Stuart Broad hits back at David Warner after ‘surfboard' jab at Joe Root
Stuart Broad has hit back at David Warner 's jibe at Joe Root, as a war of words escalates ahead of the Ashes this November. Warner, who retired from international cricket last year, is in England for a spell with London Spirit in The Hundred. The Australian made a dig at the expense of England batter Root, telling BBC Sport, 'The big anchor there is Rooty, who is yet to score a hundred in Australia.' In a jibe referencing Root's propensity to get out lbw, he said: ' Josh Hazlewood tends to have his number quite a lot. He will have to take the surfboard off his front leg.' Root is the No 1 Test batter in the world and a key member of England's squad as they hope to reverse their recent fortunes in Australia. However, he has been dismissed 10 times in 18 Tests by seamer Hazlewood. Broad, however, weighed in on the topic, taking to social media to refute Warner's comments. 'I've never heard England's best ever batters front pad called a Surfboard,' Broad wrote on X, formerly Twitter, accompanied by two laughing emojis. 'Just for clarity. Hazelwood has got Rooty LBW in Test Cricket 3 times. Three,' he added.

Callum Wilson agrees immediate Premier League transfer return as England striker joins Newcastle rivals
CALLUM WILSON has agreed to join West Ham on a one-year deal. The striker became a free agent this summer after his Newcastle contract expired. 1 There had been interest from newly-promoted Leeds and Everton. But according to The Athletic, Wilson has agreed to join West Ham. SunSport revealed last week how the Hammers had opened talks to sign the former England international. Wilson had also turned down a pay-as-you play deal at Newcastle, who decided against taking up an option to extend his deal this summer. Newcastle decided against triggering their one-year option on the forward which would have kept him on the same wage of about £45,000-a-week. The 33-year-old has long been admired at the London Stadium - has already completed a medical. His new deal is heavily performance incentive-based. Wilson scored 47 goals in 113 appearances for the Magpies, but has struggled with back and hamstring injuries during his time with the club. Meanwhile West Ham released both Danny Ings and Michail Antonio at the end of last season.

Jaiswal and Deep extend India's lead
LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and nightwatchman Akash Deep shared a stubborn century partnership to frustrate a toothless England attack on the third day of the fifth test at The Oval on Saturday. The touring side, needing victory to draw the series 2-2, had moved on to 189-3 at lunch under murky skies, a good lead of 166 runs with England's callow seamers looking bereft of ideas and inspiration. Deep fell for 66 just before the interval to end a stand of 107 with Jaiswal who was unbeaten on 85 alongside his captain Shubman Gill on 11. Missing the experience of Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes due to injury, England's pace bowlers struggled to extract much movement off the pitch. Deep, on 21, was spilled by Zak Crawley in the slips off Josh Tongue, England's fourth dropped catch of the innings, and stand-in captain Olly Pope looked bereft of ideas. Under the floodlights, Deep reached his first test fifty off 70 balls by whipping Gus Atkinson neatly through square leg for his ninth boundary before gleefully pumping his fists in celebration. Jamie Overton finally removed Deep with a ball that lifted sharply and looped up to cover where Atkinson ran in quickly to take a low catch, but even that did little to cheer a subdued home crowd.
