Farmers protest in Manapparai over loan denials, water crisis

Time of India21 hours ago
Trichy: Members of the Desiya Thenninthiya Nadhigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, led by P Ayyakannu, staged a protest at the Manapparai bus stand on Sunday, raising key demands related to farm distress, water scarcity, and agricultural loan policies.
The protesters said cooperative banks were denying fresh crop loans on the grounds of low CIBIL scores, even to those who had repaid previous loans. They demanded exemption from CIBIL score criteria for agricultural loans and called for fresh loans to be issued within a week of repayment.
Highlighting rising input costs, farmers sought an increase in crop loan limits and criticised the Centre for failing to deliver on the promise of Minimum Support Price (MSP) at twice the input cost.
They also questioned why farm loans are not waived while public sector banks have written off loans in other sectors between FY16 and FY25.
Their other demands included interlinking of southern rivers, water supply from Mettur or Aliyar dam to the Ponnani River and Kannoothu dam, a monthly pension of ₹5,000 for farmers, round-the-clock three-phase electricity, and installation of CCTV cameras along the national highway to curb theft.
Carrying placards, the protesters urged the government to act immediately to safeguard farmers' lives and livelihoods.

If India has to surpass nations like China, it must end this war-like system and take steps towards reconciliation: Mehbooba Mufti in Kashmir

Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a strong leader and he can resolve Kashmir issue. Mufti, while addressing workers during People's Democratic Party 's 26th foundation day here in Srinagar said New Delhi needs to see Kashmir through the "prism of heart and not through the security centric approach." She said Modi is a strong leader like Indira Gandhi, who won Bangladesh and sent 90,000 Pakistani forces back, Vajpayee, who went to Lahore and despite Kargil war started dialogue and Manmohan Singh, who wanted to resolve Kashmir issue and did an agreement at Sharm al Sheikh. "PM Modi ji, with the mandate of 120 crore people, you have the power to rewrite the story of J&K. If India is to surpass nations like China, it must end this war-like system and take concrete steps toward reconciliation. Restore the trust of the people by engaging in a process that respects their dignity and rights," she said. The PDP chief said laws like UAPA and PSA and jailing people and use of military might won't resolve issues. 'The revocation of Article 370 has not brought peace or prosperity it has deepened alienation. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are not enemies; they are citizens seeking justice and inclusion. The Centre must stop treating this region as a security problem and start addressing it as a political issue requiring dialogue and statesmanship,' said Mufti. Live Events Mufti highlighted the socio-economic neglect in the region, saying, 'Our country grapples with poverty many schools lack basic facilities like toilets and clean drinking water, yet we prioritize buying weapons and deploying more CRPF companies. How much security is enough?" She stated militarization cannot heal wounds and until the Centre embraces the people of J&K with empathy and addresses their genuine aspirations, no progress will be made. The PDP chief also suggested that India has to play role of "elder brother" in the region and stop talking about war and start engagement with all the neighbours. "They say we shouldn't talk about foreign policy. K want to ask, what is India's foreign policy without Jammu and Kashmir at its heart? Decades of conflict have brought only suffering , wars end, only to be replaced by new ones. Pakistan has invested in war machinery, and India, once revered as the 'hathi' for its strength and wisdom, has shackled J&K with a heavy-handed approach.' She further referred to External Affairs Minister saying, 'Look at China's GDP and where India stands today. These are not my words but a reflection of our misplaced priorities.' Mufti reiterated the party's commitment to dialogue, stating whether in power or opposition, PDP has always championed engagement over suppression. "Our goal is a peaceful, prosperous J&K, integrated with India through mutual respect, not coercion,' she asserted. The PDP called on the Central government to initiate a credible process, restore democratic institutions in its true sense, and prioritize the aspirations of the people of J&K to build a future of peace and progress.

Why Are India's Pollution Control Boards Still Understaffed? Issue Raised In Parliament Again

Last Updated: According to the Centre, the appointment of employees in the State Boards and Pollution Control Committees are made by their respective boards and committees, and under their rules As recruitment bottlenecks continue to impair India's key pollution monitoring agencies, the issue of understaffing and huge vacancies in State Pollution Control Boards was once again raised in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The issue has persisted for several years with legislators from states including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu highlighting that over 50 per cent posts are vacant in the Pollution Control Boards across all states and union territories. Responding to questions on Monday, Minister of State for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh attributed the vacancies to multiple recruitment bottlenecks, including pending approval of service rules, delays in sanctioning staffing patterns, re-structuring or upgradation of posts, changes in recruitment policies and abolition of certain posts. 'Several Court cases/proceedings also have a bearing on recruitment and promotions," said Singh. Furthermore, he said that many new recruits are not joining the departments due to different reasons. 'No applications received for deputation posts, and no suitable candidates found in feeder grade. There are also no eligible candidates in the feeder cadre for promotional posts," he added. In March, the government had told Parliament, that as many as 5,351 posts are vacant across all state pollution control boards with as many as 339 in Uttar Pradesh alone. The issue was also brought to the attention of the Supreme Court earlier this year during a writ petition, when it directed all the State Pollution Control Boards and Committees to ensure that all the vacancies are filled by the end of September. Tasked with implementation of environmental laws across the country, the state pollution control Boards (SPCBs) have a very important role in enforcement of provisions of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. However, the manpower shortage has impeded action on the ground, say experts, as the agencies are required to monitor and take steps to abate the rising pollution levels. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
