Italian soccer coaches call for Israel to be suspended by UEFA and FIFA over Gaza war

Yahoo18 hours ago
FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — The Italian Soccer Coaches' Association is pushing for Israel to be suspended from international competition over the war in Gaza.
Ahead of Italy's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says 'Israel must stop. Soccer must also take action.'
The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian soccer federation, to be forwarded to European and world soccer's governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended.
'The AIAC Board of Directors unanimously believes that, given the daily massacres, which have also resulted in hundreds of deaths among managers, coaches, and athletes … it is legitimate, necessary, indeed a duty, to place at the center of federation talks the request, to be submitted to UEFA and FIFA, for the temporary exclusion of Israel from sporting competitions,' the letter concludes.
'Because the pain of the past cannot cloud anyone's conscience and humanity.'
Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14.
'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said.
The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium.
Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month.
'The world is in flames. Many people like the Palestinians are suffering,' AIAC vice president Francesco Perondi said. 'Indifference is unacceptable.'

'Chelsea are expecting' – Sky Sports reporter shares interesting update on Nicolas Jackson

The future of Nicolas Jackson will be resolved when it becomes clear if Alexander Isak is staying at Newcastle or not according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol. Jackson is expected to leave Chelsea before the end of the window, and he's dropped down the pecking order following the arrival of both Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer. The 24-year-old wasn't part of the squad for either of the pre-season games against Bayer Leverkusen or AC Milan, and it seems unlikely he'll be involved on Friday night against West Ham. Nicolas Jackson attracting interest from up to six clubs Chelsea reportedly value Jackson at £80m, but clubs are said to believe that price can be negotiated down, whilst it's hard to see the Blues being able to get that fee. Jackson is still training with the first team, and hasn't been sent to the 'bomb' squad like other players Chelsea are looking to move on. Jackson is attracting interest from as many as six clubs. (Photo by Dave Jones / Getty) Aston Villa are reportedly pushing hard to sign Jackson, but despite interest from several clubs no official offers have come in, and Solhekol has provided an update. He took to and said: 'Nicolas Jackson's future set to be resolved when it becomes clear whether Alexander Isak is staying at or leaving Newcastle United. 'There are up to six clubs interested in signing Jackson at the moment. Chelsea are expecting significant bids when there is more clarity about Isak's future. Chelsea set for a busy end to the window Jackson and Christopher Nkunku are the two major sales Chelsea are looking to make before the end of the window. Chelsea are now said to be open to a loan move for Jackson if the conditions are right, which may suit Italian clubs AC Milan and Juventus better. However, it's the opposite for Nkunku, with both Chelsea and the player wanting a permanent transfer, and there's said to be interest from RB Leipzig and Inter Milan, whilst Bayern Munich can reportedly only do a loan deal.

‘Hostage' Review: Rescuing Entertainment From Absurdity

Can a series be geopolitically preposterous and still be a bingeable romp? Sure, and there are plenty of examples, though not many as forthrightly crackpot and provocative as 'Hostage.' A crime thriller about an abduction, it's also about nations in straitjackets. Created by writer Matt Charman ('Bridge of Spies'), the five-part series begins with the U.K.'s National Health Service in a full-blown meltdown, one that is taking the prime minister with it: Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones, great at doing posh, proper and perplexed) is under siege by the opposition party because life-preserving medicines are in disastrously short supply. When she reaches out to allies in pharmaceutically flourishing France, she finds they have their own agenda: President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy, going full Catherine Deneuve) is facing a re-election battle and fierce anti-immigrant sentiment from her country's far right. She wants to place French troops on English soil to prevent refugee migration across the Channel. A collective 'Hello?' can be heard across the British Isles.
