38 trains in Tamil Nadu to get additional stoppages from Aug 18: Union Minister

As many as 38 trains running across Tamil Nadu will have additional stoppages from August 18 based on public demand, Union Minister L Murugan said on Sunday.Talking to reporters here, Murugan also said the Centre has sanctioned about Rs 10 lakh crore in the last 10 years to implement social welfare schemes including modernisation and expansion of national highways, airports and ports in Tamil Nadu.Murugan said he received petitions from the public demanding that express trains, superfast trains and passenger trains stop at additional railway stations in different parts of the state, and that he took the matter to the attention of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.Vaishnaw, who accepted the demands of railway passengers, issued the necessary orders for extra stoppage, the minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, said.The additional stoppages include Ambur for Chennai Central-Shivamogha Weekly Superfast Express. The Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express will stop at Gudiyatham and Vaniyambadi for two minutes each.Similarly, the Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express Train will stop at Irugur and Singanallur. This train will also stop at the above mentioned stations in the opposite direction and additionally at Melappalayam. The Puducherry-Kanniyakumari Express will stop at Valliyur for the convenience of passengers.Murugan further said the Central government has given Rs 6,626 crore for the state's railway projects in 2025-26.During the Congress-led UPA regime between 2009-2014, this allocation was Rs 879 crore, he said.Under the Amrit Bharat Railway Stations Scheme , work was being carried out at fast pace to upgrade 77 railway stations in Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs 2,948 crore.Under this scheme, Rs 800 crore has been allocated for the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore Railway Station and work is being carried out. Similarly, the reconstruction work of Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Katpadi and Salem railway stations is underway in full swing, a press release quoted him as saying.Murugan said work of laying new tracks for a distance of 2,587 kilometers was underway at an estimated cost of Rs 33,467 crore, and 10 new railway lines, 3 broad gauge railway lines and 9 double-track lines are being constructed.Work on the Maduravoyal-Chennai Harbour elevated project was also progressing at 'full speed,' it quoted him as saying.

PM inaugurates ₹2,000 crore highway projects for Haryana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major national highway projects worth ₹2,000 crore which will directly benefit Haryana. These are construction of two new four-lane connectivity roads to Sonepat and Bahadurgarh under the Urban Extension Road-2 project. Modi also inaugurated the Dwarka Expressway and UER-2 projects connecting Delhi and Haryana at a total cost of about ₹11,000 crore, out of which projects worth ₹2,000 crore will directly benefit Haryana, an official spokesperson said. The chief minister said that Haryana, being the industrial and agricultural hub of northern India, would be the biggest beneficiary of these projects. 'These key projects will not only boost exports, imports and investments by ensuring direct connectivity from Kundli, Sonepat, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram and Manesar to Delhi airport, but will also provide relief from traffic congestion in the region,' Saini said. Saini said that the Centre is creating an extensive network of roadways, railways and airways connectivity. Listing out the projects which will be to Haryana's advantage, Saini named the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, Rail Coach Repair Factory, Kundli-Manesar-Palwal and Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressways, Gurugram-Sikanderpur and Faridabad-Ballabhgarh Metro Links, the country's first elevated railway track in Rohtak, the Rohtak-Meham-Hansi railway line, the National Cancer Institute at AIIMS Jhajjar, and AIIMS in Rewari. He said that Haryana recently received the gift of a metro corridor from Rithala to Kundli. The chief minister also said that these initiatives will give a new impetus to investment, employment and industrial development in the state, further strengthening Haryana's contribution to the national economy.

IAF Heritage Museum loses altitude as visitor inflow dips
Chandigarh: The initial burst of enthusiasm about the Indian Air Force Heritage Museum in the Tricity seems to be waning. The dedicated Air Force heritage centre launched by Union defence minister Rajnath Singh with much fanfare in May, 2023, has suffered a significant dip in footfall since its inception. Its expansion plan has also remained restricted to paper for over one year. "Initially, Indian Air Force and Chandigarh administration were in talks to expand the IAF Heritage Museum to start its second phase. Preparation of an MoU was discussed and both parties prepared points for the same. However, there has been no progress for more than one year," sources in the Chandigarh administration revealed. Despite the tourist centre boasting of modern paraphernalia like virtual and augmented reality, holograms, simulators, and electromechanical enclosures, the flow of visitors has gone down. Sources in the administration said that visitors from the Tricity thronged the IAF Heritage Museum initially but the inflow started thinning down. Now, most of the visitors are people from outside the Tricity. As per records of the Chandigarh administration, 58,273 people visited the Air Force Museum in the eight months from its inception on May 8, 2023 to December, 2023. According to records, Chandigarh administration earned significant revenue from the IAF Heritage Museum. From its launch in May 2023 to the end of July 2025, the authority earned over Rs 1.1 crore, including both entry fee of visitors as well as immersive experiences. According to senior officials at the DGP headquarters, superintendent of police (Sambhal) Krishna Kumar was honoured with the Exemplary Service Medal for spearheading a crackdown on Rs 100 crore interstate insurance fraud racket, active for over a decade. Under his leadership, police arrested 68 accused in 17 cases, exposed fraudulent tractor financing across several states, and unearthed the gang's involvement in murders and Aadhaar manipulation. Deputy superintendent of police (STF) Pramesh Shukla was also awarded for his probe into a high-profile case involving Jamaluddin alias Chhangur Shah alias Peer Baba. His investigation revealed a foreign-funded network driving forced religious conversions and demographic manipulation.
