
Buying a house in your 40s or 50s: Which is the smarter financial move?
A Reddit post by a 53-year-old who lost his job has sparked discussion about the ideal time to buy a home. He shared that he purchased a ₹2 crore house seven years ago without taking a loan. Now, even after losing his job, he lives stress-free by relying on a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) to cover his expenses.
His advice: don't rush into homeownership in your early 40s. Instead, take calculated risks, explore better career opportunities, and focus on building a solid financial foundation through investments. 'There's no need to hurry. Don't fall for FOMO,' he cautioned.
The Reddit user compared his situation to a friend who bought a home 15 years ago and is still paying EMIs. His advice to younger people is to focus on saving, investing, and taking career risks instead of rushing to buy a house too early out of fear of missing out.
"Don't rush into buying a house in your early 40s. Take risks, explore better job opportunities, and focus on investing as much as you can. Once you've built a strong financial base, then consider buying a home," the post said.
"Life is meant to be enjoyed, not just spent repaying EMIs and loans. Yes, owning a home is important, but there's no need to hurry. Don't fall into the trap of FOMO," the post read.
Others, however, are of the opinion that by the time you're 55, a home is more for your children than for yourself.

Reddit users agree that building a financial corpus is crucial when planning to buy a home. One user shared that they bought their first flat at 30 and repaid the loan within five years. They later purchased a second flat at 37 and are now working to clear that loan within two years. 'I'm earning decent rental income from my first property,' the user noted, emphasizing how early investments can yield long-term financial benefits.
Another user highlighted that the value of homeownership goes beyond just utility. 'What about the emotional and legacy value a home provides?' they asked. For those who can afford it or are willing to take little risk, they argued, buying a home is worth it. 'At 55, the house is for your kids, not for yourself,' they said.

Financial advisors say that the decision to buy a home depends on several personal and financial factors. 'People buy homes in their 30s or 40s, but some do it even in their late 50s. A lot depends on when you settle down, get married, and have children,' Suresh Sadagopan, a financial advisor, said.
Family needs and the desire for stability, especially related to children's education, often influence the timing of a home purchase. Buying a home too early in one's career can create challenges. Limited budgets may force buyers to settle for smaller homes or locations far from the city centre, which may not be ideal in the long term.
'EMI planning is also critical,' Sadagopan advised. If both partners are earning and sharing the EMI, it works well. But in cases where the loan burden is high, say, for a ₹2.5 crore property where the couple contributes ₹50 lakh from savings and pays ₹70,000–90,000 each per month, it can become risky.
'If one person loses their job, the pressure becomes immense,' he said. Expensive properties also come with additional costs like stamp duty, registration, furnishing, and brokerage, which often are not recoverable.
He advised homebuyers to exercise caution, especially when making big-ticket purchases. 'Don't try to do everything at once. You can furnish your home gradually over two to three years,' he said.
He outlined two common approaches to homebuying. One involves purchasing an entry-level home early and upgrading later by building equity; the other is to wait, save diligently, and buy a dream home in one go. 'For those who struggle with financial discipline, buying early and leveraging equity for an upgrade later may be the smarter choice,' Sadagopan added.

Do you even realise how much your marriage delayed the work? Because of your father's situation and the leave you took, my timeline commitment couldn't be fulfilled." Stunned by the statement, he hit back: 'Please watch what you're saying and think before you speak. Choose your next words carefully.' The techie revealed he resigned soon after, and even in a tough job market, he said that he knew he had taken the right call. His post has resonated with many in the Indian tech space. "I know how it is to be under a toxic person. You stood up for yourself, and we are proud of that. And one day you will be glad that you did. You will surely get into some good company," said one of them. Another wrote, "Having worked in corporate for years, I don't even know how such people continue to exist. Going back on commitment for agreed upon raise is very common, but it would be very rare for someone to even say a fraction of what your manager told you regarding your father's situation and your marriage."

The Alphabet-owned video platform has been cracking down on viewers who continue to use ad blockers on its site, all because they must submit to the demands of major tech companies eager for your money. If you have an ad blocker extension turned on, YouTube no longer allows playback until you disable it. In its current iteration, YouTube is mostly successful in ensuring that free users can't get away with using ad blockers. Now, the company has added another layer of defence against ad blockers. According to many Reddit users, popular workarounds like uBlock Origin and AdBlock are no longer effective against YouTube ads. That means users are now seeing warnings to stop using ad blockers. For some who rely on these services, the YouTube page appears completely blank. Naturally, this has led to an uproar against Google for its strong stance against ad blockers. Even if we acknowledge that ads help creators generate revenue from their videos, it's clear that Google is ultimately looking out for its own interests. As always, though, users will likely devise new ways to bypass these restrictions. We're at an impasse: users don't want to pay for Premium, and YouTube doesn't want anyone to bypass ads. Govt proposes mandatory online payment system for copyright licence fees
New Delhi: The Centre has proposed a key change to the copyright regime by making it mandatory for owners and licensors of literary works, musical works and sound recordings to set up an online mechanism for collection of licence fees, as per a notification issued by the commerce ministry on Thursday. The move is aimed at streamlining payments and improving transparency in the way royalties are collected and distributed, especially amid the growing reliance on digital modes of content consumption and public performance. Also read: Reddit says Anthropic used its community to train AI without permission, files lawsuit A notification in this regard has been issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on 5 June, seeking public comments on the draft Copyright (Amendment) Rules, 2025 within 30 days, possibly by 4 July. The draft rules insert a new provision—Rule 83(A)—in the Copyright Rules, 2013, requiring that 'all payments of such licence fee shall be processed exclusively through said online system," and explicitly barring any alternative mode of payment. Stakeholders have been given 30 days to submit their objections or suggestions. Any feedback received within this period will be duly examined by the central government before finalizing the rules, the ministry said. The proposal, once finalized, could change the way licensing entities, including copyright societies and aggregators, operate, potentially reducing disputes over manual transactions and non-transparent fee collection. Legal experts said that the amendment reflects a broader policy shift towards digital governance and accountability in the IP rights ecosystem. However, questions remain over the operational aspects—whether existing copyright societies will be required to revamp their systems or if the change targets individual right holders. India has seen a steady rise in content licensing for OTT platforms, radio broadcasters, live events, and public performances, making timely and transparent payments a long-standing demand of creators and music labels. On the proposed draft rule, a senior commerce ministry official said that the amendment was designed to 'facilitate efficient royalty flows and curb evasive practices." However, the draft rule does not currently specify the format or standards of the online mechanism, leaving room for further clarifications during the consultation process. 'IPRS welcomes this progressive move aimed at enhancing transparency and streamlining the copyright licensing process. We are pleased to share that IPRS implemented a fully online and digital licensing system nearly five years ago. Today, over 99.5% of our licensing fees for royalties are collected digitally, ensuring ease, accessibility, and transparency for users," said Rakesh Nigam, chief executive officer (CEO) of IPRS (Indian Performing Right Society), a collective rights management organization.
