I worked in Maldives for years - there's one hidden gem island that's perfect for holidaying here on a budget
A Maldivian woman who spent almost 10 years working in the tourism sector at the hugely popular holiday destination has shared her hidden gems and budget tips.
The mother-of-one had worked tirelessly behind the scenes, including long hours while raising her 7-month-old daughter in the process.
Now 32, the native is happily married and has quit the tourism industry to launch a freelancer app that aims to 'connect Maldivians across the islands'.
She has also shared her top tips with keen travellers - including one hidden gem island that is perfect for those travelling on a budget.
Taking to web forum Reddit, in reply to another user's question about 'tricks for a budget trip', she explained: 'Travel to a local island and stay at a guesthouse.
'Some larger islands, like my home island Feydhoo in Addu City, are surrounded by beautiful, uninhabited islets perfect for day trips or even camping under the stars.
'You can walk to several of these nearby islands through the shallow sea ..it's peaceful, scenic, and completely unique.'
She added: 'Just search Feydhoo, Addu City on Google Maps and explore the surroundings.'
The mother-of-one spent the majority of her 20s working tirelessly behind-the-scenes in tourism at the hugely popular holiday destination
Feydhoo is one of the inhabited islands of Aaddu Atoll, which is formerly known as Seenu Atoll.
There is six districts of Addu City in total, the others being Hithadhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Maradhoo, Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo.
The poster was flooded with questions from users who quizzed her on day-to-day life in the Maldives, including transport and education.
She explained: 'Most Maldivians don't work directly in tourism , they live on local islands, separate from resort islands, where daily life is a mix of school runs, agricultural work, small businesses, community work, and friends or family gatherings.
'A typical day might start with morning tea and catching the news, followed by school or work, and evenings are often spent by the sea or at coffee shops, chatting with neighbours or playing sports (soccer and volleyball are pretty popular).'
When it comes to transport, the islands are served by flights and boats: 'Getting around between islands is by boat or domestic flights, depending on distance.
'On the islands themselves, people usually walk or use motorcycles (cars and pick ups on bigger islands).
'Schools are present on almost every inhabited island .. from preschool up to secondary. For higher education, many move to the capital, Malé, or even abroad.'
If the Maldives seems to be beyond budget, there's a European destination where you could get a similar feel for far less money.
TikTokers @theresortcouple recently posted a video where they say tourists will 'find the European Maldives in the cheapest country'.
They recommend Ksamil, an enchanting seaside village in Albania, as a budget alternative to the Maldives.
A holiday in Ksamil will cost a lot less than travelling to the Maldives.
According to Wise, the average cost of a meal at an inexpensive restaurant in Albania is just 1,000 lek/£8.50.
Meanwhile, a pint of domestic beer costs just 249 lek/2.13 and a cappuccino comes in at just 164 lek/£1.40.

Dear Richard Madeley: ‘I am totally terrified of getting naked with a potential new lover'
Dear Richard, I'm a divorced mother of two and I've been cautiously dipping a toe into the dating scene. Apart from a couple of comically horrific evenings, I have enjoyed meeting new people and feeling I was interesting, and might be attractive to mostly quite presentable men. However, I didn't feel any sort of spark until a few weeks ago, when I met someone I'd definitely like to take things further with. My problem is that while I look OK in clothes (I am small but curvy), I hate-hate- hate my naked body, and I am terrified of what will happen if a potential lover sees it. My husband left me for another woman, which is part of the problem, but not all of it: there is no getting around the fact that motherhood and time have both taken their toll. I am sure this man won't run out of the bedroom screaming, if it should come to that point, and perhaps he isn't such a magnificent specimen himself – who knows? But it's the prospect of that flicker of disappointment in the air and on his face that I can't bear; it will be all I can do not to run out of the room myself. How can I get over this hurdle and take this promising new relationship to the next level? – Amy, via Dear Amy, OK, let's take this to its logical conclusion. If you're never going to let a potential lover ever see your naked body, then you're never ever going to have sex again, are you? You might as well join the nearest convent. Look around you: at the couples shopping together at your local supermarket. Or having coffee at a pavement café. Or grabbing a bite at your favourite pub or restaurant. Let's assume roughly 50 per cent of them have reasonably regular sex together. Are they all perfect physical specimens – toned, chisel-jawed, luscious-lipped? Er… no. They'll look just like most of us do when we're undressed. Imperfect. Flawed. Probably slightly or even hugely embarrassed about it. Just like you. And, probably, your potential paramour. Relax, Amy. Sexual attraction is not, thank the stars, dependent on physical perfection. If it were, the human race would have died out one generation after Adam and Eve. If you do get to this stage with this chap, he'll probably be as nervous as you.

