Official: Celtics sign No. 46 overall pick Amari Williams to two-way contract

Former Kentucky center Amari Williams, the 46th pick in the 2025 NBA draft, signed a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics on Friday, the team announced. Williams averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 blocks on 56.1% shooting from the field in 36 appearances with the Wildcats. He is one of two players in SEC history with at least 375 points, 300 rebounds, 100 assists, 40 blocks and 20 steals in a single season. The 7-footer played the first four years of college at Drexel, becoming the first player to be named CAA Defensive Player of the Year in three straight seasons. He led the conference in block shots three years in a row and left ranked fifth all-time in program history in swats (186). Williams logged four appearances with the Celtics in the NBA Summer League, averaging 6.2 points, five rebounds and 1.8 assists on 44.4% shooting from the field. He debuted with nine points, three rebounds and two blocked shots on July 11. The 23-year-old will split his time next season between the NBA and the Maine Celtics in the G League. He is eligible to be active for up to 50 games in the NBA and will earn $636,435, which is equal to 50% of the minimum salary applicable to a player with zero years of service. Williams will now have the chance to begin his career with the Celtics and develop within the organization. He is the third player signed to a two-way contract, along with RJ Luis and Max Shulga.

The Boston Celtics have signed big man Amari Williams to a two way contract

The Boston Celtics have signed former University of Kentucky big man Amari Williams to a two way contract, per a release circulated by the team on Friday (Aug. 15). The Celtics elected to take Williams with the No. 46 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, but a trade made by the team's front office to move veteran forward Georges Niang (and two second round draft picks) into the Utah Jazz' cap space in return for signed two way wing RJ Luis Jr. raised questions about Boston's plans for Williams with forward Miles Norris already under contract along with fellow 2025 second round pick Max Shulga. The Celtics ultimately decided to move on from Norris, and now Williams officially moves into the two way slot he vacated. "The Nottingham, England, native started in all 36 contests in 2024-25 for the Wildcats, posting averages of 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks in 22.8 minutes per game," writes the Celtics. Per Boston's official policy, terms of the signing were not disclosed, but barring unforeseen developments, it appears Williams will be suiting up for Boston for at least next season, if not longer. Yankees Urged To Cut Ties With Struggling $8.6M All-Star Before Postseason

The New York Yankees have struggled lately, and a lot of the blame has been placed on manager Aaron Boone and reliever Devin Williams. Williams has lost games for the Yankees, but Boone continues to trust him. With the postseason quickly approaching, the Yankees have some big decisions to make. Adam Weinrib of Yanks Go Yard recently urged the Yankees to place Williams on waivers ahead of the postseason. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 09: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees delivers a pitch against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on April 09, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - APRIL 09: Devin Williams #38 of the New York Yankees delivers a pitch against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on April 09, 2025 in Detroit, Michigan."The Yankees, for very good reason, would rather not embolden Williams' confidence and send him somewhere he can eventually bite them," Weinrib wrote. "They're also hanging onto a playoff spot for dear life, and it's really hard to consider postseason roster implications right now. "But ... who would you rather want taking October reps? Yerry de los Santos, or Devin Williams? A head-to-head with Loáisiga is probably a faceoff that Williams wins, but de los Santos, the Yankees' expert long man? Not so sure. Crazy, but not so sure. The waiver wire could get very spicy around the start of next month." Cutting ties with Williams would be ludicrous for the Yankees. He's struggled this year. It's by far the worst season of his career. He shouldn't be the closer in New York. All of these are correct. But Williams would be the best eighth-inning man in any bullpen in baseball. There's a reason that if the Yankees were to place him on waivers, nearly every contending team would try to scoop him up. If the Yankees don't want to use him as the closer, that makes sense, but he needs to be a piece of the bullpen if the team wants to win the World Series. He could provide a lot of use in the sixth or seventh inning of postseason games. More MLB: Dodgers Blockbuster? MLB Insider Floats Shocking Waiver Candidate In LA
