OpenAI's flagship GPT-4.1 model is now in ChatGPT
The latest versions of OpenAI's multimodal GPT AI models are now rolling out to ChatGPT. OpenAI announced on Wednesday that GPT-4.1 will be available across all paid ChatGPT account tiers and can now be accessed by Plus, Pro, or Team users under the model picker dropdown menu. Free users are excluded from the rollout, but OpenAI says that Enterprise and Edu users will get access 'in the coming weeks.'
GPT-4o mini, the more affordable and efficiency-focused model that OpenAI launched last year, is also being replaced with GPT-4.1 mini as the default option in ChatGPT for all users, including free accounts. Users on paid accounts will also see GPT-4o mini replaced by GPT-4.1 mini in the model picker options.
Both GPT-4.1 and GPT‑4.1 mini are optimized for coding tasks and instruction following, and outperform GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini 'across the board,' according to OpenAI. Both of the new models support a one million context token window — the amount of text, images, or videos in a prompt that an AI model can process — that greatly surpasses GPT-4o's 128,000-token limit. OpenAI says that speed improvements also make GPT-4.1 more appealing for everyday coding tasks compared to the powerful OpenAI o3 & o4-mini reasoning models it introduced in April.
GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini were made available to developers last month, alongside the GPT-4.1 nano model, which OpenAI described as its 'smallest, fastest, and cheapest' offering to date. GPT-4.1 Nano is absent from this model rollout announcement, and it's unclear when — or if — it'll be generally available in ChatGPT.

Musk's xAI facility brings ‘opportunity' to Memphis, mayor says
(NewsNation) — The mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, believes Elon Musk's xAI supercomputer facility will help 'a community that is desperately in need of investment,' though some residents say otherwise. The project will occupy an empty Electrolux factory located on the city's south side. It runs gas turbines, which release chemicals like formaldehyde and nitrogen oxides, in the process of powering his AI chatbot, Grok. Some Memphians have said the tech facility is polluting the air and water in a historically Black, working-class neighborhood and have joined the NAACP to call for its closure. 'We are urging you again to ensure that xAI stops operating its unpermitted turbines in violation of clean air and open meeting act laws and to order xAI to pay penalties for operating in violation of the law,' the NAACP told county officials in a letter. President Trump, Palantir's possible partnership: What to know But Memphis Mayor Paul Young sees it as an 'opportunity for us to benefit as a city.' The project is forecasted to generate $15 to $20 million in property taxes annually and is expected to create more than 300 jobs. 'It's in a community where 75 of the properties on the list for condemnation are located in that community — the second highest in our city,' Young told NewsNation. '[There's] one grocery store. So, there are some conditions in that community that require investment.' Those unpermitted turbines, according to Young, are a work in progress. 'Well, they have 365 days to get the temporary turbines permitted, and they filed for the permits in January,' Young said. 'They're expected to have those permits by September.' Utah lawyer sanctioned for court filing that used ChatGPT Musk also wants to build a second, even more powerful data center about 10 miles away. Young told NewsNation he welcomes the investment, even with the billionaire's controversial name attached. 'My goal is to separate the project from the person and really look at what the value proposition is for our community,' Young said, adding: 'I certainly believe that the visibility that he has contributes to a lot of the pushback that we're seeing.' In February, a man was arrested and charged with an act of terrorism for saying he was 'going to burn down' the facility. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Reddit Sues AI Startup Anthropic Over Alleged AI Training
Reddit's lawsuit marks the first time a big tech company has filed a complaint against an AI startup. Reddit filed a lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic on Wednesday, alleging that the $61.5 billion startup used its site as training grounds for AI models without permission. In the 42-page complaint, which was filed in Northern California court on Wednesday, Reddit claimed that Anthropic violated Reddit's user agreement by using the site's data for commercial purposes. Anthropic has allegedly been training its AI models on posts made by Reddit users without their consent. Related: 'Faster, Smarter, and More Relevant': Reddit Tests AI That Combs the Site For You According to TechCrunch, the lawsuit marks the first time a big tech company has legally challenged an AI startup over the material it uses to train AI models. "We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content for billions of dollars without any return for redditors or respect for their privacy," Reddit's chief legal officer Ben Lee told TechCrunch in a statement. Meanwhile, in an emailed statement to CNBC, an Anthropic spokesperson stated, "We disagree with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously." In July 2024, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman called out Anthropic, Microsoft, and Perplexity for unauthorizedly scraping the site for training data, and an Anthropic spokesperson assured Reddit that it had stopped. However, since then, Reddit claims to have registered that Anthropic's bots have crawled its site over 100,000 times, per the complaint. Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman. Photo by FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP via Getty Images Other companies are using Reddit data for AI training, but only after signing formal agreements with the company. Reddit struck a $60 million licensing deal with Google in February 2024, which allowed Google to train its Gemini AI on Reddit data. Reddit inked a similar contract with OpenAI in May 2024, so the ChatGPT-maker can refine its AI models from Reddit posts. In the lawsuit against Anthropic, Reddit wrote that OpenAI and Google "are permitted to use public Reddit content but only after agreeing to Reddit's licensing terms," which include provisions to protect user privacy. Anthropic has not agreed to any terms and is using the site's data without permission, Reddit claims. The company said the purpose of the lawsuit is to seek damages. It's asking for a jury trial. Reddit went public in March 2024 and is valued at over $21 billion at the time of writing.

5 key things from Gov. Hochul's interview with Axios
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said Wednesday that lawmakers who claim not to have read parts of the GOP spending bill should use ChatGPT to ask: "Anything I should worry about in here?" The big picture: Hochul spoke about the economic, political and social consequences of AI — from training workforces to children's safety — while speaking with Axios' Ina Fried at the AI+ Summit in New York. Here are five key things Hochul said in her interview with Axios' Ina Fried. 1. Hochul took a dig at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for saying she didn't know the GOP tax bill that passed the House last month included a provision that would ban states and municiplaities from regulating the tech for 10 years. Hochul referenced Greene, who sits on the House Oversight Committee, without naming her when mentioning she's set to testify on Capitol Hill next week with other Democratic governors about immigration policies. "They're claiming did not know that there was a 10 year ban on any ... AI" regulation, she said. "You voted for it. Just ask ChatGPT. ... just some humble advice for them." 2. She called out the GOP spending bill for that provision, calling it a "concerning" move by House Republicans. Hochul indicated it jeopardizes New York's ban on sexual exploitation of young girls on social media through the use of AI. 3. AI doesn't have to replace jobs, Hochul said. "AI can increase productivity dramatically," the governor said, adding that she's not looking to eliminate jobs. "I want ... people to have a better customer experience when they come into a DMV or other offices, so I see great potential here." 4."I'm New York state's first mom governor, and I look out for all the kids," she said regarding online safety. "So that's where I approach this from, is what we can do to protect our children, but not unnecessarily constrain what AI is all about and the potential?" 5. New York is challenging the White House including on saving offshore wind, congestion pricing and challenges to birthright citizenship.