ID card scheme for French day-trippers to continue
Politicians have voted unanimously to continue a scheme which allows French day-trippers to visit Jersey using ID cards, rather than ID card scheme was introduced in 2023 when the number of day trip visitors dropped after Brexit because rules meant visitors needed the scheme being in place for two years, there has been uncertainty about its future due the UK introducing electronic travel authorisation for Sir Philip Bailhache, who brought forward the proposition, said "many French citizens do not possess a passport and rely upon their identity cards". Mr Bailhache has welcomed the States decision to continue the said: "I'm delighted that the assembly has agreed that the home affairs ministers should consider the concession in force and it will be of great assistance to our tourism industry."He added the decision was important because French day trippers had given a boost to the tourist economy."The estimate is that French day-trippers spend about £4.5m a year in Jersey, so this is clearly good for our restaurants and shop keepers," he added. Home affairs minister deputy Mary Le Hegarat said she supported the proposition but warned counterparts in the UK were not supportive of the scheme continuing."We have had a letter which basically says they are not supportive of it, but for us it is about balance," she Le Hegarat added: "We will be speaking to the UK again about the matter in person, I will go with the external relations minister so we can have those discussions about Jersey's economy and our tourist industry and how we move forward, because it is important we do that."It's critical for us to manage our economy and I'm hoping that the UK can see the evidence from the years we have been running this that it works well and it's not a risk to the borders and safety."In her ministerial comments on the proposition the minister said if the UK had concerns about the scheme which Jersey was unable to mitigate, it could lead "in a worst case scenario, which is considered unlikely, in the implementation of a hard border between the UK and Jersey."The BBC has approached the UK Government for comment.

Seth Meyers slammed for leaving wife to care for sick daughter during her commencement speech
Seth Meyers has been criticized for not looking after his sick daughter while his wife Alexi Ashe gave an important speech - instead leaving her to hold their poorly child on stage. The talk show host, 51, came under fire earlier this week when he paid a sweet tribute to his spouse, 42, in which he applauded her for taking care of their little girl Adelaide, three, while she gave a commencement address. In his gushing post, Meyers praised Ashe for 'putting on a motherhood clinic' on her big day, also revealing that her niece had run onto the podium to join her too. In Meyers' pictures, mom-of-three Ashe could be seen cradling a sick Adelaide in her arms while she stood in her robes on stage. 'So proud to watch @alexi crush her commencement address while also putting on a motherhood clinic without missing a beat,' he captioned the post. 'Our daughter was under the weather and not interested in being with anyone but her mom and instead of sending her home she let her join her on stage without ever losing her cool. 'And then to top it all off her niece just wandered to stage mid speech to chill behind the podium.' Meyers' followers didn't take too kindly to the post, however, and blasted him for 'not giving' Alexi the 'moment she deserved.' Meyers' post irked social media users, who pointed out that perhaps he should have stepped up to nurse their child and allow Alexi enjoy her milestone moment. Taking to the comments, one asked: 'Am I the only one who thinks someone should have helped with the kiddo so she can focus on the task at hand?' 'And wtf were you doing?' another quizzed. 'This is just sad,' a third said. 'Jeez can she get one moment of her own?' Agreeing, another wrote: 'Oh god! A motherhood clinic??! So now every mom who's giving a speech is supposed the let their kid come on stage if they're not feeling well. 'Nope. She's awesome and congrats to her but this really is about you not giving her the moment she deserves.' A fifth continued: 'Her daughter and her niece couldn't be stopped from joining her on stage? Where were these children's fathers?' 'Yeahh… so uhhh… this is not the kind moment you think it is,' blasted another. 'You just allowed these children to take away your wife's moment she worked really hard for without stepping up to help.' He said: 'Our daughter was under the weather and not interested in being with anyone but her mom and instead of sending her home she let her join her on stage without ever losing her cool' 'Am I the only one who thinks someone should have helped with the kiddo so she can focus on the task at hand?' asked one social media user A seventh said: 'How often do we see their kids in his show while he's trying to interview people? 'Such a double standard. Why are we PROUD of these sacrifices when mom makes them and silent when we NEVER see dads make them?' Meyers and Ashe, who is a human rights attorney, wed in 2013, five years after first meeting at a wedding in 2008. The couple welcomed their daughter Addie in 2021. They also have sons Ashe Olson, nine, and Axel Strahl, seven. Meyers also came under fire from his Late Night viewers on Tuesday evening after he failed to ask George Clooney about the reports that Joe Biden was unable to recognize the actor at a fundraiser last year. George, 63, was on the show to promote his Tony-nominated Broadway play 'Good Night, And Good Luck.' However, Meyers did not ask Clooney about the shocking revelations that came out about the former president in the new book Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again. The bombshell book by co-authors CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios correspondent Alex Thompson claimed that Biden was reportedly so impaired that he didn't recognize Clooney at a star-studded June 2024 Democratic fundraiser in Los Angeles, the book says, claiming it left the actor 'shaken to his core.' 'It was obvious to many standing there that the president did not know who George Clooney was,' the authors said. Another Hollywood VIP guest reportedly said: 'It was like watching someone who was not alive. It was so awful.' Critics blasted Meyers for focusing the interview on Clooney's Broadway debut and asking what his wife thought of his hair. 'AND the cover up of Joe's Dementia continues,' one person said. 'Not surprised,' said another.
