'If Joe Root Can't Break Tendulkar's Record, Then...': Ex-India WK Makes Bold Claim
Parthiv Patel believes Joe Root is the only one who can break Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs in Test history.
Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel believes that if Joe Root fails to break Sachin Tendulkar's record for most runs in Test history, then future contenders will have it 'very difficult' to come close to it.
Patel was asked on a Star Sports show, rather light-heartedly, if Root should do a Wiaan Mulder and 'retire' before breaking Tendulkar's record as a mark of respect. Patel laughed it out and rejected the idea, saying he didn't agree with Mulder then and won't want Root to do such a thing either.
Root went past Rahul Dravid, Jaques Kaalis and Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in the format with his 150 (248) against India in the ongoing fourth Test at Old Trafford. It took his tally to 13,409, only 2512 behind Tendulkar's.
'He should not do that at all," Patel said. 'I don't agree with what Mulder did at all because when that record was broken (before Lara), it was Matthew Hayden against Zimbabwe in Perth. He didn't say no at the time. If you are in that position, then why not? Joe Root is the only one who has come close to the record. Earlier, people used to talk about how records are meant to be broken," he added.
'But realistically, if anyone can challenge this record, it is Joe Root. If he can't do it, it'll be even more difficult because Test cricket isn't played as much now, and no one is even close to that amount of runs. If that 15,921 has to be surpassed, it'll have to be Joe Root; otherwise, it'll become very difficult," Patel said.
South African all-rounder Mulder was at 367 against Zimbabwe, just 34 runs behind Brian Lara's all-time high score of 400. Despite being the stand-in captain in that match, he decided to declare the Proteas' innings to keep Lara's record intact after discussions with head coach Shukri Conrad.
Later, Mulder revealed that Lara had reached out to him and said that he should have gone for it, adding that if put into that situation again, he would probably make a different decision.

Indian Coach's Big Reveal: 'Oval Curator Shouted At Indian Support Staff'
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak revealed that The Oval head groundsman Lee Fortis shouted at India's support staff over a cooling box near the pitch, angering Gautam Gambhir. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has revealed that The Oval head groundsman Lee Fortis 'shouted' at the visiting support staff over their decision to place a cooling box near the pitch. Kotak said this was one of the things that angered head coach Gautam Gambhir, leading to finger-pointing and abuse directed at Fortis. Gambhir can be heard telling Fortis, 'F**** you, go complain to whoever you want. You are just a groundsman. Stay in that capacity', during India's optional training session at the ground, two days before the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy begins here on July 31. Kotak said Fortis was quite possessive about the pitch but maintained that India weren't breaking any norms and were too experienced to do that. 'No, when he was bringing the cooling box there, he was sitting on the roller, he shouted and told the support staff not to take it there. Now the weight of that cooling box will be 10 kilos, according to me. It will not be more than that. And what we are doing there," Kotak said in the press conference. 'So, it is good to be a little possessive, and it is also good to be protective, but not that much. So, then Gautam just said that do not talk to the support staff like this, because the support staff, we all come under the head coach. Any head coach will say that you cannot shout from there and say this," he added. Fortis reportedly threatened to lodge a formal complaint about Gambhir. India, on their part, have denied any such consideration. Kotak also suggested that this wasn't the first time a team was involved in such an incident with Fortis. 'So, it was very normal. Then he came there, and he was saying, I think it got built up from the wicket when we were watching. And to be very, very honest, if you want me to be very honest, before coming to Oval, most of the team knows that the curator is not the easiest person to get on with. And I am sure you also would be aware of it. So, that gives a lot of answers. No, I do not think there is any point in complaining," he said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Lewis Hamilton Backs Kimi Antonelli: 'To Be Thrown In At The Deep End At 18'
Last Updated: Lewis Hamilton came out in support of Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, praising the 18-year-old's performance despite recent criticism. Lewis Hamilton has strongly supported Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, asserting that the 18-year-old is 'doing fantastic" despite growing criticism regarding his recent performances in Formula 1. 'I can't imagine what it's like at 18, or try to imagine what it's like at 18 to do what he's been doing," Hamilton was quoted as saying to Sky Sports. 'I think he's been doing fantastic to be thrown in at the deep end at 18. He didn't even have his driving licence when he started racing, so I think it's a lot on someone's shoulders and I think he's doing a great job." Who Is Kimi Antonelli? Antonelli, who replaced the seven-time World Champion at Mercedes this season, began his F1 career with a series of strong results, including five points finishes in the first six races and a podium in Canada. However, a dip in form has followed. The Italian crashed out with Max Verstappen in Austria, failed to score at Silverstone, and had a disappointing weekend in Belgium—failing to get out of SQ1 and Q1 before finishing outside the points. He was visibly emotional during post-race interviews. The pressure isn't entirely new. Antonelli also struggled under the spotlight in 2024, when he crashed during his F1 practice debut at Monza amid intense hype. He later admitted to being mentally and physically exhausted ahead of his home race at Imola this year, drained by the obligations that came with racing on Italian soil. But Hamilton believes Antonelli is handling the pressure as best as anyone could at such a young age. 'He's got a great group of people around him. I think he's just got to take it in his stride, which I think he is," said Hamilton. 'And as I say, he's got Bono [Pete Bonnington, Hamilton's former engineer] beside him, so he couldn't have anyone better."
