
Delhi considers building elevated road over ring road to ease chronic congestion

ew Delhi: With the city's Ring Road catering to heavier traffic than its capacity, Delhi govt is toying with the idea of building an elevated road over the existing 55-km stretch.
PWD minister Parvesh Verma said he had already asked for a feasibility of such a project, with the proposed road to be built on pillars and connected with other arterial roads through ramps. Verma said he had discussed the plan with Union minister for road, transport and highways Nitin Gadkari and received a go-ahead from him.
"This will be one of the biggest projects of this govt and will be completed within its term," Verma told TOI.
The minister said that Delhi's two ring roads bear the maximum load of traffic and remain clogged during peak hours. Adding to the capacity of the existing road would help ease traffic on the existing one while also decongesting other roads that connect with Ring Road. "Since the new road will be entirely elevated, it can be built on pillars along the central verge of the existing road.
The project will not require any acquisition of land and so can be completed within a given timeframe," Verma said.

Since a large volume of traffic using the Ring Road disperses on other important arterial roads such as Mathura Road, Aurobindo Marg, DND Flyway or head to the airport, Gurgaon, Rohtak Road and other highways, Verma said traffic movement would become obstruction-free with the construction of the new elevated road. "The cost of the construction of an elevated road comes to about Rs 100 crore per kilometre. This project can easily be completed at a cost of Rs 5,500-6,000 crore," the PWD minister said.
Once a relatively efficient arterial corridor designed to decongest central areas and facilitate cross-city travel, Ring Road is now facing chronic congestion. Unlike the newer Outer Ring Road, developed later to redirect peripheral traffic, the inner Ring Road is buckling under mounting pressures. From urban sprawl and flawed planning to infrastructure saturation and enforcement gaps, a confluence of factors has brought the once-speedy corridor to a glacial pace.
When Ring Road was originally planned in the 1950s and completed in the following decades, it was meant to serve a very different city — both in population and traffic volume. At the time, Delhi had fewer than three million residents. Today, the metro region is home to over 30 million. The road, however, has not expanded proportionately to accommodate this growth. What was once designed as a bypass route now functions as a semi-central road.
As the city grew outward, neighbourhoods like South Extension, Punjabi Bagh, Lajpat Nagar and Ashram became dense mid-city urban hubs. Ring Road now cuts through commercial, institutional and residential areas. The corridor is used not just by through traffic but also by local traffic to access shops, markets, schools and hospitals — all of which generate frequent stops and lane intrusions.
Intersections like AIIMS, Moolchand, Dhaula Kuan, Ashram and ITO are choke points where arterial routes intersect with heavy local traffic. While flyovers and underpasses have been built at some locations, they often only shift the congestion rather than resolve it. Delhi Traffic Police conducted a survey in 2024 and found that of 134 congestion hotspots, at least 12 were located on Ring Road and Outer Ring Road.

Passport of Rajasthan staffer held for spying reveals 4 Pakistan trips
JAISALMER: The intelligence unit of Rajasthan Police Saturday found the passport of alleged ISI spy Shakur Khan during a search at his govt residence in Jaisalmer. The passport revealed he made four trips to Pakistan, with the most recent visit in March 2025. Khan, who had claimed his old passport was lost, was arrested earlier this week under the Official Secrets Act. An assistant administrative officer at the Jaisalmer district employment office, Khan is accused of facilitating Pakistani visas for numerous individuals through direct connections with Pakistani High Commission officials. Inspector General Vishnu Kant of Rajasthan Intelligence Agency confirmed that Khan worked closely with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani official who was expelled from India on May 13. The espionage case has expanded significantly with over 25 individuals who received visa assistance from Khan being interrogated by a Rajasthan Intelligence team. The questioning continued for the second consecutive day on Saturday. "We are examining Khan's bank account records," Kant told TOI. BJP pushed Himachal into financial crisis during its tenure: Sukhu
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu once again lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while blaming the saffron party's predecessor government for pushing the state in financial crisis. Sukhu was addressing a public meeting at Daulatpur Chowk in Una district on Saturday. Taking jibe at the BJP, Sukhu said, 'During five years of its regime, the BJP kept on boasting about the 'double engine sarkar', but could not significantly contribute to the development of the state and raised loans from the Centre, thus pushing the state in financial crisis'. He said that to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant, the Congress government was determined to take some harsh decisions to improve the economy with co-operation of the people of the state. CM on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth Rs. 75.10 crore in Gagret in Una district. The Chief Minister announced additional funds for the remaining work on the Daulatpur-Bhadrakali road, for which ₹15 crore has already been spent. He also declared that the necessary funds will be released to complete the remaining construction work of the new building of Gagret Hospital. The Chief Minister informed the public that the survey work for the Hoshiarpur-Nadaun four-lane road project has been completed and the construction work will commence shortly. He further assured that the Shivbari Fair will be granted district-level status. In addition, the vacant posts of doctors at Daulatpur Chowk and Gagret Primary Health Centres will be filled soon to improve healthcare services in the region. The Chief Minister also announced the installation of tube wells in water-scarce areas of the Gagret Assembly Constituency to address the issue of drinking water shortage. He also mentioned that there were some concerns regarding the establishment of a Bulk Drug Park in Haroli. However, the construction of the park is now set to begin soon. Criticizing the previous government's education policies, the Chief Minister said that Himachal Pradesh, once ranked among the top states in quality education, has dropped down to 21st position due to 'flawed policies' of the previous BJP government. 'The present government has decided to merge such schools to ensure qualitative education and a better future for students,' said the chief minister. He added that Una district has become the first solar-powered district in the state. Solar power projects of 32 MW in Pekhubela, 5 MW in Bhanjal, and 10 MW in Aghlaur have been completed in record time. Additionally, projects with a combined capacity of 163 MW are under construction, involving an investment of ₹500 crore. 'In the future, Una will not only meet its electricity demands but also supply power to other districts. Moreover, an ultra-modern Bulk Drug Park is coming up in Haroli, which will create job opportunities and significantly strengthen Una's industrial presence,' added Sukhu. Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri, in his address, said that ₹170 crore has been invested solely in water supply schemes in the Gagret Assembly Constituency. 'This will offer a permanent solution to drinking water and irrigation problems,' said Agnihotri.
