I am a super early riser. I wake up around 4:30AM most days. I love the early hours; there's a sense of clarity and stillness. I leave my blinds slightly open so the sun gradually wakes me. The first thing I do is pray Fajr and drink two glasses of water. I then head out for a 30-minute walk with my German Shepherd Ares. Once I'm back home, I start my morning routine. I begin by dry brushing my skin to exfoliate. After that, I jump into the shower, using my favourite body wash, Aesop Geranium Leaf. I apply natural musk oil that I get from Egypt, as it provides a fresh, clean scent (strong perfumes often give me headaches). Next, I brush my teeth, scrape my tongue, and cleanse my face with Beauty of Joseon facial wash. I use organic rose water as a toner, followed by a Vitamin C serum from BioMedical Emporium. To finish, I moisturise with Sisley and apply SPF50.
Part of my routine consists of taking a few drops of black seed oil, followed by a warm drink of lemon water mixed with apple cider vinegar and a homemade ginger-turmeric immunity shot.
I enjoy both dressing up and dressing down. Vintage pieces are a passion of mine, and I constantly look for ways to mix and match different shapes, styles, and textures. I prefer not to put too much effort into fashion and tend to shy away from perfection. I love outfits that make a strong statement about the wearer's personality or mood; to me, it's more about standing out than blending in. Ultimately, I believe there should be no strict rules when it comes to fashion, and I usually don't follow trends. I have a soft spot for ruffles, bows, and polka dots, and I prefer minimal make-up, messy hair, and comfortable jeans. I enjoy adding accessories like simple gold hoop earrings, red nail polish, and sunglasses. I aim to get ready in five to 10 minutes. I find inspiration in Caroline de Maigret and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy; chic yet effortless. They are women who dress for themselves.
6AM, I check my emails and messages.
8AM I always aim for a savoury breakfast that's high in protein. Most days, I have eggs with avocado on toast, topped with goat labneh and za'atar. On other days, I enjoy overnight oats, chia pudding with blueberries, and almond butter.
I live with my parents, Ahmed and Azza, as well as my dog and my two cats, Asal and Tahina. Every morning, we typically meet at our local coffee shop. They have their coffee while I sip on hot water. We chat for a while before starting our days.
9AM I have a morning class, rotating between Pilates, barre, Synkro, and yoga throughout the week. I'm currently carrying a Chanel 22 bag filled with a scarf, grip socks for Pilates, sunscreen, dates, a power bank, and lip products. After class, I treat myself to a cup of matcha before heading to the office.
11AM I dedicate my mornings to creative direction and deep work, which often feels like organised chaos. It's loud and filled with mood boards, fabric swatches, and samples. I love the creative freedom that comes with working with fabrics, creating mood boards, and watching ideas come to life. However, I really dislike administrative work.
1PM I take a packed lunch to work. It often consists of a warm salad, grilled protein, or a Mediterranean dish. I strive to eat natural, clean, home-cooked meals. When I feel like indulging, I bake desserts that are free of refined sugar. Sometimes, I have lunch with my team, while other days I eat with my family, who work next door. We are a small, close-knit team of about 15 people, and we may lunch together and brainstorm. Afternoons are filled with meetings. Ares comes to work with me, and at 3PM we go out for some fresh air.
4-5PM Evenings typically involve preparing dinner. Occasionally, I go out with friends; I prefer early dinners since I don't like to eat or stay up late. I also enjoy hosting intimate gatherings at home. We gather around the table in the garden with candles, enjoying good conversation. 7PM is dinner time. My favourite meal is grilled sea bass with roasted vegetables. After dinner, Ares and I take a walk before returning home to shower and join my parents in the living room for some fruit and a bit of TV. 9:30PM My nightly routine begins with supplements; magnesium, a castor oil patch, and lavender oil, as sleep is critical to me. I am a light sleeper so my room has to be calm and pitch black.

