Chery Tiggo outlasts Akari in five sets for 2-0 start in PVL On Tour

GMA Network06-07-2025
Chery Tiggo once again turned to Cess Robles and Renee Peñafiel to pull off a 24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10 win against Akari and remain spotless so far in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Sunday.
Robles poured a team-high 23 points together with 15 digs while rookie Peñafiel continued to impress with 12 markers and eight receptions as the Crossovers improved to 2-0 in Pool B. The Chargers, on the other hand, fell to 1-3.
Chery Tiggo made a fightback in the fourth set in bid to finish Akari off right away with Robles tying things up at 17-all before Akari responded with a 6-1 blast that gave the wards of new head coach Tina Salak a 23-18 cushion.
The Crossovers then staged a 5-1 rampage fueled by Peñafiel as they trimmed the gap to one, 24-23. Grethcel Soltones, though, flashed her veteran presence and finished the fourth set with an attack of her own to drag the Crossovers to a fifth set.
Chery Tiggo just built on that momentum in the deciding frame as they cruised to yet another victory following a four-set romp of Capital1 just yesterday.
"Of course masayang-masaya kasi two games tapos two wins. Kung kahapon, naging confidence-booster 'yung pagkapanalo namin, all the more na ito," Chery Tiggo head coach Norman Miguel said.
"Malaking bagay sa amin ang panalo na 'to. Sobrang masaya."

Creamline sweeps Cignal to claim PVL On Tour bronze medal

Even in unfamiliar territory, Creamline unleashed the same poise after staging a Set 2 comeback to complete a 25-17, 29-27, 25-17 win against Cignal and capture the bronze medal in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena. The multi-titled Cool Smashers, who fell to PLDT in the semifinals and missed a return trip to the championship round, leaned on veteran opposite hitter Michele Gumabao, who delivered 21 points on 16 attacks, three blocks, and an ace to secure a podium finish. The HD Spikers raced to a 24-20 lead in the second set following a service error from Creamline's Aleiah Torred. However, the Cool Smashers did not press the panic button with setter Rhea Villarete providing the spark, serving an ace to cap a 4-0 run that tied things up at 24-all. Cignal then took another set point when Jackie Acuña denied Jema Galanza from the left side, 27-26, but Cignal made a costly call to challenge a floor touch play that turned out unsuccessful and allowed Creamline to force another deadlock at 27-all. Gumabao then finished it off, rejecting Acuña on her quick attack before swinging from the opposite side as Creamline moved on the verge of a sweep victory. Cignal kept it close in the third set after Erin Pangilinan completed a running kill and Galanza committed an attack error to trail by just one, 17-18. But a composed Creamline closed it out with calmness as Gumabao squeezed it between two blockers to bring the Cool Smashers to a 23-17 cushion before Galanza unloaded an ace for the match point. A net touch violation was then called against Cignal as Creamline wrapped up the straight-sets triumph. Galanza chipped in 13 points laced with eight digs and seven receptions while team captain Alyssa Valdez chimed in with 12 markers and seven receptions. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Chery Tiggo fends off late Cignal rally to clinch PVL On Tour finals berth

Chery Tiggo held off a late rampage from Cignal to complete a 25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23 win during their semifinals bout in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The win allowed the Crossovers to return to the finals round for the first time since 2021, when they ruled the Open Conference to emerge as the first-ever titleholder since the league turned professional. ?Chery Tiggo now awaits the winner between Creamline and PLDT. Cess Robles and Ara Galang were at the forefront of offense for the Norman Miguel-helmed crew with both players posting 15 points with the former NU standout grabbing 11 digs and 11 receptions for a triple-double outing. Imee Hernandez chipped in 12 points highlighted by four blocks while rookie Renee Peñafiel chipped in 10 markers to help Chery Tiggo return to a finals stage for the first time after four years. But the Crossovers faced a few bumps along the way. Already enjoying a 16-10 lead in Set 4, Chery Tiggo had to weather a desperate rally from the HD Spikers, who leaned on Heather Guino-o and rookie Jessa Ordiales to unleash a 5-1 run. But Chery Tiggo responded with a 5-1 run of its own capped by an attack error from Guino-o to create a 22-16 separation. Guino-o then atoned for that mishap, hammering one from the left wing before serving an ace to help Erika Santos lead a 4-1 response as they pulled within one point, 22-23. Hernandez, though, completed a quick kill before Santos retaliated with another solid kill from the opposite side for a 23-24 deficit. But Galang finished what she started, swinging from the right side to seal the deal. "Nakaka-proud 'yung buong team, 'yung players namin, 'yung mga kasama ko sa coaching staff, tapos 'yung mga PT. Masaya kasi hindi naman talaga madali 'yung pinagdadaanan namin, especially these past few days," Miguel said. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
