Aberdeen discover Europa League play-off opponents as Dons face tricky tie

IT's been a tough start to the season for Aberdeen as Jimmy Thelin's men have lost BOTH of their opening games in the Premiership.
But it's only going to get trickier for the struggling Dons as in a few days time they will begin playing two games a week - with European football on the horizon.

The Pittodrie side are guaranteed European football up until Christmas and perhaps beyond then - IF they qualify for the Europa League instead of the Conference League.
Thelin and Aberdeen fans will know their exact fate by the end of the month - after their Europa League play-off tie over the next couple of weeks.
And now the Dons' path to Uefa's second tier competition has become a little clearer - as they now know which club stands in their way.
The Dons knew they would face one of two teams in the play-off round after the draw was made earlier this month.
In terms of their European away day, Aberdeen fans were getting set to book a trip to either Romania or Kosovo, with FCSB battling it out with Drita in the third qualifying round.
The winner of that tie would then travel to Scotland to face the Dons in the Granite City on Thursday, August 21, with the return leg pencilled in for the following Thursday, August 28.
The third round tie was still very much up in the air ahead of tonight's second leg following last week's thrilling first leg, which ended in a 3-2 win for FCSB - who were at home.
Now the tie has finally been settled following another win for FCSB in Kosovo - with Juri Cisotti and David Mirulescu scoring early doors to put the tie to bed.
Drita did pull one back in the second half through Veton Tusha but it proved to be too little, too late as FCSB ran out 3-1 winners on the night in the end following a late goal from Dennis Politic.
It will be the second time in a year the Romanian side visit Scotland as they took on Rangers in the Europa League last season.
Aberdeen fans react to historic Scottish Cup win
That was a comfortable win for the Light Blues - managed by Philippe Clement - as they came out on top in a 4-0 win at Ibrox.
Aberdeen were guaranteed European football this season after they pipped Hibs to the coveted Europa League play-off spot by stunning Celtic in the Scottish Cup final in May.
The Easter Road club would have been in this position instead for finishing third in the league IF Brendan Rodgers' men came out on top at Hampden.

Ruben Amorim reveals alternative if Man Utd don't sign Carlos Baleba
Ruben Amorim has named Mason Mount as an option in central midfield if Manchester United fail to strengthen in the middle of the park. United have rebuilt their attack with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko arriving at Old Trafford this summer, along with young talent Diego Leon at left-back. But issues remain unresolved in midfield – an area of the pitch that caused United major problems last season. Questions remain over Casemiro's ability to withstand the pace of the Premier League after another draining campaign last term while Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have seldom shown promise as a midfield duo. Toby Collyer has been given the green light to join West Brom on loan with Bruno Fernandes expected to get more games in a deeper role. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. United are eager to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton but could be priced out of a move this summer. The Seagulls value the 21-year-old at £100million and while the midfielder is thought to be keen on the move, any deal may have to wait until this time next year. While Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand has been linked, there does not appear to a genuine alternative to Baleba in mind. In any case, Amorim is prepared to make do with what he has at his disposal – viewing Mount as another option. 'I'm really happy with our players, they are working really well, we have different players for that position, so we are prepared to win any game with our players,' Amorim told a press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday. 'Maybe Mason Mount is a player that can play in that position if we want something different. 'But then we are going to find out during the season. But we have players to cope and win games in the Premier League.' More Trending Mount has largely operated in an attacking midfield role for Chelsea, England and United. Amorim is a huge admirer of the 26-year-old who has endured an injury-hit spell in Manchester since arriving from Stamford Bridge in 2024. Mount picked up a hamstring injury early on in Amorim's tenue last year but returned late in the campaign, scoring twice in the Europa League semi-final win over Athletic Club. Rangers boss Russell Martin: 'We're turning a tanker around'
