Driver held for hitting cop with car is illegal B'deshi immigrant
Kolkata: A Bangladeshi national living illegally in Bengal was arrested by Kolkata Police investigating an incident of
when he hit an on-duty cop with his car last week. Azad Sheikh (41) was arrested by Kalighat police after the accident.

While checking his credentials, it was found that he was living in India illegally.
He was booked under further relevant sections under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and The Foreigners Act.
According to cops, Azad, originally from Sahasaril Bazar in Faridpur, Bangladesh, entered Indian territory illegally sometime after Oct 2023. He has been living in Khassankdaha village in Sandeshkhali.
"He confessed to entering India without proper travel documents, like a passport or visa.
He had a fake Aadhaar card, with which he obtained a driving licence to work as a driver. We learned the identification documents he had were entirely fake and are checking the genuineness of the driving licence as well," said an officer.
Police said that on May 18, around 6.25 am, Azad was driving a private car near Kalighat temple and hit a bike driven by Netaji Nagar police station assistant sub-inspector Susen Das. The accident happened at the Kali Temple Road-Sadananda Road crossing.
Das, who was on his way to a law-and-order duty post near Tolly's Nala, sustained a fracture in his leg, facial abrasions, and waist injuries after he fell off the bike on impact.
He was admitted to ICU at a private hospital in Alipore, and Azad was arrested following a complaint lodged by the officer's wife.
Initially treating the incident as a case of rash and negligent driving, and an attempt to commit culpable homicide under BNS sections 281, 125(b), 324(4), and 110, the cops found that the Aadhaar card and driving licence submitted by Azad were fake.

Later, during interrogation, he confessed to being a Bangladeshi. Azad eventually narrated how he crossed the Bongaon border by paying a member of a brokerage syndicate in Oct 2023, who then brought Azad to Dum Dum and arranged for him to stay as a paying guest.
The man confessed that the broker connected him with someone who creates fake identification documents. Azad's fake Aadhaar card and other documents were made using an address in North 24 Parganas.
He claimed he used to drive in Faridpur, and based on his past knowledge and fake documents, he obtained a driving licence and joined a private firm in South Kolkata as a driver. "He admitted that last week, he hit the cop with the car.
He admitted that he had dozed off at the wheel when the accident happened," said an officer.
On May 21, Azad was arrested in a separate case under section 14A(b) of The Foreigners Act and section 212 (furnishing false information to a public servant) of BNS. He was produced in a city court and was sent to police custody. Cops have also arrested a linkman, Zafar Ali Sheikh, who connected Azad to the broker. He was produced in an Alipore court and sent to police custody till June 4.

Police have arrested the owner and the manager of a guest house in North Goa district where three minor girls were allegedly raped by two men, taking the number of those held in the case to four, officials said on Thursday. The girls, aged 11, 13 and 15 and residents of the same building, were allegedly raped by two men at the guest house located in Calangute area on June 7 and 8. The five had checked-in at the guest house together, they said. The two older girls are sisters. The girls' parents filed complaints on June 8 that they had gone missing a day earlier. All the four accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Goa Children's Act, the police said. "We are sealing the guest house and moving for cancellation of its license. The guest house management and owners will not be spared if they give room to a child in the absence of any family or relatives accompanying him or her," the SP said, cautioning all such facilities in the state.

K ASARAGOD: While most childhood fights are forgotten with time, a decades-old schoolyard fight have simmered for decades and resurfaced violently in Kasaragod 52 years later. Balakrishanan, 62, of Maloth House in Kasaragod reopened a schoolyard scuffle by attacking his Class IV classmate and getting himself landed in a police case. Vellarikundu police have booked two elderly men, both classmates, for allegedly injuring an elderly man over the fight which took place in their primary school days. According to V J Babu, 62, a native of Vellarikundu, he was attacked by Balakrishnan and another classmate Mathew Valiyaplackkal at Malom town on Monday. He alleged that the attack was in retaliation to an old quarrel which had erupted between Babu and Balakrishnan when they were studying in Class IV at Natakkallu Aided UP School in Malom 52 years ago. As per the FIR, the accused, Balakrishnan and Mathew, were Babu's classmates at the school and there were quarrel between Babu and Balakrishnan while they were studying in Class IV. On Monday, Balakrishnan along with Mathew confronted Babu at Malom town around 1pm and while Balakrishnan restrained him by grabbing the collar of his shirt, Mathew allegedly hit him on the face and back of the body with a stone, causing injuries. Babu lost two teeth, and was admitted to the Govt Medical College Hospital at Pariyaram in Kannur. Babu claimed the long-standing grudge held by Balakrishnan led to the attack. Babu said he had beaten up Balakrishnan once when they were studying in Class IV, following which an argument had erupted between them and Balakrishnan held a grudge about it. However, the trio had been behaving like friends in the ensuing years. Gambling ring bust: 14 held from hotel with Rs 25.3 lakh in Mohali
In a major crackdown on illegal gambling and fraud, the Mohali police raided KC Royal Hotel at Zirakpur and arrested 14 individuals involved in operating a betting and fraud racket. The raid led to the seizure of Rs 25.3 lakh in Indian currency, 19 mobile phones, playing cards, a betting register (net book), seven cars, and one Activa scooter. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans, addressing a press conference Wednesday, said that the operation was conducted under a special campaign. The arrests were made based on a tip-off received by Station House Officer (SHO) Satinder Singh of Zirakpur police station, who led the raid with his team. 'We received specific information that the owner of KC Royal Hotel, Senti, along with his manager, was luring innocent people with promises of high returns and operating a betting racket on the hotel's third floor,' SSP Hans said. An FIR was registered under sections 3 and 4 of the Gambling Act and Section 318(4) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). The arrested individuals were identified as Ravi from Dhakoli, Surinder Singh, Shivam, Anil Kumar and Sunil Kumar, residents of Chandigarh, Vijay Kumar, Arvind Kumar from Abohar, Naveen Kumar from Ganganagar, Ashok Kumar from Panchkula, Sukhjinder Singh from Moga, Pitabeer from Baltana, Subhash Chandra, Ashok Kumar from Panchkula, and Raj Bahadur, a Nepal national.
