Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency in your hair and skin

Time of India2 days ago

Even for a tropical country like ours that gets plenty of sunshine, almost 80% of the population suffers from Vitamin D deficiency. Known as the "sunshine vitamin", Vitamin D is a nutrient the body needs, along with calcium, to build bones and keep them healthy.
When your body lacks enough vitamin D, it can show up in subtle but important ways, especially in your hair and skin. Here are some signs that you need some Vitamin D...
Hair health
Vitamin D is essential for healthy, luscious, hair. It helps activate hair follicles, the tiny sacs in your scalp where hair grows. When vitamin D levels are low, hair follicles may not function properly, leading to hair thinning or hair loss.
Common hair issues due to lack of Vitamin D
Hair Thinning: Low vitamin D shortens the growth phase (called anagen) of hair follicles, causing hair to become thinner. You can notice it through a broadening forehead, or a wide partition on your scalp.
Hair Loss: Deficiency can lead to conditions like hair loss, or alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder causing patchy hair loss.
Slow Hair Growth: Hair may grow more slowly and appear dull or lifeless with little to no volume.

Research shows that people with low vitamin D often experience hair fall, and difficulty maintaining thick, healthy hair. While other factors like genetics and nutrition also play a role, vitamin D is key to keeping hair follicles active and healthy.
How it causes hair damage
Hair follicles cycle through three stages: growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and rest (telogen). Vitamin D helps keep hair in the growth phase longer.
Without enough vitamin D, hair follicles enter the resting phase too soon, causing more hair to fall.
Additionally, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata, where the immune system attacks hair follicles, resulting in patchy hair loss.
Skin health
Vitamin D also plays a vital role in maintaining healthy skin. It helps skin repair itself, supports the immune system, and regulates cell growth.
Skin Symptoms of Low Vitamin D
Dry, flaky skin: Lack of vitamin D can cause your skin to become dry, flaky, or rough.
Slow healing of wounds: Vitamin D helps skin heal after cuts or injuries. Deficiency may slow this process.
Increased sensitivity: Your skin may become more sensitive or prone to infections.
Dull, patchy skin: Without enough vitamin D, skin may lose its sheen and look sick or tired.
Because vitamin D supports the skin's immune defenses, low levels can make you more vulnerable to skin problems like eczema or psoriasis flare-ups.
Why these are easy to miss
Hair thinning is slow: Hair loss due to vitamin D deficiency happens slowly, so it's easy to attribute it to stress, aging, or other causes.
Dry skin is a common occurrence: Many people experience dry or rough skin for various reasons, such as dehydration.
Non specific signs: Fatigue, mood changes, and muscle weakness often accompany vitamin D deficiency, but these symptoms are common in many conditions.
Who is at risk
Certain groups are more likely to have low vitamin D levels:
People who spend little time outdoors or live in areas with little sunlight.
Those with darker skin, as higher melanin reduces vitamin D production.
Older adults, whose skin produces less vitamin D.
People with certain medical conditions like obesity, kidney or liver disease.
Individuals who use sunscreen rigorously or cover their skin.
How to improve Vitamin D levels for healthy hair and skin
Get "safe" sunlight: Spend short periods in sunlight daily, ideally 10-30 minutes early morning, (7-8 am) without sunscreen on your hands and feet (cover your face though)
Consume a rich diet: Include fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), egg yolks, fortified dairy products, and mushrooms in your diet.
Supplements: If you're at risk or have confirmed deficiency, vitamin D supplements can help restore normal levels. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting supplements.
Overall nutrition: Balanced nutrition supports hair and skin health alongside vitamin D.