Summer 2025: You need some linen in your life
I know what you're thinking: Barbiecore is so summer 2023, what is she doing harping on about a trend that's two years old? And you'd be right; on the face of it, pink gingham is quintessentially Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour during a summer experienced through the haze of rose-tinted glasses. So why this year, when the performance of luxury fashion's megabrands looks anything but rosy, have I chosen to highlight a look that's core BBB (Before Birkenstock Barbie)? Firstly, yes, the outfit on this page is undeniably pink gingham, but it also comes in at least six other varieties, from cool girl citron to Bloomsbury-era blooms. However, it's not the colours or prints that make it a summer wardrobe staple, nor is it the simplicity of the A-line silhouette (with pockets), although both are key (as are pockets). It's that it is made from 100 per cent linen, and pure linen is, nine times out of 10, the answer to all your summer holiday wardrobe woes. Why? I find that much of what I wear in Dubai doesn't work in the rest of the world. It's either too boujee, too impractical for actual weather, or simply doesn't translate to a lifestyle of walking rather than valeting. Enter linen. With linen, you can still wear a girly dress or cute co-ord shorts and a bodice top, and not look like you took a wrong turn out of Bar Du Port. You can even wear pink gingham and not risk appearing like you're stuck in a summer 2023 time warp. Linen pink gingham is timeless. Polyester pink gingham is challenging. Linen opens up a wealth of footwear options; essential when you're either on foot or on public transport, and as likely to encounter cobblestone as a sudden downpour. It works with flip-flops, dad sandals, ballet flats, kitten heels, cowboy boots, even trainers. I can clock up to 25,000 steps a day on my summer hols and — despite fashion's insistence that they are over — I have yet to be prised out of my all-ivory Adidas Sambas (the key is to buy the decon rather than the OG edition, for the softest, collapsible leather that's blister-resistant). Aside from cotton and denim, no other fabric is as fashionably footwear fluid as linen. Linen is never over-dressed, nor under-dressed. You can wear it covered in floral print, gussied up with bows and frou-frous and it won't look muttony. Likewise, an oversized linen shirt and drawstring shorts is as comfy as pyjamas yet still reads chic. Summer 2025's linen brand of choice is the Australian label Posse, which has, over the years, been worn by the likes of Meghan Markle, Katie Holmes, and Selena Gomez, while Sofia Richie chose one of the brand's skirt sets for her wedding weekend. In the UAE, Posse is stocked by Ounass and Bloomingdale's, but you'll have to move fast, sizes sell out quickly. My longtime go-to for linen co-ords and dresses is US brand Reformation, also at Ounass in the UAE. Many of its styles incorporate a smocked back, for a flexible fit that looks bespoke. When I want to wear something a bit special, but not a project that I've tried too hard, Reformation is my go-to. Its relaxed linen 'Aubree' dress (Dh390) consistently sells out each summer. Right now, I'm eyeing the 'Janu' dress (Dh1,150) in a spun sugar shade that looks excellent with black accessories. On the high street, Marks & Spencer and Zara do brilliant linen — opt for solids or basic prints like stripes and polka dots, rather than florals when shopping the high street. Linen speaks to tousled hair and mismatched heirloom jewellery. It does not pair well with logos, Labubus and Louboutins. Yes, it creases like a beast, but — outside of Dubai at least — appearing artfully crumpled, whether of face or fashion, is increasingly a badge of honour. Like ageing gracefully, linen is the last word in low-key luxe living.

To understand what really fuels them, we turned to two Dubai-based self-made entrepreneurs who epitomise the lifestyle: Ali AlArif, CEO of World Padel Academy, and Layla Kardan, founder of Contrast Wellness. Here are some prized tips: Don't hit snooze on that alarm You'll never meet a millionaire who wakes up late and sluggish. Dubai-based CEOs we spoke to agree: the morning begins the night before — with intention. AlArif says: 'I'm up at Fajr time daily, no snooze, no excuses. I like to win the morning so the rest of the day feels earned.' Similarly, Kardan, swears by gentler mornings. 'Wake up with the sun, not an alarm screaming at me.' Instead of jolting awake to a frantic iPhone buzz, they opt for softer cues — light-based alarm clocks, natural morning sun, or even their internal body clocks. The goal is waking up without anxiety, without resistance, and with clarity. The snooze button, as harmless as it seems, is the first micro-decision that sets you back — and successful people know that micro decisions add up to macro outcomes. The morning hydration ritual In the quiet stillness of early morning, before emails flood the inbox and meetings fill the calendar, the first gesture of care for many self-made millionaires is surprisingly simple: water — with intention. Hydration, when done right, is not merely functional; it's ritualistic. It awakens the body from its fasting state, replenishes cellular energy, and sets the tone for decision-making that is sharp, composed, and unhurried. 'I start every morning with an electrolyte,' says AlArif. 