription, you were liable for a fine, which is five times the prescription fee plus the original charge. It reversed at speed when I got in touch and, hours later, informed you that you were in the clear. Its statement implies it repented its intransigence unprompted. 'Following investigation, we recognise that, in this case, the patient realised the error and acted quickly to correct the issue before receiving an inquiry letter from the NHSBSA.
