Red Hot Paige Spiranac Gives U.S. Open Dark Horses, Breaks Down Oakmont
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When it comes to predicting major championships, Paige Spiranac has a better track record than many expert forecasters, at least for the current season. The popular golf influencer correctly predicted the winners of the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship, and she hopes to extend her streak at the US Open. Spiranac shared her US Open predictions on her X account, which has over one million followers. "Cream normally rise to the top in championships like this, so no surprise the favorites are going to be Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau, but if you're looking at some dark horses, I'm liking Harris English and Ben Griffin," she said. "I'm looking for carnage this week and fingers crossed that we actually get an over par winner." There's no question that these four picks are extremely interesting. Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite in any prediction given his recent performance, especially over the past month. During that period, the World No. 1 won three tournaments, including the PGA Championship, his third career major. DeChambeau, for his part, has been second to none in terms of strong results. The reigning U.S. Open champion has a victory in LIV Golf and finished in the top 10 in the first two major championships of this season. In fact, the two-time major champion has finished in the top 10 in five of the last six majors, including one victory and two runner-up finishes. (Photo byfor Sports Illustrated Swimsuit) MoreAs for Spiranac's dark horses, they are certainly two of the hottest players on the PGA Tour right now. English won the Farmers Insurance Open earlier in 2025 and finished second in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow just four weeks ago. Meanwhile, Griffin has won twice in the last six weeks (Zurich Classic and Rocket Mortgage Classic). During that time, he also achieved a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship and a second-place finish at the Memorial Tournament. The surprise in Spiranac's prediction came when she didn't mention Rory McIlroy, who is considered by most forecasters to be one of the top favorites to win the US Open. His most recent results—T47 at the PGA Championship and missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open—likely influenced her omission. As you may recall, McIlroy's results came after the USGA found his competition driver as non-conforming ahead of the PGA Championship. However, he has been seen at the Oakmont Country Club carrying the TaylorMade Qi10 model again, which he used for his early season successes. Christian McCaffrey: "I feel great" after injury-riddled 2024 season
After struggling through multiple injuries in 2024, running back Christian McCaffrey is healthy as the 49ers complete their offseason program this week. A day after head coach Kyle Shanahan called him 'a psycho in a good way,' McCaffrey told reporters that he's feeling great entering the summer break. 'I think this offseason I spent a lot of time kind of building back a base starting from scratch, so a lot of it was rehab,' McCaffrey said, via Nick Wagoner of ESPN, 'and [I] wanted to put myself in a position where I didn't miss a day of OTAs and I could practice and play football again, be healthy and not miss a day, and I did that.' In just four games last season, McCaffrey rushed for 202 yards and caught 15 passes for 146 yards. When he won AP offensive player of the year in 2023, McCaffrey led the league with 1,459 yards rushing, 339 touches, 2,023 yards from scrimmage, and 23 total touchdowns.

Scottie Scheffler Reveals Concerning Message Ahead of The U.S. Open originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The U.S. Open is back this week, and it's shaping up to be one of the most anticipated majors of the year. With Oakmont Country Club hosting, fans and players alike know it's going to be a brutal test of both physical skill and mental endurance. Known for its tight fairways, deep rough, and lightning-fast greens, Oakmont doesn't leave much room for error. The lowest winning score at this venue? Just 5-under. Advertisement Scottie Scheffler, fresh off wins at the Memorial and the PGA Championship, enters as the betting favorite but he's not letting the noise get to him. 'The U.S. Open compared to the Masters is a completely different type of test. I think in the Masters you have a lot more shot making when you get around the greens,' Scheffler said at his press conference Tuesday. Scottie Scheffler looks at the trophy on hole No. 18 after the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Course on Madar/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Scheffler, currently the world number one, offered a unique perspective on how the U.S. Open differs from other majors. 'It's just a different type of test,' he said. Comparing it to tennis, where majors are played on different surfaces. "When you miss a green at the Masters, the ball kind of runs away and it goes into these areas and you can play a bump, you can play a flop," Scheffler said. He emphasized how strength and precision will be key, saying, ' Here, when you hit the ball over the green, you're just getting some heavy rough and it's like, let me see how I can pop the ball out of this rough and somehow give myself a look.'