'Especially with the weather here in Dubai, I tend to drink two to three bottles depending on how active my day is.' His routine is utilitarian, yet optimised — a clear nod to performance-driven living. For Kardan, hydration is equal parts nourishment and ritual. 'I ease into the day with either orange juice or mineral water mixed with honey and a pinch of salt,' she reveals. 'It gently wakes up my system, balances blood sugar, and helps keep stress hormones low.' A refined elixir for the body and mind — grounding, replenishing, and entirely befitting of a wellness entrepreneur who understands that productivity is a byproduct of inner balance. Have a vision and plan the day There's a quiet power in pausing before the pace of the world takes over. Most high performers in Dubai don't roll out of bed and dive into their phones. Kardan, for instance, begins her mornings by scribbling a few notes. 'I jot down three things: how I want to feel, how I want to show up as a leader, and what kind of energy I want to give that day,' she says. 'It's my way of checking in with myself before the world starts pulling.' AlArif, on the other hand, carves out space for structure. His mornings begin after Fajr with a quiet cup of coffee and a moment to map the hours ahead. Planning, for him, is non-negotiable. 'I start my day by structuring everything ahead of time. Before any work, I move my body — that could be padel, cycling, gym, or even kayaking.' That physical reset, he believes, sharpens mental focus for the rest of the day. Fuel with intention When it comes to the first meal of the day, the age-old adage still holds true in 2025: 'Breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dine like a pauper.' Most self-made millionaires design their breakfast. For them, it's not about indulgence but building sustainable energy that lasts all morning, without the crash that caffeine or empty carbs often bring. Kardan keeps it simple, but strategic: 'My meals are warming, nutrient-dense, and focused on real energy: fruits, good fats, collagen, and quality protein. I support my minerals and thyroid health — no fasting or caffeine overload here.' AlArif, on the other hand, turns to Practical — a Dubai-based cloud kitchen that preps all three of his meals daily. It's a streamlined approach to nutrition that leaves zero room for excuses. As he puts it: 'Physical discipline is mental discipline.' It's that consistency that separates habit from hustle. Even global names follow suit. British business magnate Richard Branson, for instance, swears by a morning mix of muesli and fresh fruit — not flashy, just functional. Because no matter how tight the calendar, high performers eat like it matters. Move your body, recover your mind For Dubai's high performers, movement is less about aesthetics and more about staying regulated and energised. Kardan follows what she calls 'Movement + Heat' — rotating between light strength work, stretching, sauna sessions, and the occasional cold plunge, 'but only if I follow it with warmth, food, and rest'. It's her way of listening to the body without pushing it to burnout. AlArif, meanwhile, balances high-output training like padel, kayaking, and weightlifting with a recovery plan just as disciplined: cold plunges, weekly physio, wearable tracking via Whoop, and personalised supplements from Bioniq. 'We're under constant pressure,' he says, 'and recovery can't be an afterthought.' For both, movement is a daily non-negotiable — not just for the body, but to sharpen focus and sustain momentum. Protect the moments that ground you After a day built on structure and output, the most grounded leaders in Dubai turn inward — not by retreating from their ambition, but by reconnecting with the quieter parts of life that make it meaningful. For AlArif, that means unplugging completely, even if just for ten minutes, to sit and play with his children. 'No phones, no distractions — rather intentional stillness,' he says. It's a small but sacred pause that keeps his personal life in step with his professional momentum. He also finds calm in solitude, often visiting his favourite boutique cafés post-planning sessions to sit alone, away from meetings, just to observe, breathe, and reset. That sense of self-anchoring resonates with Kardan, who often takes a mid-day pause for music or reading. 'It keeps me feeling human and connected — not just productive,' she says, describing it as a soft check-in with herself before the day resumes. Wind down, recharge for the next day Many businesses don't fail from bad strategy — they fail because the founder burns out. Studies show 72 per cent of entrepreneurs struggle with burnout, and most admit it clouds judgement and impacts team performance. That's why wind-down rituals aren't indulgent — they're essential. For Kardan, that ritual starts in her infrared sauna. 'It helps me drop back into my body, sleep better, and leave the day behind,' she says. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared heat works deeper at lower temperatures, easing stress, boosting circulation, and helping the body detox gently. Her evening tool kit includes red light therapy for hormones and glow, fascia release to let go of tension, and the occasional cold plunge — always followed by warmth and rest. 'It's not about chasing stress,' she adds, 'it's about resilience.'
