MRCB subsidiary secures RM2.94b contract to develop Shah Alam Sports Complex
KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 — MRCB Land Sdn Bhd's wholly owned subsidiary, Lembaran Prospek Sdn Bhd, has signed a letter of acceptance from the Selangor state government, via Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI), to undertake the construction and completion of the Kompleks Sukan Shah Alam (KSSA), valued at RM2.94 billion.
MRCB Land is a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB).
The handover of the letter of acceptance was witnessed by the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, and Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
In a statement, MRCB said the construction project includes demolition works, which are currently nearing completion, and will span a 48-month period, with completion targeted for 2029.
'The KSSA development represents a bold transformation of Shah Alam into a vibrant, multi-functional urban precinct that reflects the shared vision of Selangor's leadership and MRCB's expertise in integrated urban developments,' it said.
MRCB chairman Datuk Mohamad Nasir Ab Latif said the group is committed to developing the KSSA project and is delighted to deliver this visionary project.
'We are humbled to be entrusted with delivering this visionary project for the state of Selangor. With our proven track record in urban regeneration and sustainable infrastructure, we are committed to building more than a stadium; we are creating a living, breathing destination for the people of Selangor,' he said.
MRCB, renowned for its award-winning Bukit Jalil Stadium Refurbishment Project, KL Sports City, is partnering local firm Hijjas Kasturi Architects and global stadium expert Populous, to deliver a world-class design that retains and reinterprets key elements of the original Shah Alam Stadium.
According to MRCB, the KSSA project is designed to be more than a sports complex — it will serve as a new economic, social, and environmental landmark in Selangor.
Centred around a 45,000-capacity stadium with a retractable pitch, the project will integrate community, commerce, and infrastructure across a 310,000 square metre green flora sanctuary.
'The new KSSA will promote active living, youth and community empowerment, and sustainability. The stadium, previously utilised less than 30 times a year for mainly football matches, will be redefined as a dynamic, year-round destination,' it noted.
With expanded facilities for indoor sports, e-sports, exhibitions, and lifestyle events, as well as dedicated zones for arts and culture, sports retail, food and beverage outlets, a sports museum, and public amenities, the KSSA is expected to revitalise Shah Alam as an inclusive hub for daily community engagement and economic growth. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has dismissed calls by Umno Youth for the government to audit Petronas's financial results, urging the wing instead to concentrate on more pressing issues affecting the national oil company and the country's long-term energy strategy. Zaid said unless there is a clear and specific concern that justifies an audit, such a move is unnecessary and risks diverting attention from more critical matters. 'What you should be worried about is this: were you told about the deal struck between the Madani government and Sarawak on the Petronas-Petros dispute? 'Was the settlement fair to Petronas, and was it made in the (nation's best) interest?' he said in a post on X. Zaid also questioned the government's continued reliance on Petronas for national revenue, warning that it may be draining the company to the point where it can no longer compete effectively in the global energy market. 'You (Umno Youth) should be asking whether the government has a serious plan to diversify its revenue sources beyond Petronas.' He also raised concerns about whether Petronas still attracts leaders with the strategic foresight and competence of past technocrats such as Idris Jala and Hassan Marican, or even former prime minister Najib Razak, who once served the company as a junior executive. Umno Youth yesterday called on the government to provide a full audit and transparent report on Petronas's actual financial position to the public after its decision to cut 10% of its workforce due to falling crude prices. Its chief, Dr Akmal Saleh, said that as a wholly government-owned entity, any drastic decision affecting thousands of employees should not be made without proper checks and balances. Petronas said at least 5,000 staff (mostly contract workers) would be affected by the move.

World No 4 duo Pearly-Thinaah, who had been having a great run at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta, lost 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 in a marathon match lasting 86 minutes. Despite the loss, Pearly-Thinaah can stand tall as they had shown remarkable fighting spirit in the championships, especially in the quarter-final and semi-final matches where they came from a game down to win the matches. Pearly-Thinaah have now met the Chinese pair 10 times in their career and have only won twice. The Malaysian pair had won four titles in their career so far and were hoping to make this their fifth and their first in the Super 1000 series, but this did not materialise. Pearly-Thinaah won the Thailand Open title last month. The Malaysian pair earned prize money of US$50,750 (RM214,570) as runners-up. The winners take home US$107,300 (RM453, 670). Malaysia has been experiencing a title drought in the women's doubles for 16 years, with Chin Ee Hui-Wong Pei Tty being the last winners in 2009.

Halal Industry Among Key Growth Drivers In IMT-GT, BIMP-EAGA
By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif and Nur Athirah Mohd Shaharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) – The rapidly-growing halal industry is among nine sectors that can trigger high economic growth in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The other key sectors include sustainable agriculture and agribusiness; tourism; green and renewable energy (RE); the digital economy; transport and logistics; palm oil and downstream industries; and Islamic finance, according to International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) associate professor of economics, Dr Muhammad Irwan Ariffin. The marine and fisheries industries are exclusive to the BIMP-EAGA sub-region, he noted. He said the halal industry in both IMT-GT and BIMP-EAGA sub-regions holds strong global demand for halal food, cosmetics, finance and tourism. "It shares Islamic values across Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, southern Thailand and Mindanao, making it a strategic goal to develop IMT-GT as a global halal hub," he told Bernama. Turning to the agricultural sector, Muhammad Irwan said the combination of vast arable land and a tropical climate drives strong demand for high-value crops, organic farming, agro-processing and agribusiness value chains, which are essential for supporting rural economies. As for the digital economy, he said increasing internet access in rural areas across the sub-regions has driven the growth of e-commerce, fintech and digital skills development, alongside plans for smart cities and cross-border digital corridors. "The sub-regions, which are known for their rich biodiversity, natural parks, and cultural heritage, are increasingly focusing on eco-tourism, halal tourism, and cross-border travel circuits, supported by strategic initiatives such as the Visit IMT-GT Year 2023–2025 campaign,' he continued. "In the Islamic finance sector, the large Muslim population and underserved rural communities present opportunities for inclusive growth through shariah-compliant financial services that support the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the regions."
