Abigail's Party review – woozy, boozy Beverly throws her party from hell once again
For a play so rooted in the 1970s, Abigail's Party is having a surprising renaissance. The Royal Exchange's new production is the third major revival of Mike Leigh's play in less than 12 months, after outings with Theatre Royal Stratford East and English Touring Theatre. Natalie Abrahami's version relocates the play to Manchester, though this could be a middle-class cul-de-sac anywhere.
Leigh's tale of suburban boredom and aspiration transports easily, speaking to a whole generation of striving consumers. At its heart is domineering hostess Beverly, played with a loose-limbed, tipsy energy by Kym Marsh. Forcing drinks and nibbles on her guests, she's forever on the verge of swaying – either to the music or from one too many gin and tonics – but beneath this there are occasional glints of something harder.
The main target of her barbs is estate agent husband Laurence (Graeme Hawley, almost vibrating with contained frustration), while new neighbours Angela (played with both innocence and grit by Yasmin Taheri) and Tony (a taciturn Kyle Rowe) are on the receiving end of her bullying hospitality. The party is completed by Tupele Dorgu's brilliantly uneasy Susan, mother of the eponymous Abigail, whose understated horror is written all over her face.
Putting Beverly and Laurence's home on the Royal Exchange stage compresses it, creating an even tighter pressure cooker. Surrounded by the audience, there's no escape for these party guests. The sparingly used revolve evokes the booze-fuelled wooziness of the evening and heightens the climactic drama, lending a growing queasiness to Peter Butler's design of oranges, browns and yellows.
It remains a play that feels very much of its time, but Abrahami and her cast bring subtle shades of light and dark to these well-worn characters, underlining the sadness as well as the comedy of Leigh's suburbia.

YouTuber reveals favourite 'chippy' after UK tour
A YouTuber who has spent 15 months travelling across the UK to sample 120 fish and chip shops has told how his favourite turned out to be in a town just a short hop from Peel said he began his delicious mission - named The Chippy Tour - to "support and promote the traditional fish and chip".But after scouring the length and breadth of the country he decided - after a third visit - that his absolute number one was Green Lane Chippy in Leigh, Greater Manchester. Proprietor Paul Georgiou, who runs the shop with his brother Andy, said it was a "great honour" to be praised by Mr Peel, who has amassed thousands of online followers. Mr Georgiou said his shop had been around for "well over 100 years". "There's customers in there who are 80, 90 years old who have been coming in since they were kids," he said. "We do take a lot of care, we're very fussy in our products. We've got great staff and fantastic customers." Mr Peel, of Warrington, Cheshire, who posts his reviews on Youtube, said he got the idea after becoming concerned by the decline of traditional fish and chip shops due to spiralling costs and competition. He said he visits each shop incognito to ensure he gets the same service as anyone else, before filming his reviews somewhere nearby and rating each establishment out of five. "The idea is to show fish and chips at different chippies, how they do it, their love for the meal," he told BBC Radio Manchester. "When you actually get to start meeting the people, they really want to be the best. They have their own ideas about things like the batter and their cooking mediums."It's family-run usually, through generations sometimes. There's so much more that goes into these businesses." Mr Peel said he often ensures he also tries any other speciality dishes he spots on the menu. "If they do their own pies or do their own things like deep fired Mars bars, I'm on it," he said. Edinburgh Pride announces headline acts with X Factor star to hit stage

More info The organisers of Edinburgh Pride have announced their headline acts, with event details and the march route announced. For their 30th anniversary, X Factor star Diana Vickers will be leading the performances. She'll be joined by singer Kelli-Leigh, as well as RuPaul's Drag Race UK stars Ellie Diamond and O'Connor. The main event is being held on June 21, with a day of 'celebration, joy and protest' for the city. Also set to perform are local drag talents Sissy Scorpio, and Rozie Cheeks, with high-energy DJ sets throughout the day from Sylva, Darran Glasgow, and Lezzer Quest. The main stage will by hosted by Edinburgh drag queen 'royalty' Blaze. It'll all kick off from 2pm, after the march comes to an end. Coronation Street fans are convinced a major star is returning to the ITV soap after a cryptic social media post. Fans have taken to Twitter/X to share their theories that Michelle Connor may be set to return to the cobbles, after actress Kym Marsh teased her next project on Instagram. Michelle was last seen taking a taxi out of Weatherfield in 2019, after a dramatic 13 year tenure. After her arrival on the street in 2006, Michelle was part of some big storylines, including the discovery that her son had been swapped at birth, the deaths of both of her brothers, a stalking ordeal, and a shooting. Perhaps her most moving storyline saw her tragically lose son Ruairi after going into early labour. Ahead of her exit, Michelle was involved in a dramatic love triangle that saw her discover that fiancé Robert Preston was leading a double life, having got Vicky Jefferies pregnant. Following the discovery, Michelle and Vicky teamed up to get revenge on Robert by framing him for Vicky's murder. However, they scrapped their plan when Vicky went into labour while in hiding, with Michelle forced to deliver the baby. Following Robert's death a few days later, Michelle moved back to Ireland, where she has been ever since. Now though, fans are wondering if she may be set to come home to Coronation Street. Taking to Instagram, Kym recently revealed that she needed to take a holiday after seven weeks of performing in Abigail's Party at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. She went on to tease that her next adventure was set to begin, alongside eight smiley face emojis. Fans instantly jumped on the post, taking to Twitter/X to share their hopes for a Michelle Connor return. 'Michelle Connor return looms,' one fan wrote, while another said, 'michelle connor is coming home'. Corrie fans previously picked up on a potential hint that Kym was returning to the cobbles, when make-up artist Gillian Walsh revealed that she'd had a special guest in her chair. The picture was posted just after it was announced that Kym had left Waterloo Road, which led fans to speculate that she may have been the special guest. Kym has previously said that she wouldn't rule out a return to the cobbles.