The proposed hospital, with talent at par with AIIMS, will further strengthen the health and medical education ecosystem in the Chandigarh region. The project was first mooted in 2024 during the visit of the Union Home Secretary to Chandigarh. The Union Home Secretary directed the administration to work on projects promoting Chandigarh as a hub for regional and national-level healthcare. The UT administration initially proposed a major expansion of the GMSH-16. In response, the Centre asked the UT to work on a more long-term vision and develop a 'centre of excellence' along the lines of AIIMS. Thereafter, the UT prepared the proposal, and discussions were held at the level of Niti Aayog. The health facilities in the UT not only cater to residents of the city but also to adjoining areas of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and far-flung areas. The Niti Aayog meeting was held to discuss strengthening the existing healthcare infrastructure in the UT and to decongest the present govt hospitals in the city. In the city's neighbourhood, plans for the development of major healthcare infrastructure are yet to be fully implemented. For instance, the Medicity in New Chandigarh is yet to take off fully. 2000-bed facility The hospital is planned to be a 2000-bed facility and will be the second-largest hospital in Chandigarh after PGIMER. A s per the initial plans for the hospital, it will have a 500-bed emergency, general hospital, day care centre, and geriatric centre. There will be a 500-bed advanced mother and child centre, a 300-bed critical care, trauma, and burn unit, and a 300-bed super specialty block, including an advanced neuroscience centre, advanced cardiac centre, advanced GI and liver centre, and advanced renal and dialysis centre. Additionally, there will be a 200-bed mental healthcare centre, including a drug de-addiction centre, and a 200-bed advanced communicable and non-communicable disease centre. "Apart from this, an integrated clinical and public health laboratory, advanced imaging and diagnostic facility, and an academic block where the examination cell, telemedicine hub, conference hall, and other facilities will be located. An administrative block will be built separately," said a UT official. MSID:: 121627918 413 |

New York hit by Canada wildfire smoke, advisory issued over outdoor activities

Smoke from Canadian wildfires started making air quality worse in the eastern U.S. on Wednesday as several Midwestern states battled conditions deemed unhealthy by the federal government. The fires have forced thousands of Canadians to flee their homes and sent smoke as far as Europe. Parts of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York had areas of moderate air quality concern, and officials advised sensitive people to consider reducing outdoor activity. In the U.S., smoke lingered on the skylines of cities from Kansas City to Minneapolis, and a swath of the region had unhealthy air quality on Wednesday, according to an Environmental Protection Agency map. Iowa issued a statewide air quality alert through early Thursday, urging residents to limit certain outdoor activities and warning of possible health effects due to the thick smoke. Wisconsin officials made similar suggestions as the smoke drifted southeast across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, authorities advised people shut windows at night, avoid strenuous activity outside and watch for breathing issues. 7-month-old among 60 fresh Covid-positive patients in state

1 2 Kolkata: A seven-month-old baby was among the 60 fresh Covid-positive cases reported in Bengal on Wednesday. The infant, possibly the youngest to get the infection in the state during this current spike, is admitted to Peerless Hospital. Doctors said the child is doing well and does not need intensive care. Since the mother also had mild symptoms, her swab samples were tested and she tested positive as well. With the 60 fresh cases, the total active Covid load in the state has crossed 400. According to sources, the infant was symptomatic with a high-grade fever, sneezing, runny nose, and cough. As she was refusing any kind of feed, including breast milk, and had become increasingly irritable, the parents brought her to the hospital on Monday. "The infant showed noticeable symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. As she refused feed for over eight hours before being brought to the hospital, dehydration set in, and there was decreased urine output," said paediatrician Sanjukta De, who is treating the infant. The upper respiratory samples were sent for confirmation of the type of viral infection via the virus panel test, which can detect 15 odd viruses, including adeno, parainfluenza, RSV, and influenza. The hospital said that the parents of the child, who are residents of south Kolkata, do not have a travel history. However, during the history-taking process, it was noted that the domestic help had a high-grade fever a few days ago, after which the baby's mother developed a mild cough and fever. The child is now recovering with a nebuliser, IV fluid, and other supportive care. "In the past few days, I have come across a good number of children below one year of age with upper respiratory symptoms. But most parents did not want tests to be done. It is alright if the symptoms are mild and simple paracetamol works. But parents should avoid over-the-counter drugs in case the symptoms linger. Instead, they should consult doctors," added De. Doctors said even if Covid-19 largely spared younger children during the pandemic only with mild symptoms, they are seeing some children needing hospitalisation during this current uptick. In fact, there have been reports of at least three other cases of children requiring hospital care in the past two weeks, including a 15-year-old boy in Peerless, a nine-month-old child at Medical College Hospital (MCH), and a two-year-old child at Malda Medical College. While all three have been discharged from the hospital, sources in the health department said a child currently admitted at MCH has also tested positive for Covid-19. Sources in the health department said the child, however, has various health issues, and Covid was an incidental finding. The child is recovering well.
