
Record fifth selection for Fourways sprint rower to represent SA at World Sprint Championships
'I honestly wasn't expecting to be selected this year,' said Klopper. 'I've just moved into a new age group (U23), and with the transition to university life at the University of Cape Town, there were a lot of changes and challenges to navigate.
'I set realistic expectations for myself, going into this year's national trials. When the team selection was announced, I was incredibly surprised and proud to have qualified for the national team again. It's a huge honour to represent my country for the fifth time. Preparation will involve consistent training on the water, complemented by regular gym sessions.'

He said, heading into this year's world championships, he has set more realistic expectations for himself, especially since he is now competing against athletes who are several years older. 'My main goal is to gain valuable race experience, give it my all, and most importantly, enjoy the process.'
His schedule keeps him busy as a bee, but he finds way to manoeuvre. 'A typical training week is carefully balanced around my demanding university schedule. I usually start my mornings with a gym session, or a run, before heading to campus. Once classes are done for the day, I head to the water for a 90-minute to two-hour training session. I aim to train five to six days a week.
'Over the years, my training routine has evolved to include more cross-training and interval sessions, tailored specifically to my sprinting requirements, rather than focusing solely on time in the boat.'

When asked about specific techniques or strategies he focuses on to gain a competitive edge in sprint canoeing, he said his approach has always been to focus on enjoying what he's doing, and to compete in the events that excite him most. 'I believe that when you're passionate about something, and commit fully to the process, the results will naturally follow. I take the time to plan and structure each day and week carefully to ensure I can manage everything. During the week, my primary focus is on academics, attending classes, and fitting in my training.
'I make sure to take a rest day over the weekend to recharge, relax, and spend quality time with my family. To any young athlete out there: Always enjoy and have fun with what you're doing. Stay committed, never give up, and just keep pushing forward… No matter what.'

Mount Edgecombe resident completes Amashova on ElliptiGO
MOUNT Edgecombe resident Gords Reid has completed several Amashova Durban Classic races on various modes of bike, and on Sunday he completed the 65km race on an ElliptiGO. He has cycled the iconic race on an ice cream bike, MTB bike, in a cow suit, on a BMX, on a handcycle, as well as on a tandem bicycle with his daughters Amy and Erin. Reid completed the race in what marks a busy period for the local resident, who describes himself as an 'average athlete doing extraordinary things'. Also read: Durban North resident shapes bodyboarding journey 'It was easier than running but tougher than cycling, having said that it was a beautiful sunny day after two years of battling heavy rain at the Amashova. This is just an iconic race and to be able to complete it on an ElliptiGO was awesome. I think using this has impacted my fitness and it's been kind to my body after running the Comrades last month. For me it was just about finishing, injecting humour into the ride and uplifting other riders,' he said. The 52-year-old said he is already thinking about next year's event and what unique mode of transport to use. 'I've pretty much cycled everything I could but there are two other options. What I hope to complete the race on in the future is a unicycle and then in the future pipeline a Penny-farthing,' he said. He now turns his attention to this weekend's Run For Rangers 100km challenge at the Babanango Game Reserve. 'The aim is to raise funds for Project Rhino and for the rangers who protect the wildlife and this is something that appealed to me. I'm also planning on doing this year's Rhino Peak Challenge, so the common theme this year is wildlife. I really believe we need to get involved to save our wildlife for future generations,' he said. Cyclists conquer mammoth 100km route
AMANZIMTOTI Cycling Club riders rose to the challenge of the annual Amashova Durban Classic, one of South Africa's iconic road races, on July 20. The 100km route saw the cyclists start in Pietermaritzburg and finish along the Durban beachfront, testing their skill, stamina and endurance. Also read: Umgababa sailor launches sailing venture Chairman of the club, Barry Walker, said nine members of the club completed the event. Jannie Els claimed a second podium finish in the grand master category, showing that age is no barrier as long as there is dedicated training and commitment. Anton van der Merwe put in a solid ride to earn third place in masters, while one of the club's rising stars, Sikle Bester, grabbed third in the U23 category, also managing to finish as the 10th female rider overall. 'The race got underway in chilly, misty conditions in Pietermaritzburg, but temperatures began to rise as the riders made their way toward the coast. However, the final stretch into Durban came with a sting in the tail, a steady easterly headwind made the closing kilometers tough for even the strongest legs. A popular schoolboy rugby TikTok account has mocked the parents of Hilton College, who recently came under fire over their 'flashy' display of wealth at a recent derby day. The KwaZulu-Natal boarding school is the most expensive school in South Africa, with an annual tuition of close to half a million rand. On TikTok, the popular fitness and schoolboy rugby account @adafitfans took a jab at Hilton College's recent headlines.
