BYD's 16 month production growth streak ends in July amid cooling EV demand

Hindustan Times03-08-2025
BYD , the volume leader in electric vehicles (EVs) globally, announced a decline in car output in July 2025, ending a 16-month sales growth run that had long driven its advance over such international competitors as Tesla .
According to its latest filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, BYD produced 317,892 vehicles globally last month—a 0.9 per cent decline compared to July 2024.

While overall sales rose just 0.6 per cent year-on-year to 344,296 units, this was a significant slowdown from the 12 per cent growth it saw in June.

Plug-in hybrids drag down overall numbers
The company's pure electric vehicle (EV) segment still showed modest growth, but its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) business took a sharper hit. PHEV sales dropped 22.6 per cent, while production declined by 24.6 per cent year-on-year.

The last time BYD posted a production fall was in February 2024, due to the timing of China's Lunar New Year holiday. In this case, however, the decline appears to mirror wider cooling in the Chinese auto market, where an extended price war and regulatory watchfulness over discounting trends are affecting OEM plans.
High targets under pressure
BYD's target is selling 5.5 million vehicles in 2025, but it has delivered only 2.49 million units up to the end of July. That means the company must average more than 602,000 units per month across the last five months—a demanding rate considering that its all-time monthly record is just shy of 515,000 units, set in December 2024.
The summer seasonal slowdown in China's automobile market is another added burden. July is usually a weak month for sales, and while others such as Geely, Leapmotor, Xpeng, and Xiaomi Auto made record or near-record sales, BYD's slightly above-zero growth has put its momentum under a microscope.

Competition stays strong, rivals gain ground
Among competitors, Geely sold 237,717 cars in July—its best since November 2024. New energy startups Leapmotor and Xpeng delivered 50,129 and 36,717 vehicles respectively, both setting new monthly records. Meanwhile, Xiaomi's EV arm crossed the 30,000-unit mark for the first time.
In contrast, Li Auto's July sales plunged about 40 per cent to 30,731 units, and Nio Inc. reported a 16 per cent drop from June, with sales slipping to their lowest since March.

Electric vehicle sales growth eases to 21% in July

Global electric vehicle sales grew 21 per cent year-on-year in July, the slowest rate since January and down from 25 per cent in June, as momentum in plug-in hybrid sales in China slackened, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday. China is the world's biggest car market and accounts for more than half of global EV sales , which in Rho Motion's data include battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Its overall car sales growth slowed in July, with BYD , the world's largest EV maker, recording its third monthly drop in registrations. The relatively muted slowdown in overall EV sales however shows other markets are taking up some of the slack, with European sales for one benefiting from incentives aimed at speeding up decarbonisation. Global sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids rose to 1.6 million units in July, Rho Motion data showed. China's EV sales growth, which averaged 36 per cent a month in the first half, eased to 12 per cent in July as the previously booming market was dampened by a pause in some 2025 government subsidy schemes for EV and plug-in hybrid purchases, Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester said. Chinese sales reached around one million vehicles. European sales surged 48 per cent to about 390,000 units, while North American sales climbed 10 per cent to more than 170,000. Sales in the rest of the world jumped 55 per cent to more than 140,000 vehicles. "Despite regional variations, the overall trajectory for EV adoption in 2025 remains strongly upward," Lester said. Chinese car sales are expected to return to strong growth from August as new funds become available for its subsidy schemes, while a cut in US tax credits for buying or leasing new EVs at the end of September will hurt demand there, Lester added.

China Evergrande Group, world's most indebted property developer, to delist from Hong Kong Stock Exchange after largest debt collapse

China Evergrande Group will be delisted from Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The developer's shares will be delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on August 25 after they failed to resume trading per listing rules, the firm also said in a filing. Shares of Evergrande, once China's top developer which was listed in Hong Kong in 2009, have been suspended from trading since January 29, 2024, the day it received a liquidation order from the Hong Kong High Court. Evergrande is not listed on mainland Chinese stock markets. Evergrande's debt collapse is the largest in China, lawyers say, and the liquidation has proved challenging as the majority of Evergrande's units and assets are offshore and many of them have been seized by creditors. The liquidation order came after it failed to provide a viable restructuring plan for its $23 billion offshore debt. The company appears set to be delisted from the Hong Kong bourse as a result of its failure to meet the exchange's rules on resumption of trading within 18 months of the commencement of trading suspension. Its capitalisation, which once topped HK$400 billion ($51 billion), had shrunk to HK$2.2 billion when share trading was halted. The delisting of what had been one of China's prestige companies would add to gloom hanging over other developers which are scrambling to stay afloat and avoid getting into liquidation litigation by securing creditors' support to revamp debt. Live Events China Property Market China's property market, once a key growth driver for the world's second-largest economy, has been in a multi-year tailspin despite repeated government attempts to revive weak consumer demand. China's Ab&B Bio-Tech shares soar 170% driven by retail demand

Shares of China's Ab&B Bio-Tech gained nearly 170% on Monday, as the vaccine development firm debuted on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange after it raised $55 million in an initial public offering. ADVERTISEMENT The retail tranche of the IPO was nearly 4,000 times oversubscribed by investors, the company's filings showed. The share hit a high of HK$34.80 in early trade, with about 7.68 million Ab&B Bio-Tech shares worth HK$253.8 million ($32.33 million) changing hands on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The Hang Seng Index was up 0.2% on Monday. Ab&B Bio-Tech, which is developing influenza and rabies vaccines, sold 33.44 million shares at HK$12.90 each, according to the filings. The price set was at the bottom of the range flagged to investors when the deal was launched. The strong demand from Hong Kong's retail investors meant 651,600 shares due to be sold to institutional investors were re-allocated to those public investors, the filings showed. ADVERTISEMENT There were nearly 192,000 applications from retail investors to buy stock and 18,984 of those were allocated shares. Despite the retail buying, weak demand from institutions meant the institutional portion of the deal was only just covered. ADVERTISEMENT ($1 = 7.8498 Hong Kong dollars).