Rangers head coach Russell Martin has faith that his work with the team will take them in the right direction after a slow start in the Premiership, but says the job is like 'turning a tanker'. Martin guided his side into the Champions League play-offs this week with victory over Viktoria Plzen over two legs, setting up a tie with Club Brugge that could see Rangers book a place in the elite competition. However, Premiership draws with Motherwell and Dundee have meant a poor start to the domestic season, with both team and manager coming in for heavy criticism. Martin accepts that the job comes with intense scrutiny but is calm and confident that things will improve and deliver the success he wants. But he said a conversation with a member of staff had helped illustrate the scale of the task he believes he has taken on at Ibrox. 'I think there's been an energy around this place for a while that isn't, I'm talking inside, outside, it's just been a lot of disappointment and a lot of frustration and a lot of criticism to the players, to the club,' the head coach said 'Everyone has an opinion; everyone's entitled to one. So whilst I'm here, whilst we are here, our job is to really focus on what we can affect and what we can impact. 'If we do our jobs to the best of our ability in here and focus on the work and being better and having really, really high standards that this club should stand for, then I just don't see how it doesn't go in the right direction. 'One of the maintenance guys here this week said, 'We're turning a tanker around, gaffer, and it will just take some time, but when we get it going…' and I thought it was a perfect analogy. 'He's a great guy. He was here when I was here before. I don't want to embarrass him, but honestly, when he said that, I was like, 'No, you're right.' 'We just qualified for the Champions League [play-off]. 'I spoke to the staff on Sunday after Dundee because everyone here supports the club and they really feel things. 'But our job in here is to try and just work and not let the outside noise affect how we work. It just can't.' Martin instead wants to focus on the process of bedding in the new-look squad and getting everyone to understand and execute his vision for the team's style. 'I think [we need to be] be really consistent in the process here,' he said. 'We need to be really consistent in our behavior, be really consistent in what we're asking them to do. 'And then that consistency will show up on the pitch. I've been in this situation at every club we've been at. 'This is why I can sit here calmly and tell you what I think is going to happen next. 'We just have to trust the work and trust each other. And I've spoken to the players relentlessly about that. 'And I can see what's coming with them, how they're growing into the culture we're trying to build, how they're adapting to it, and that's why I'm excited about what's going to come.' After the pressures of Europe, Martin now turns his attention to domestic cup competition, with the Premier Sports Cup tie against Alloa on Saturday. He had a positive update on the injury front, with reassuring news about Cyriel Dessers and a return for other players. 'Cyriel is not as bad as everyone feared,' he said. 'Tomorrow will be too early, but we're really hopeful he can be involved on Tuesday. 'I think everyone feared the worst with the way he went off. 'There was a small issue, but it's nowhere near as big as it could have been, so it was good. A bit stiff and a bit sore still, but we will work hard to give him every chance to be fit for Tuesday.' Max Aarons will return to the squad after injury, while Thelo Aasgard and Hamza Igamane are in contention to play after a spell on the sidelines. New signing Mikey Moore, who joined on loan from Spurs, is also available, giving Martin some big selection decisions. 'It is a nice position to be in,' he said. 'We'll see how many minutes they'll get on the pitch, but they'll all be back involved.' 'We have to be intelligent' - can Emery's Villa outwit big spenders?
