Police dismantle major drug syndicate in Sibu
SIBU: Police have dismantled a major drug trafficking syndicate operating in Sibu for nearly a decade, seizing drugs and assets totalling RM8.5mil.
This is the largest in Sarawak's history.
Two suspects, a 52-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, believed to be the masterminds, were arrested during the raids.
"The raids were conducted on June 12 and 13 at three locations: a shop lot in Pusat Pedada and two terrace houses in Lorong Permai Jaya, following intelligence gathered on the syndicate's activities," said Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata on Monday (June 16).
Mancha said police seized drugs worth an estimated RM532,934.40, including 7,086.7 grams of syabu (methamphetamine), 2,078.9 grams of ketamine, and 2,022.6 grams of Erimin 5 pills.
'The total amount of drugs seized is enough to supply about 49,702 drug addicts,' Mancha said.
In addition to the narcotics, police confiscated high-value assets believed to be proceeds from the drug trade, valued at RM7,997,450. These include RM5,157,450 in cash, four gold bars, two gold chains, three Rolex watches, and luxury vehicles: a Lexus RX350F Sport, a Lexus ES250, and a Toyota Vios.
Police also seized various items used in the syndicate's operations, including bank cards, house keys, and drug packaging equipment.
According to Mancha, initial investigations revealed that the duo had been running the operation since 2015, obtaining drug supplies from Peninsular Malaysia via courier services and distributing them in Sibu.
"Both suspects tested negative for drug use and have no prior criminal records. They are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with no less than 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed," he explained.
The suspects have been remanded for seven days from June 13 to 20 to assist with investigations.
Mancha added that police are actively pursuing other syndicate members still at large to completely dismantle the network.
He emphasised the commitment of the police, particularly the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, to fighting drug-related crime, one of the nation's most serious threats. The public is urged to report any drug-related activity via the JSJN hotline at 012-2087222.

[UPDATED] MACC to charge Works Department director in graft case
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is set to charge a Works Department director tomorrow over alleged bribery involving hundreds of thousands of ringgit. MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said today that the case was investigated by the commission's Special Operations Division and is now complete. "We expect to charge the director tomorrow at the Special Corruption Sessions Court in Jalan Duta," he said at MACC Headquarters. As part of the investigation, the MACC has frozen 95 bank accounts, comprising 79 belonging to individuals and 16 linked to companies, with a total value of RM613 million. The commission has also seized properties, vehicles, and cash believed to be connected to the case. In May, the MACC remanded six individuals, including two senior civil servants with the title 'Datuk' and an engineer from a government department, for allegedly receiving bribes in connection with development and maintenance contract awards since 2021. According to a source, initial investigations revealed that the two main suspects, who hold the positions of director and engineer at a government department, had received approximately RM115,000 from middlemen in the form of cash, home renovation payments, and mobile phones.

Court rejects lorry driver guilty plea over assault due to photo discrepancy
GEORGE TOWN: The magistrate's court here today rejected a guilty plea by an assistant lorry driver charged with assaulting a policeman at the state police contingent headquarters, after the accused failed to identify several photographs related to the incident. S.R. Aingaran, 19, had earlier pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury to Ahmad Jabarul Yahya Arif, 31, by punching him in the cheek and biting his chest during an incident at the guard post of the headquarters around 9.40pm on Sunday. However, magistrate Nurul Suhaila Baharin declined to accept the plea after Aingaran was unable to recognise some of the images presented in court. "The court does not accept your guilty plea as you failed to identify several photographs presented to you," she said. The charge, framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. The court fixed July 21 for mention and for the accused to appoint legal representation, as well as for document submission. Deputy public prosecutor Lau Shavin proposed bail at RM5,000, but S. Bommy, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation, appealed for a lower sum, citing the accused's financial situation. "My client is only 19 years old and earns RM1,800 a month as an assistant lorry driver," she said. The court subsequently set bail at RM3,000 with one surety, and warned the accused and his family against contacting or harassing the victim. "If any complaint is received, the court will revoke the bail," the magistrate said. It was earlier reported that two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman near the main gate of the state police headquarters on suspicion of being intoxicated. The incident reportedly occurred after the 30-year-old policeman conducted an initial check and brought the duo into the guard post for further inspection. Inside, they allegedly became aggressive, punching the officer and biting his chest, while also hurling verbal abuse.

Syed Saddiq acquitted of CBT, misappropriation, money laundering charges
Published on: Wednesday, June 25, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 25, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: The Court of Appeal in Putrajaya on Wednesday acquitted and discharged Syed Saddiq Syed (centre) of four charges involving criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to funds from Armada. - Bernama PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal here today acquitted and discharged Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman of four charges involving criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to funds from Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada). A three-member bench comprising Justices Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin allowed Syed Saddiq's appeal to overturn his conviction and sentence of seven years' jail, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine imposed by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Nov 9, 2023. 'We find that the prosecution failed to prove the abetment charge against the appellant (Syed Saddiq). The evidence presented was not credible and did not support the misappropriation charge under Section 403. Additionally, the money laundering charges under AMLA could not be sustained. 'Therefore, the appellant is acquitted and discharged of all charges,' said Justice Noorin, who read out the unanimous decision. Syed Saddiq, 32, had been accused of abetting Armada's former assistant treasurer, Rafiq Hakim Razali, in committing criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million. The alleged offence was said to have occurred at CIMB Bank Berhad, Menara CIMB KL Sentral, on March 6, 2020, under Section 406 of the Penal Code. For the second charge, he was accused of misappropriating RM120,000 from the Maybank Islamic Berhad account of Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise by instructing Rafiq Hakim to dispose of the funds. Advertisement The act was alleged to have taken place at Malayan Banking Berhad, Taman Pandan Jaya, between April 8 and 21, 2018, under Section 403 of the Penal Code. Additionally, Syed Saddiq faced two charges of money laundering involving the transfer of RM50,000 each from his Maybank Islamic account to his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account. These transactions, allegedly proceeds of unlawful activities, were said to have occurred at a bank in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, on June 16 and 19, 2018. The money laundering charges were brought under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, which provides for a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to five times the amount involved, upon conviction. Justice Noorin said the charge of criminal breach of trust (CBT) could not stand, as it was undisputed that the RM1 million withdrawn was used for Armada's programmes and not misappropriated. She added that Syed Saddiq could not be found guilty of abetment when the primary offence itself failed to meet the elements required under Section 405 of the Penal Code. 'The central question is whether the appellant's alleged instruction to the 13th prosecution witness (PW13), Rafiq Hakim Razali, to withdraw the RM1 million amounted to abetment of CBT. 'In our view, directing someone to withdraw funds cannot be equated with 'disposal' or 'conversion' as defined under Section 405. 'There must be actual misappropriation. In this case, there is no evidence the appellant benefited personally from the funds, which were entirely used for Armada's activities,' she said. Regarding the RM120,000 misappropriation charge, Justice Noorin said the funds were raised for the appellant's election campaign and, therefore, essentially belonged to him 'PW13 never stated the RM120,000 belonged to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise (ABBE). He merely said the funds were deposited into an account under ABBE's name. 'There is no evidence showing that the money belonged to ABBE or Armada. The prosecution also failed to prove that the account was used to receive donations meant for the organisation, rather than to support the appellant's campaign,' she added. Before adjourning proceedings, presiding judge Justice Ahmad Zaidi clarified that the decision was based solely on the appeal records and was not influenced by external views, including public opinion or social media comments. Present in court were defence counsels Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, representing Syed Saddiq, and deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
