Talks at the United Nations on forging a landmark treaty to combat the scourge of plastic pollution have made insufficient progress, the negotiations chair said Saturday in a frank mid-way assessment.
"Progress made has not been sufficient," Ecuadoran diplomat Luis Vayas Valdivieso told delegates in a blunt summary, adding: "We have arrived at a critical stage where a real push to achieve our common goal is needed", ahead of the Thursday deadline.

UN Chief Deeply Alarmed by Israeli Move to Take Control of Gaza City
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over Israel's decision to 'take control of Gaza City,' warning it could lead to an even greater humanitarian disaster for Palestinians. In a statement, Guterres said the move represents a dangerous escalation that risks worsening the suffering of millions in Gaza and could further endanger lives — including those of the remaining hostages. 'The people of Gaza are already enduring a humanitarian catastrophe of horrific proportions,' he said, warning that more fighting will bring further displacement, loss of life, and massive destruction. The UN chief renewed his call for a permanent ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid access across Gaza, and the immediate, unconditional release of all hostages. He also urged Israel to honor its obligations under international law, recalling a July 2024 International Court of Justice ruling that called on Israel to halt all new settlement activity, evacuate settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and end its occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Guterres stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved by ending the occupation and realizing a viable two-state solution, with Gaza as an inseparable part of a future Palestinian state.

The UAE delegation took part in more than 25 major events, including workshops and discussions, and held over 48 bilateral meetings with representatives from countries, global organizations, and UN bodies. Among those engaged were leaders from Japan, China, India, Uzbekistan, Eswatini, Senegal, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, Paraguay, Indonesia, and Russia. As part of the Government Knowledge Exchange Programme, the UAE showcased its development model and explored new ways to accelerate progress towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
