Kelvin Sampson, Houston agree to new 4-year deal through 2028-29 season
The veteran coach has signed a new four-year contract with the school that will run through the 2028-29 season, the school announced on Thursday. He had two years remaining on his previous contract.

The new deal will keep Sampson on par with the highest-paid coaches in college basketball, per CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein. The terms of the contract have yet to be announced.
"There is no other program in the country that has been able to do what he has done, at the level he has been able to do it," Houston athletic director Eddie Nunez said in an interview with Fox 26's Will Kunkel. "As long as he wants to be our coach, I'm in!"
Sampson just wrapped up his 11th season at Houston and the Cougars have been a mainstay among college basketball's elite for most of his tenure. In his time at the school, the Cougars have made the Sweet 16 six times and have two Final Four appearances.

This year's team might've been his best yet.
The Cougars pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament in the Final Four, knocking out Cooper Flagg and Duke after a furious rally at the end of the game. They nearly capped it all off with a trophy in the championship game, but Florida eked out a 65-63 win.
Houston is in position to continue that success next season, bringing in the nation's No. 2 recruiting class, as ranked by Rivals. The class includes forwards Chris Cenac Jr. (the No. 6 player nationally) with guards Isiah Harwell (No. 9), Kingston Flemings (No. 22) and Bryce Jackson. The Cougars are also adding senior forward Kalifa Sakho in the transfer portal from Sam Houston State.
Sampson has compiled a 299-84 record during his 11 seasons at Houston, a .781 winning percentage. Overall, he has a 724-311 record during his career, which includes stints at Washington State, Oklahoma and Indiana.

Rookie Carter Bryant will begin his career in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs with a new jersey number after wearing No. 9 as a freshman last season at Arizona. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Spurs in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. Bryant has ingratiated himself well within the local community after volunteering at a couple of events this offseason. The team was excited to add him and is eager to watch him hit the court. Pelicans' Derik Queen chooses new jersey number to begin NBA career
New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen will have a new jersey number next season after previously wearing No. 25 for much of his basketball career. Queen donned that number last season as a freshman at the University of Maryland and during his tenure at the Montverde Academy in Central Florida. He even wore it while playing AAU basketball, leading Team Thrill to the Under Armour Association U-17 spring championship in 2023. With No. 25 currently occupied by Trey Murphy III, Queen opted to change to No. 22. It isn't exactly clear why Queen chose No. 22, but it was one of the closest open numbers to his longtime preference. The 13th pick debuted with the Pelicans in the NBA Summer League, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block in three appearances. He registered a double-double in each appearance, including a 17-point, 10-rebound effort against Portland on July 15. The Pelicans announced on July 18 that Queen would miss at least 12 weeks after undergoing surgery to address a torn ligament in his left wrist sustained against the Trail Blazers. After an encouraging run over the summer, Queen and the team will be hopeful for a speedy recovery.