At Unai Emery's unveiling, the Aston Villa manager stated his desire to win trophies. Almost three years later he is still waiting and the task is getting that it worries the head coach."If we are complaining about working hard, we are not in the right way," Emery tells BBC have already learned quickly under Emery how to outthink rival teams, and the former Villarreal boss believes the club still rank behind seven others when it comes to financial upset the order in 2023-24 to qualify for the Champions League, and on the final day last season were in the top-five hunt until a controversial defeat at Manchester United forced them to settle for the Europa has raised standards and expectations at Villa Park, having succeeded Steven Gerrard in October 2022 when the team sat 14th and only three points above the Premier League relegation Villa Park opener against Newcastle - the team who beat Villa to the final Champions League spot in May - represents a tough start but the sort Emery will season's implosion in the FA Cup semi-final to Crystal Palace stung more than most, especially after the Europa Conference League semi-final defeat to Olympiakos in 2024.A thrilling Champions League quarter-final defeat to Paris St-Germain in April saw Villa compete with the best, but while they went close it was not close gap is growing, especially with the club's financial limitations. Captain John McGinn has bemoaned the gulf between Villa and the 'big six', and Emery is still painting Villa as the underdog."We are not with the same capacity like Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Manchester City or Chelsea or Arsenal, but we have our power and we have to be positive and work hard with our capacity to be with them," says Emery."At the beginning they have the capacity to get something more."We are talking about a lot of teams who are spending a lot of money, but we are going to focus on ourselves. We are getting the belief, of course; we have to believe in our sporting objective through our capacity."You have to be intelligent against other teams who have more options than us to be in the top seven. We must be proud how we are building and being competitive."Emery - a four-time Europa League winner - is Villa's biggest his leadership they have have finished seventh, fourth and sixth, threatening to consistently crack the top five."To be in the Premier League in the position we are finishing in the last three years is fantastic," Emery says."We are thinking about how we did last year and trying to learn and avoid some mistakes we made."We were not being a competitive team like I want for one part of the season, mostly the first part. I will have to avoid it and try to be consistent."How we did the second part was amazing. We finished in the last 20 matches maybe second or third in the table. This is something we have to link in the season." Financial restrictions affect spending Emery references mistakes and he is right to say Villa need to find their consistent best they avoid defeat against Newcastle, they will have gone a calendar year unbeaten at home in the Premier for all their Villa Park success, they lost nine times on the road in the league last season - leaving them 11th in that particular form table, results which ultimately cost them a Champions League also conceded 51 times, and on that basis they had the worst-performing defence in the top Brighton and Brentford shipped more among teams in the top beat Villa to fifth on goal difference and it was not close, with the Magpies 14 better distracted by Alexander Isak's saga this summer, Newcastle have added winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, external and defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan for close to a combined £ is something Villa cannot compete with and they were fined €11million [£9.5m] by UEFA in July having been found to have a squad cost ratio above 80 per cent for 2024. That refers to the proportion of income that is paid out in reported losses of £85.4m for 2023-24 and £119.6m for 2022-23, and failure to reach the Champions League cost is one of the reasons spending has been limited, with striker Evann Guessand at £30m the biggest arrival ahead of the new graduate Jacob Ramsey is on the verge of joining Newcastle for £40m - banking Villa pure all this, Emery is content."Even selling some important players and not spending a lot of money like other teams are doing, I'm so happy how we are doing in the transfer window," he says at Villa's Bodymoor Heath training base."Of course Jacob Ramsey is leaving, but we have to accept it. If he is leaving it's a very good deal for the club, for the player and as a team. It's my responsibility as a manager to find a solution to get our performance through the players we have."Villa fended off interest from Everton in influential skipper Scotland international is happy and remains a key lieutenant for after Ramsey's exit there are likely to be other departures, including winger Leon Bailey who has flattered to deceive since a £25m move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. Villa have not won a trophy for 29 years, since lifting the 1996 League Cup under Brian Little.A 2015 FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal and the 2010 League Cup final loss to Manchester United are the closest they have come has been a winner, with his European titles and a Ligue 1 triumph with Paris St-Germain, and Villa fans still believe he is the key to success."There's always that concern in the sense of everyone's strengthened, teams are going to be more competitive - Tottenham, Manchester United," says Mo Razzaq, chair of Aston Villa's Supporters' Trust."You expect them to be a lot more stronger. Brighton, Brentford... it'll be interesting how they will do with a new manager."You've probably got, again, seven or eight teams trying to compete for three or four places so it can be very competitive."We know in Unai Emery we will be set up well, so it's just a case of having faith in the management and maybe we've got a bit of a blessing of being in the Europa compared to the Champions League."That's another tough competition, but we know Unai's got the pedigree, he knows the competition. We expect to compete well on all fronts, but [a trophy] is what's missing."We came close last season and Emery has done really well so far, but it's just that icing on the cake."
