Consumer body demands better facilities at Coimbatore Passport Seva Kendra
In a letter to the Regional Passport Officer, the group appreciated the staff's efficient service, but flagged the absence of a proper waiting hall, shelter, restrooms, and drinking water, forcing applicants to wait outdoors.
The absence of parking for visitors was highlighted as a pressing concern. Applicants are reportedly compelled to park on nearby roads, where vehicles are fined for unauthorised parking. The body recommended that the passport office coordinate with the police department to allow short-term parking for applicants without obstructing traffic flow.
Terming the location inconvenient for elderly applicants and those using public transport, the group suggested handling renewal and Tatkal cases at a central venue such as the Coimbatore Municipal Complex in Uppilipalayam while retaining PSK for new applications.
The body stressed that Coimbatore, as Tamil Nadu's second most important city, should have a passport facility with adequate amenities to ensure a dignified applicant experience

Does IRCTC levy additional charge on users for ticket bookings via UPI? Railway Minister responds
Indian Railways Ticket Booking, IRCTC Ticket Booking: Indian Railways (IR) is continuously working to make end-to-end travel more passenger-centric. Since a passenger's journey begins at the ticket booking stage, the national transporter has been implementing measures to simplify the process. In July, several changes have been introduced in the ticketing system, including revised Tatkal booking timings for agents and making Aadhaar verification mandatory for Tatkal ticket reservation. During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh asked Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw whether the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) levies additional charges on digital payments at the rate of Rs 10 for non-AC tickets and Rs 20 for AC tickets, when booked via UPI or other modes. He also questioned the rationale for levying such charges despite the government's push for promotion of cashless economy and usage of UPI. Responding to this, Vaishnaw said that has provided the facility to book reserved tickets online saving passengers from the trouble of going to reservation counters to book the tickets thus saving travel time and transportation costs. In a written statement on July 8, the Railway Minister added, 'IRCTC incurs substantial expenditure on providing online ticketing facility and in order to defray the cost incurred in maintenance, upgradation and expansion of ticketing infrastructure, a very nominal convenience fee is levied by IRCTC.' He also stated that the online ticket booking facility provided by IRCTC is one of the most passenger friendly initiatives of Indian Railways. 'At present about 87% of the reserved tickets are booked online,' the minister noted. Earlier this year, the IRCTC deactivated over 2.5 crore user IDs to curb malpractices in ticket booking system. 'With a view to curb malpractices in ticket booking system, IRCTC has recently deactivated over 2.5 crore user ids, as their credentials were found to be suspicious during extensive data point analysis,' Vaishnaw said. Indian Railways has made some big changes to make train ticket booking easier, especially for Tatkal tickets. These new rules started from July 1, 2025. Now, only passengers who have Aadhaar-verified IRCTC accounts can book Tatkal tickets. This means your IRCTC account must be linked to your Aadhaar card to book tickets under the Tatkal scheme. IRCTC and railway authorities have confirmed that Aadhaar verification is compulsory solely for Tatkal ticket reservations. 'Those who haven't linked their Aadhaar can continue booking standard train tickets via the IRCTC portal or mobile app,' an official stated. What did MPs ask in Parliament about Tatkal ticket booking? During the Monsoon Session, 11 members of the Rajya Sabha sought clarification from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw whether Aadhaar-based authentication would be mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings and whether passengers with Aadhaar-linked IRCTC accounts would receive booking priority. They also questioned how these measures would help curb misuse of Tatkal tickets by agents and touts. Railway Minister's clarification on Tatkal ticket booking? The minister confirmed that only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile app and agents are not allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes after bookings open.
